Challenging Children in Caring Classrooms

November 9, 2012 Dear DTEC Parents and Families, We hope everyone takes a moment to reflect on the importance of Veterans Day. As a school, we will take time out of our Monday morning to reflect on the significance and meaning of the day. Thank you to all David Turnham family members, immediate and extended, who have sacrificed for our country. Thank you. You are welcome to attend our recognition ceremony on Monday at 7:50. It will last approximately 20 minutes. Each day next week we will read the names that were sent in by our families! Thank you to Mrs. Williams and our Student Council for their organization of this event. Math Update The math standards include a problem solving component. True problem solving is not a traditional story problem such as I have 3 apples and a friend gave me 2 more. How many apples do I have now? Problem solving is a multiple step problem often times involving the use of more than 1 operation (add, subtract, multiply, divide). It requires the student to utilize a strategy in order to solve and explain his or her thinking. A simple example of this may be: I purchased 2 CDs for 14.95, 3 books for 4.95 and gave the cashier $40. What change did I receive? How could you estimate to determine whether or not the cashier was given enough money? Explain below. Solve. Want to help your K-2 grade student with real life math skills? Spend time talking about coins and their value, the time on the clock, and even how to read a tape measure. Let us know if you need any manipulatives to help with these activities. Miscellaneous Information Attendance is a vital part of your childs success here at school. When your child is absent he or she misses out on important discussion that cannot be recreated. While we do not want kids at school who are sick, we do want to work to improve our attendance. Community Announcement Santas Candy Castle will be hosting its 3rd Annual Jelly Belly Day this Saturday, November 10 from 9 5. This free event features a fun-filled day of Jelly Belly themed games, contests and activities for the entire family. Thanks for having great kids, Mrs. Kemp

We are running this information 1 more time! If you have already returned this to school, thank you!
