nd Us nd Grade Level or Target Group: 2 Grade Materials: o iPads (one for each student or enough to share in groups of 2) o Apps downloaded: My First Tangrams HD, Toy Tangrams, 2nd Grade Splash Math, Geometry 4 Kids, Learn Shapes, Animoto Pre Planning Big Idea(s): To help students understand and identify different 2D geometric shapes. Essential Questions: Can you identify a circle, square, rectangle, and triangle and be able to describe characteristics of each? Objective: VA SOL 2.16 The student will identify, describe, compare, and contrast plane figures VA SOL 1.12 The student will identify and trace, describe, and sort plane geometric figures (triangle, square, rectangle, and circle) according to number of sides, vertices, and right angles. Summative Assessment: Students will complete Animoto video activity (detailed in the Closing section. Lesson Opening Lesson Opening (The Hook): Students will be introduced to the unit/lesson on geometric shapes. Examples can be shown and drawn on a SMARTBoard. A teacher may identify examples in class. To get students thinking about these shapes, they may play one, two, or all three of the following apps. These are tangram puzzle apps that help students see what shapes look like and how they may fit together. There are additional shapes in the Toy Tangrams app that were learned in previous grades (heart, star) and one that will not be covered in second grade (pentagon). My First Tangrams HD Toy Tangrams

Lesson Body Explanation: Students will use the Geometry 4 Kids app to explore the characteristics of each shape. This app has quick check questions to review with students as they go along. Students will explore the 2D shapes, polygons, and triangles sections.

Check for Understanding: Students may work individually or in groups and complete the 10 question assessment in the 2nd Grade Splash Math app. When students open the app, they will have to navigate to the geometry section. Upon completion, students should show their instructor the screen that has the grade on it. Students may wish to retake the assessment at the discretion of the teacher.

Extended Practice: For students needing additional practice, they may want to explore the Learn Shapes app. This app is geared for kindergarten and first grade students but this remediation may be necessary and helpful to get students onto the current grade level knowledge

Learn Shapes

Closing Lesson Closing: Students with use their knowledge of shapes to create a video using Animoto. There are four main shapes (circle, square, rectangle, and triangle). Students will be placed in one of four groups and will go around the classroom and school taking pictures of real examples of their assigned shape. When they have put enough pictures into their video (10 or more), they can edit the theme. When this is completed, the teacher can assist with publishing the video.

*Alternative: If students are more advanced in using the app the groups could create videos that have all 4 shapes in them (40+ pictures) that would need to be separated by text slides. This would be at the discretion of the teacher.
