2. HISTORY

Film poster for first Indian sound film, Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara (1931) Guru Dutt (1925-1964) Raja Harishchandra (1913), by Dadasaheb Phalke, was the first silent feature film made in India. After that in 1930 the industry was producing over 200 films per annume. The first Indian sound film, Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara (1931), was a major commercial success. There was clearly a huge market for talkies and musicals; Bollywood and all the regional film industries quickly switched to sound filming. In 1937, Ardeshir Irani, of Alam Ara fame, made the first colour film in Hindi, Kisan Kanya The next year, he made another colour film, a version of Mother India. However, colour did not become a popular feature until the late 1950s. At this time, lavish romantic musicals and melodramas were the staple fare at the cinema The period from the late 1940s to the 1960s is regarded by film historians as the "Golden Age" of Hindi cinema .In the late 1960s and early 1970s, romance movies and action films starred. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the pendulum swung back toward family-centric romantic musicals with the success.

The 2000s saw a growth in Bollywood's popularity in the world This led the nation's filmmaking to new heights in terms of quality, cinematography and innovative story lines as well as technical advances in areas such as special effects, animation. The Hindi film industry has preferred films that appeal to all segments of the audience. and has resisted making films that target narrow audiences. It was believed that aiming for a broad spectrum would maximise box office receipts. However, filmmakers may be moving towards accepting some box-office segmentation, between films that appeal to rural Indians, and films that appeal to urban and overseas audiences. After mid-era directors turn towards sequels and remakes.

3.SEQUEL 3.1 Sequel

In simple word sequel means sequence or Series. In other word sequel is narrative documental or other work of literature, film, theatre, or music that continues the story or expands upon issues presented in some previous work. A sequel portrays events set in the same fictional universe as a previous work, usually chronologically following the events of that work. In many cases, the sequel continues elements of the original story, often with the same characters and settings. The most common approach is for the events of the second work to directly follow the events of the first, either picking up dangling plot threads or introducing a new conflict to drive the events of a second story. In movies, sequels are common. There are many name formats for sequels. Usually, they either have unrelated titles, such as The Jewel of the Nile, the sequel to Romancing the Stone, or the same title as the original, but with a number added, as in Lethal Weapon 2, sequel to Lethal Weapon Sometimes such titles have subtitles as well (e.g. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York). It is also common for a sequel to have a variation of the original title (such as Men of Boys Town, sequel to Boys Town)

Not all remakes use the same title as the previously released version; the 1966 film Walk, Don't Run, for example, is a remake of the World War II comedy The More the Merrier. This is particularly true for films that are remade from films produced in another language, such as: Point of No Return (from the French Nikita), Vanilla Sky .The Magnificent Seven (from the Japanese Seven Samurai), A Fistful of Dollars (from the Japanese Yojimbo), and The Departed (from Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs)
