Shod (literally the writing path)

D means path, way - the Chinese reading is Tao. Sho is not merely beautiful script, nor is it just a means of conveying data. Calligraphy is one of the spiritual, martial and aesthetic disciplines or ways [E.g the way of tea Chad , the way of the sword Kendo, etc.] Among those engaged in the practice of calligraphy [ascesis, from Greek askesis, literally exercise or training] we count monks and nuns, warriors and intelligence officers, craftsmen and artists, scholars and poets, diplomats, politicians and businesspeople. [E.g. The great Woven Cap scrolls calligrapher Asakura Juken, 17th century, warrior./Otagaki Rengetsu, 19th century, nun, poet, painter, potter, calligrapher, skilled in martial arts and tea ceremony / the three Shu who ensured a relatively peaceful and orderly transition of power in the Meiji Restoration , 19th century, skilled in martial arts, calligraphy, Zen / Saigo Takamori, 19th century, the Last Samurai/Hisamatsu Shinichi, 20th century, philosopher, skilled in Zen and calligraphy, tea ceremony master / etc.] The act of writing becomes purposeless, independent of any will-power. Body, mind, brush, ink and paper unite and become indistinguishable from the act itself. Shod has an effect on ones spiritual growth. Nishida Kitar (18701945): True creation arises from mu-shin, or the state of no-mind, which lies beyond thoughts, emotions and expectations - the mind will free itself from the attachments to hope and fears and calculation. . Shakyo, sutra transcription or copying the Lotus Sutra is often taken up by calligraphers - is a means of improving calligraphic skill, a meditative practice, or a way to gain Blessings.

Those who commissioned or collected the works were already familiar with the stories handed down, told and retold for a long time. Essentially, the aim of the viewer was to evaluate the skill of the painter, to ascertain the proficiency of the calligrapher and to compare the work to similar versions one may use a musical analogy, variations on a theme, or one may imagine the same scenario with a different range of visual effects. Sho can be viewed either as just a text to be read or as a painterly composition, In the latter case, readability becomes irrelevant. [Luhmann s communication theory: one can focus on either the information or how the information is expressed.. E.g. The Tales of Ise screen the writing, although still readable, becomes part of the design, it modulates the large gilded areas.] Like Zen, Sho can be analyzed, it can be described, it can be sensed but it is a vague image with no substance until it is experienced: 'The path of words has been cut out.

Kb Daishi/Kkai is credited with the invention of the syllabic writing system. According to tradition, he also composed the Iroha, a poem which is a perfect pangram, containing each character of the syllabary exactly once. Iroha is a poem about the impermanence of all things. The first syllables, i and ro, iro, mean color, form. The context of the poem brings to mind The Heart Sutra: form is emptiness, emptiness is form.
