Exploring the Classroom

When first entering the classroom, one might become overwhelmed simply because of the condition of the classroom. Unlike some other classrooms with individual desks, Ms. Johnsons class uses eight round tables with no more than four students at each table. The class is neatly organized, however due to the round tables it is somewhat difficult to move around the classroom at times. In the center of each table is a stack of Math and Science textbooks. Each child is also provided with a seat sack for the back of their chairs. The seat sack holds the students materials and books, so that the table will not become too crowded. On all of the walls of the room, posters can be found regarding Mathematics, Science, English, behavior expectations, etc. The students work is displayed on the bulletin board outside of the classroom. Ms. Johnson has about three places of storage. The largest supply cabinet is the main storage area in the class. In this cabinet, one can find science supplies, math supplies (blocks, calculators, etc.) extra school supplies, teacher resources and much more. The file cabinet holds mainly the administrative papers, worksheets, and grades of the students. The last place of storage is open to the class, but the students need permission to use some of the supplies. The basic supplies such as paper, pencils, and scissors are stored in this area. The bulletin board in the classroom acts as a disciplinary system. Each child has a card with his/her name on it. If the child is misbehaving, Ms. Johnson will tell the child to move his/ her card. As the child moves the card, it shows that their behavior has not been great and is acting in a disapproving manner. The back of the classroom is occupied with Ms. Johnsons homeroom students book bags. Extra textbooks can also be found at the back of the room. At the front of the room is the smart board. The curriculum standards and vocabulary words are displayed on both sides of the smart board. The classroom expectations, behavioral consequences and conduct grade computation are

displayed in two areas of the classroom. They can be found at the front of the classroom above the smart board and on the disciplinary bulletin board.
