traditionneedslotofpreparatoryworkincollectionofmaterials(Samgree)which
needslotofeffort,especiallyinthepresentsituationinwhichthecommunityhas
beendislodgedfromKashmir.Nonavailabilityofpriests,orevenifavailable,their
highdemandsandlackofknowledgemakesthemournersmoredesperate.Thus,
despiteloveandaffectionforthedepartedsouloneiscompelletoignore
traditionalfarewellofdepartedsoulandsomehowcrematethebodywith
whateverlocalservicesoftheplacewherehe/sheisliving.BackhomeinKashmir
wehadasystemofcreatingMrtyuSamgreeBhandarsinvariouslocalitieswhere
fromonecouldcollectallthematerialswithoutevenmakingthepaymentsatthe
timeoftragedy.Evenourkulgurufamilypriest,wouldnotacceptpaymentson
suchoccasions.Hewouldkeepafastalongwithotherfamilymembertillthe
corpseiscremated.Thepresentdaypriestsareusingtheirmeagerknowledgeto
extractmaximumpossiblebenifitfromthedesperationofthebereavedfamily.
Aresponsibilityfallsontheshouldersofseniormembersofcommunitytomakea
concertedefforttopreserveourtraditions.TheycanstartMrtyuSamgriBhandars
andlearntherecitationsasgivenbelow.TherecitationshavebeengiveninSanskrit
aswellasinRomanscriptalongwithtranslationsanddirections.Acarefulstudywill
revealthatthereisnotmuchofSanskritrecitationintheseritual.Thesame
recitationsareusedagainandagainforvariousacts.Effortsareonfoottomake
theserecitationsinaudioformandwillbeputonthissitewhenready.
Vedicthoughtsaboutdeath
AsperVedicthoughthumanbeingisacombinationofgrossandsubtleelements
calledPanchmahabhutasnamely1)Aakashaether,2)Vayuair,3)Aapawater,
4)Agniheatand5)Prithviearth).Theymakethehumanbodygrowandperform
variousfunctions.Thefunctioningofbodyisprojectedasasortof
sheaths(kosha),liketheonethatcoversasword.Thus,ahumanbodyisa
combinationoffivekoshasknownasPanchkoshas:
1)AnnamayakoshaPhysicalbodynourishedbyfood
2)Pranmayakosha(Vitalairsheathwhichcontrolsfunctionsofbreathing)
3)Manomayakosha(Mindsheathresponsibleforfunctionsofmind)
4)Vijnaanmayakosha(Intellectualsheathresponsibleformakingdecisions)
5)Anandmayakosha(seatofthoughtsbeforetheymanifestinaction)
Thesesheathsaretobeunderstoodasoneresidingwithintheother,fromouterto
inner,intheordergivenabove.
ThephysicalgrossbodyisknownasStulsharira,whichcomesintoexistenceatthe
timeofbirth.Itisthisbodyalonewhichisdestroyedbydeathduetoits

malfunctioning.Theotherfourkoshaswhicharesubtle,knownas
Sukshamsharira(Subtlebody)arenotaffectedbydeath.Theysimplytransmigrate
intoanotherbodyandkeepondoingsotillthateternalsoulobtainsmoksha
freedomfromsamsara(actsofbirthanddeath)
ThedisposalofadeadbodyisalsoaSamskara.ItiscalledApara(later)Karma.
HoweveritismorecommonlyknownbythenameAntyeshti(Finalygnya)inwhich
thedeadbodyisofferedasanoblationtoAgnidevainthefirepithoma,wherethe
bodydisintegratesandreleasesthesefiveelementstojoinbacktotheirrespective
sources.ThedeadpersonimmediatelyafterdeathiscalledaPreta.Ithovers
aroundtheplaceofitsresidenceforonehumanyear.
AttheendofonehumanyearitfindsanewbodyandisthencalledaPitr.Thusall
theritualsconnectedwithPretaarecalledAntyeshtiritualsandthoserituals
associatedwithPitrarecalledShraddha.AlltheritesperformedunderAntyeshti
havebeendesignatedwiththeaimoftransferringaPretaintoaPitr.Withthe
passageoftimecarryingouttheseAntyeshtiritualsoveraperiodofoneyearmay
havebecomedifficult,hencethewholesamskaraofoneyearhasbeencompressed
intoagaunasecondaryformof13daysaffairfromthedateofdeath.Many
Hindushavereducedthetimeofmournigtojust4days.Theperformanceof
monthlyMasvar(monthlyshraddha)Shadmos(sixmonthlyshraddha)duringpreta
stageofancestorisalocaltraditiontokeepuptheremembranceofdepartedsoul
irrespectiveofkarmicdemands.AsperVedicthought,aftereleventh/12thday
shraddhanoshraddhacanbeperformedbeforefirstdeathanniversary.
ThedisposalofdeadbodyisdonebyofferingittoYamdeva,wholivesinSouthern
Quarters.Hencealloblationsthroughayagnya,alongwithotherofferingssuchas
blacktil(sessamum),barleyflouretcaremadefacingSouth,yagnopavitin
upsavena(leftshoulder)position.

