MISSOURI STATE HOMECOMING 2012

MEET YOUR KING AND QUEEN
Special congratulations to Garrett Mueller and Lexi Beck on being crowned Missouri State Universitys Homecoming King and Queen! Want to get to know them a little bit better? Heres an interview we had with Lexi and Garrett to get their story. FSL: What made you decide to run for Homecoming King / Queen? GM: I ran for Homecoming King because I received great encouragement from my fraternity brothers. With my involvement in different campus organizations, strong support from Theta Chi and Cru (a campus ministry I am involved in), I knew I would have a great chance at winning, so I wanted to run and represent my chapter. LB: I accepted the nomination to run for Homecoming Queen because I felt that I had the support that I needed from my sisters and because I felt that I would have an amazing experience if I won or lost. I was honored that Delta Zeta chose me to represent them and also excited to represent other groups that I belong to, such as the SOAR Leaders. I wanted a chance to show everyone what I am all about, including my passion for this school and for Homecoming. FSL: How did you feel when you heard that you had won? GM: When I heard I won I was pretty confused and didnt know how to respond. I dont know if you were at the game or have heard, but they announced the wrong name. They announce Pi Kaps candidate, Jared Horman, instead of me, so naturally, I was sad I didnt win, especially after all of my campaigns hard work. However, when I was informed they made a mistake, I didnt know how to react. Then, some of the Homecoming committee chairs met with Jared and me and informed me they in fact did make a mistake. So, when I heard I won, I felt pretty confused, flustered, and awkward, since I was handed the crown from Jared near the concession stands instead of receiving it on the field from the Student Body and MSU President in front of my parents, brothers, and friends. LB: I was completely surprised and incredibly happy. Anyone who talked to me the night before will tell you that I did not think I was going to win. The four women who were on court with me were truly amazing and it was very intimidating to compete with them. That was definitely one of the most exciting moments of my life, and it meant the world to have so much of the FSL community there supporting me. (continued on page 2)

On the night of Monday, November 5 all Fraternity and Sorority Life men and women gathered to participate in Greek Week Team and Theme Reveal. This year it was a wild race where two representatives from each chapter were tasked to run around campus to answer trivia questions and figure out clues to find out their teams for Greek Week 2013. All the chapters met the Plaster Student Union Theater to get their first clue. From there, the teams headed off to Strong, Siceluff, or Craig Hall to answer University, math and or other random trivia. At the end of the race the chapters were given their teams and were told the overall Greek Week Theme. The six teams for this year are: -Alpha Chi Omega, Kappa Sigma & Sigma Chi -Alpha Delta Pi, Kappa Alpha Psi & Pi Kappa Alpha -Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Gamma Sigma, Sigma Nu, Tau Kappa Epsilon & Zeta Phi Beta -Delta Zeta, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha, Phi Gamma Delta & Pi Kappa Phi -Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Gamma Rho, Delta Chi, Phi Beta Sigma & Theta Chi -Sigma Kappa, Phi Delta Theta, & Sigma Pi -Xi Omicron Iota, Alpha Kappa Lambda, Alpha Phi Alpha & Sigma Phi Epsilon The overall Greek Week Theme will be Greek Yearbook. GREEK WEEK 2013 TEAM AND THEME REVEAL

FSL: What are you most excited about doing with your King / Queen title?

KING & QUEEN INTERVIEW CONTINUED

GM: I am extremely excited to expand upon this position. I am looking to serve my community service hours on a trip planned by MSU to Haiti. I dont know if that has ever been done before, but I think it would be an awesome trip that other students would join me in serving. Additionally, I want to be a spokesman for students. I am involved in Student Government Association, and I want to be able to contribute and be a voice for the students wants for MSU. Because many of them voted for and supported me, hopefully I can work well with students to gauge what they want, help communicate to them new ideas to vote on and implement to the university, and overall improve MSU. LB: It is my hope that I can use this title to serve as a role model to other students. I think that the university and our FSL community do an amazing job of proving opportunities to improve members. I hope to use my exposure to encourage people to take advantage of all of the programs that are offered. In addition, I am excited to further my own philanthropic and service efforts during this year. FSL: Is there anything else you would like to add about the experience? GM: I feel like my experience literally a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For one, I feel I was very fortunate how things played out. A very popular song, Gangnam Style, came out at the perfect time. I was able to use my study away experience, my passion for international students, and my skills to adapt the song to my campaign, and I had an absolute blast. Additionally, I have the greatest friends, brothers, and supporters. I honestly could not have won without their help. I had brothers make hilarious memes, hand out 5,000 handbills, chalk, put up posters, etc. I cannot express how thankful I am for everyones support. Then, after all the work, I didnt even win. Its really funny looking back, and it will definitely be a good story to tell for years to come. MSU is going re-crown Lexi and me at the home opener mens basketball game this Friday at 7 p.m., so hopefully that will be as similar to be crowned at the Homecoming game as possible. LB: The most amazing thing about running for Homecoming Queen was realizing how supportive the FSL community can be. I was really worried that there would be tension with other chapters, but I have had nothing but wonderful experiences throughout the entire process. My chapter was incredibly supportive about me running, but I was touched to see other members of the community reach out to me as well. I just want to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity, because I know I couldnt have done it alone!
