Unit Title: Expressions and Equations Subject: Mathematics (Algebra)

Essential Question(s): How does one solve for expressions in an algebraic equation? (*****You may not use every box every day during field experience.) Lesson Title/Number Lesson Question (s) Solve Algebraic Expressions and Equations 1) How do you solve an algebraic equation? 2) What is an expression (explain symbols x and y) 3) Give examples: Solve for: 6+y=7 6+y=7 -6 -6 _____________ y = 1 1) Solve equations and inequalities in one variable 2) Solve systems of equations.

State Standards and Performance Indicators Lesson Objectives (Blooms Taxonomy) ---------------------Acceptable Evidence

Students will be able to: 1. solve for algebraic equations 2. write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------*Could be collected for accountability/auditing purposes. Evidence that students have achieved objective # : Students will submit entry slips at the end of the lesson. The grade they earn will reflect their understanding of the lesson.

Bell Ringer and Prior Knowledge Tap This can be together or separate. Also may be called: set induction, anticipatory

The teacher will first provide each of the students with a bell ringer and then discuss prior knowledge of the lesson with their students. The students will then take time to work on the bell ringer.

set, introduction/review _______________ The teacher will: Procedure Teacher input, development, instructional method(s), modeling, guided practice, independent practice, and/or activities *Accommodations for learning modalities are required. Labelvisual, auditory, and kinesthetic * Technology Integration Include type and purpose Checks for Understanding Label: directions, procedures, routines, and content (formative) Beach Ball Game: The teacher will pass around a beach ball, with equations written on it, to five students. The fifth student that gets a ball will read the question. Then, the question will be put on the board so everyone will have a chance to answer the question. The students will always have to pass the beach ball to someone different in order for everyone to have a turn. Whiteboard Method: The teacher will provide each student with a whiteboard and dry-erase marker. The teacher will then put equations on the front board; the students will then copy that equation onto their whiteboards and solve it. Once the student is finished, they will hold up their whiteboards with the answer circled. The teacher will then check every students answer. Also, ask student (if answer is correct) how they solved the problem and explain it to the class along with a discussion. A ten problem test will be given to each student to see how they are following along with the topic. This will give the teacher an idea of what each students strengths and weaknesses are in this topic. introduce the lesson discussion give guided notes model problems and equations on the board give guided practice/work independent practice- individual white boards

The students will: take notes ask questions/ give answers get involved in class discussion solve problems/equations given to them on the board complete and submit bell ringers/ entry slips

Learning methods and how they are used in this lesson: Auditory: teacher and students communicating through discussion Visual: guided notes, equations/problems demonstrated on the board Kinesthetic: white boards, partner work

Assessment Type and purpose (sometimes called evaluation) Closure

If every student understands the lesson, move on to the next topic. Otherwise, go back and work on lesson more.
