Another act has been added to the Laneway Festival line-up for 2013. A Place to Bury Strangers will be joining the already exciting line-up. A Place To Bury Strangers have often been called the loudest band in New York. This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called loud rock and roll thats out there, APTBS is not loud simply for the sake of it. Laneway are announcing the last of their line-up every Monday over the next three weeks. Each Monday at 9am NZ Time, a new act will be announced - then two acts on Mon 03 Dec.

After suffering from serious stomach complications last year (gas, anyone?), Baths has made good and are back for two shows this month. Kids no more, the once heavy synth group has found the perfect balance and showcases an all new sound, with even catchier hooks. The boys have gone for more of a bubblegum-love sound, with their singles LaLa and Tucan already invading the airwaves. With support from Loui the Zu.

Now they are VNZMA winners, Six60 can add yet another awesome accolade to their already massive collection, including triple platinum sales of their debut album. The versatile band is playing with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in a one-off show marking one year since their explosive first CD.

GRIZZLY BEAR
oPERA HouSE
7.30PM, $78, TICKETEK.CO.NZ
No-one wants to get close to a Grizzly, let alone listen to one play the guitar. Gotcha: its actually a New York quartet, who is bringing their harmonysoaked chamber-pop to New Zealand for the first time in their career. The band featured on the soundtrack for the worlds most depressing Ryan Gosling movie Blue Valentine.
If you cant make Wellington Zinefest come celebrate the launch of issue 11 of PRESENCE magazine by seeing Randa perform at Golden Dawn and get a free mag. The zine features Porcelaintoy, Dear Times Waste, Rackets, comedic duo Stop Being a Pud, artist Liam Gerrard, fashion designer Georgia Alice and comic artist Ellen Moorhead.
Are solo projects from musicians in established musical acts doomed to be mirror images of their day jobs, or is it an opportunity to do something completely out of the blue that never have worked in their other bands? Banks, from Interpol front man Paul Banks, answers that question with another question: cant it be both? Banks (the album) is a statement in which Banks (the man) embraces his own musical identity as a detached entity from Interpol and it yields some interesting results. The clue is in the albums title and the fact that he is no longer using the Julian Plenti pseudonym, having previously released an album and an EP under that name over the past few years. This change has allowed him to finally take center stage with no fake name to protect him from the slings and arrows of notoriety. For now at least Banks is running his ambitions up the flagpole to see who salutes. There are certainly some Interpolflavoured songs here (such as Over My Shoulder and Paid For That) but the more familiar concepts are presented in a new light, which only Banks by himself could muster. Guitar driven tunes carry a new cinematic edge that elevates them above the New York industrial chic of Turn On The Bright Lights. Banks is perhaps giving us a glimpse into his own CD collection with every song that passes. U2, Joy Division, and Kraftwerk, make for strange bedfellows but manage to co-exist on lead single The Base. Electric, electronic, and organic instruments mesh together to make
a dizzying tapestry of soul-baring tales. The instrumental Lisbon is a breath of fresh air amidst the gloom a meandering piece that evokes the technicolour landscapes of classic cinema and gives the audience a small break from Banks claustrophobic drone. Ultimately, Banks is an excursion into one mans mind, heart, and soul. The strongest moments come when he is less fussed about densely layered arrangements and let us slip right to the core of the songs. Summertime Is Gone closes the album in a gorgeous, heart-warming fashion. While it might be an uneven album there is plenty in there for Interpol fans to love and for everyone else to wonder at and, perhaps, even love too.

BARRYMORE
GEnERAL RELEASE
83MINS
Its not the life of troubled TV star Michael Barrymore, or about the former wild child Drew Barrymore, its about Shakespearean actor John Barrymore, played by Oscar award-winner Christopher Plummer. Set in 1942, the film takes place on the stage of a Broadway theatre where the actor is struggling to recreate his performance in the title role of Richard III.
DIRECTED BY BEN LEWIN STARRING JOHN HAWKES, HELEN HUNT AND WILLIAM H. MACY
What could have been saccharine awards-baiting B.S. becomes humane, life-affirming drama about far more than say, a rich regent with a stutter. John Hawkes has never been more watchable or witty as he is here, portraying Mark OBrien the Californian writer, paralysed by polio. A 38-year-old virgin, OBrien hires Cheryl, a sex surrogate, played by Helen Hunt. To say the two leads are brave may risk sounding condescending, but they are. Many actors might think twice about the films frank portrayal of sex and disability, but Hunt and Hawkes deliver wry, witty and wise performances. As do the entire cast, especially William H Macy as OBriens surprisingly openminded Catholic priest. Writer/director Ben Lewin is a polio survivor himself, which may go some way to explaining how he pulls off
When hes not being tickled by thousands/millions of children (gross), Elmo is just a puppet at the hands of Kevin Clash a man who went from a modest life in Baltimore to becoming the hands behind one of the worlds most recognisable characters, yet you wouldnt know his face. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg.
the delicate balance between maudlin sentimentality and moving drama. The film benefits from a first-rate and often very funny script and a committed cast delivering pitch perfect performances that, like Marco Beltramis score and Geoffrey Simpsons cinematography, shirk attention- seeking theatrics for subtle honesty. The Sessions is moving, funny, thought-provoking adult drama that manages to impress without ever beating you over the head telling you what to think. As OBrien says at one point, I can be a bit time consuming, but Im worth the trouble. And this tale of his life sure is, especially for those that like less bang and more human behaviour for their buck.