Apersonisclinicallydeadafter6hoursofdeath.Followingactsaretobe
performed:
1) AnnaDanaSufficientquantityofrice(about10kgormore)isplacedby
thesideofdieing/deadpersonandifpossiblehe/sheismadetotouchitasa
snklpa.Somefamilymembercanalsoperformitincriticalconditions.However
ifthedeathtakesplaceoutsidehomee.g.inhospitalorroadaccidentthenit
shouldbeperformedbyclosebloodrelationassoonaspossible.Itshouldbe
giventopoororplacedinanearbytemple.
2)RecitemantraintheearTheeldestsonorinhisabsenceanyoneshould
slowlyrecitesomeVedicmantrasuchasOmOmorGurumantra(ifknown)in
therightearofthedyingperson.
3) PutGangaJalinmouthTheeldestsonoranyoneelseinhisabsence
shouldholdthedyingpersonsheadinhislapandputateaspoonfulofGanga
water(orinitsabsencewaterconsecratedbySaligramPuja)tothedying
person.Allnearrelativeswhoarepresentmayalsodosoquickly.
4) Cleanthefloorattheplacewherethecorpseistobekept,bysmearingit
withclayorwithwaterifitisalreadycemented.Placegrass,darbha(flower
petalsifdharbaisnotavaiable)andblacksesamum(til)overit.Liftcorps
carefullyandputitoverthisgrass/flowerbedwithheadinthesouthern
direction.Placealightedearthenoillampneartheheadofdeadpersonwith
thenotchoflampfacingnorth.
5) Stretchoutallthehandsandfeetofthecorpse.Thisshouldbedonesoon
afterdeathasbodypartsgetstiffenedwiththepassageoftime.
6) RecitationofBhagvadGita(Chapter2)shouldbecarriedoutbythe
mournerstillbodyispreparedtobeshiftedfromtheplace.Cryingsoonafter
deathdisturbsthedeadpersonwhoisstilltechnicallyaliveandattachedto
familymembers.
bb)GivingabathtotheCorpse
Insituationswhencremationofbodyhastobepostponed,thisshouldbe
doneonthedaycremationtakesplace.Howeverifbodyistobestoredata
morgueorinfuneralhousesasisthepracticeinUSAandEurope,thenthethe
bathalongwithotherritualsshouldbeperformedbeforeshiftingthebody
there.Inspecialsituationswherebodycannotbebroughthomesoonafter
death,bathmayhavetobepostphonedforsometimebutinnocaseitshould
becrematedwithoutabath.Thatwillbeagreatcurseforthefamily.Abath

clothesfromthebody.Shirt/frockisremovedbytearingitinfrom
thefrontsideasatokenofgrief.Coverprivatepartofbodybyanew
brieforshranpat.Bathisgivenwithlukewarmwatermixedwith
milk,curd,ghee,srshup(yellowmustardoilseeds)blacktil.Addwater
fromthreekalashasi.e.Gayatrikalash,BhairovandAstrkalashif
yamahoma(Seebelow)isdoneattheplaceofstart.Afterthisclean
bodyonceagainwithcleanwatertoremoveallstickingmaterial
