Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay), Maharashtra, India.
The term is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; it is only a part of the total Indian film industry, which includes other production centers producing films in regional languages. The name "Bollywood" is derived from Bombay (the former name for Mumbai).and Hollywood is the center of the America film industry.Bollywood is the largest film producer in India and one of the largest centers of film production in the world The term "Bollywood" has origins in the 1970s. The naming scheme for "Bollywood" was inspired by "Tollywood", the name that was used to refer to the cinema of West Bengal. 2. HISTORY
Film poster for first Indian sound film, Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara (1931) Guru Dutt (1925-1964) Raja Harishchandra (1913), by Dadasaheb Phalke, was the first silent feature film made in India. After that in 1930 the industry was producing over 200 films per annume. The first Indian sound film, Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara (1931), was a major commercial success. There was clearly a huge market for talkies and musicals; Bollywood and all the regional film industries quickly switched to sound filming. In 1937, Ardeshir Irani, of Alam Ara fame, made the first colour film in Hindi, Kisan Kanya The next year, he made another colour film, a version of Mother India. However, colour did not become a popular feature until the late 1950s. At this time, lavish romantic musicals and melodramas were the staple fare at the cinema The period from the late 1940s to the 1960s is regarded by film historians as the "Golden Age" of Hindi cinema .In the late 1960s and early 1970s, romance movies and action films starred. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the pendulum swung back toward family-centric romantic musicals with the success.
The 2000s saw a growth in Bollywood's popularity in the world This led the nation's filmmaking to new heights in terms of quality, cinematography and innovative story lines as well as technical advances in areas such as special effects, animation. The Hindi film industry has preferred films that appeal to all segments of the audience. and has resisted making films that target narrow audiences. It was believed that aiming for a broad spectrum would maximise box office receipts. However, filmmakers may be moving towards accepting some box-office segmentation, between films that appeal to rural Indians, and films that appeal to urban and overseas audiences. After mid-era directors turn towards sequels and remakes.
3.3 Types of Sequel:1.Character Driven:- In this type of movies lead character remains same .E.g Golmal1
Golmal Returns ,Munna bhai MBBS,Lage raho Munna Bhai
2.Theme Driven:- In this type of movies basic concepts of story remains same.E.g Hera
Pheri.Phir Hera Pheri,Koi mil gaya Krishh
3.4 Advantage of Sequel: Less risk involved in returning to a story with known popularity Audiences are eager for more stories about popular characters or settings Sequel is type which is already known to people because of success of prequel No extra effort needed towards promotion
4.REMAKE
4.1 Remake
A movie that has been filmed or recorded again and re-released are called as remake. It is used in reference to a movie which uses an earlier movie as the main source material. For example, 2001's Ocean's Eleven is a remake of the 1960 film, while 1989's Batman is a reinterpretation of the comic book source material which also inspired 1966's Batman. Not all remakes use the same title as the previously released version; the 1966 film Walk, Don't Run, for example, is a remake of the World War II comedy The More the Merrier. This is particularly true for films that are remade from films produced in another language, such as: Point of No Return (from the French Nikita), Vanilla Sky .The Magnificent Seven (from the Japanese Seven Samurai), A Fistful of Dollars (from the Japanese Yojimbo), and The Departed (from Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs)