When they arent serving up beers youve probably never heard of (and some you would have, of course), they are playing music to blow your mind. Puppies is the new kid on the block, hoping to make a drastic change to the way bands are showcased in the music scene. Its an intimate setting which home two shows a night: one to get the night started and another to send you off into the wee hours. They have ridiculously cheap drinks specials so cheap, I dont want to even mention them to here in fear of jinxing it! Not to mention the hipsterfriendly bar staff know the ins and outs of their zone, so dont be afraid to strike up a conversation between songs.

It dIdnt seem possible that Brooklyn art-rockers Grizzly Bear could top their brilliant Veckatimest, but one listen to their fourth studio effort, Shields, has definitely put paid to any claim theyd done their dash. the box of tricks is used more judiciously this time, producing a direct and open feeling; stripping away the dreamy aura of some of their past efforts. With a blend of baroque sway, starbursts of guitar, and curtains of synth and psychedelic folk, the Grizzlys are sonic juggernauts and once again this acclaimed outfit is headed our way this month for two nights (Wellington and Auckland on nov 20 and 21). they started as a solo project for ed droste, but soon morphed into a full band of collaborators with their first album, recorded for famed english electro label Warp Records. It was no surprise that droste should grow up a musician his grandfather was the head of Harvards music department for over 40 years, his aunt is a concert cellist, and his mother a music teacher. Co-writer daniel Rossen was nurtured on jazz guitar, whilst the rest of the band also had a heavy influence of neil Young and stephen stills in their infant ears. Although droste had begun recording under the moniker in early 2002, it was a bad break-up that found him reaching for the guitar as therapy. so it became this little home project, he told me on their previous Kiwi stopover. I thought this is fun, Im just going to call this stuff Grizzly Bear. I didnt even know about Animal Collective. I initially called my band Brooklyn Vegan and Grizzly Bear was the resulting project. Finally, Christopher Bear joined Grizzly Bear by helping with Horn of Plenty recordings, but by release time the group had grown to include Bears friend Chris taylor (initially their arranger and Rossen as a second singer-guitarist for the live shows). After a solid six month tour, Yellow House was in production, recorded in drostes childhood home in massachusetts. It was here that taylors space-centric production contributed to the great expanses heard in their later sound. He [taylor] sticks a microphone at the top of the stairwell and had the amp in the other place and recorded a really distant, hot signal, with heaps of white noise to go with it, droste had noted when asked about the song Coke machine Glow. Although Yellow House was well-received, the bands arrival on the popcultural consciousness was more of a slow trickle, coming not with an album or single, but between LPs. tours with tV on the Radio (2006), Feist (2007) and Radiohead (2008) exposed them to a broad range of listeners. It was really amazing and surreal, droste gushed to Pitchfork.com about their Radiohead shows. I can barely believe it happened. I dont have any contact with any of them. All I have is a few digital pictures and people being like, Yup, that happened. It was kind of a dream come true for us, to play in front of that many people. subsequent appearances with Paul simon and on Letterman, Conan, and Craig Ferguson didnt hurt. then there was their third effort: Veckatimest. Like its predecessor, Veckatimest was a huge evolutionary step and a glorious, orchestral pop explosion of grand melody juxtaposed by tiny details. It was hailed by everyone in the intranet and printed world as the album of the year. With the cross-cultural crossover complete Veckatimest which probably peaked when Jay-Z and Beyonc came to an outdoor summer concert in new York in 2009 Grizzly Bear toured endlessly before finally landing in a disused airfield for an undisclosed period of time. taylor debuted side-project Cant (Dreams Come True) and produced the morning Benders and twin shadow (amongst many others), and Rossen released a solo LP, Silent Hour/Golden Mile. earlier this year, they were finally back with shields, initially announced without a title. this record is a darker; proggy opus that stands clear of the former harmonic, woodland pop, but still is drowning in layers so thick on Jackson Pollock could interpret a way out. On stage the drama and sonic experience promises to overwhelm and delight. Grizzly Bear will be a band not to miss!

have you played LittleBigPlanet before? It doesnt matter, because this is a karting game. Weve all played the like: you get a cute kart and race around a track covered in power-ups and traps. This new game, however, has got Sackboy in it...

His bobbling little head and propensity for crazy outfits suddenly make this game seems a lot more fun. And, of course, you can modify your karts in a similar fashion to Sackboy. Just like in LBP, in each level there are large bubbles with prizes in them. These are decorative elements such as new fabric or stickers. And just like in LBP you can use them to decorate your cardboard pod house, Sackboy himself, or Sackboys kart. The karts are made from cardboard, balloons, dinosaurs and tin, and all of the crafty things youd expect from the LBP world. Each element of the kart can be changed: steering wheel, seat, and the wheels. Theres something cool about driving a hovering dinosaur with sushi maki rolls as hover jets. As well as the competitive multiplayer racing youd expect, there is also a story mode, once again narrated by Stephen Fry. I could listen to his dulcet tones all day, though after a while I found the cutesy language a bit much. Sometimes you forget that LBP really is aimed at kids. The storys main plot is that the bad guys are stealing all of the pieces of Imagiverse and noone is fast enough to stop them. No-one, but you (as described in a ridiculously cute intro movie). So you travel to each of the Imagiverses worlds, stopping the horrible evil racers by beating them in races. As always, LBP is better with friends and you can be accompanied through the story mode with a another player. I prefer local multiplayer as a general rule and thankfully LBP offers split screen racing as it should be. Cooperative racing is fun but after a level is completed the versus version of the same track is unlocked so you go head to head with your friends. When the dust had settled, the stupid grin on my face, the uncontrollable laughs and the humming of the music long after the race was over; all proved that his game is fun right through to its adorable little core. Recommended.
