Title of the Project

Automation of Electric Pump Control

Project Summary (Max. 150 words)

Automation of pump control is basically designed to help the people who are using water pumps in their daily activities. It aims at providing help to the farmers in villages as well as the people living in the cities. As a matter of concern in coming years, the useable water is going to be one of the scarce commodities. This would partly be attributable to our mismanagement of water supply and its wastage. In normal daily activities whether where pumps are used in irrigation of fields or pumps are used to fill the overhead tanks, it is usually observed that people switch on the pump and forget to switch it off even when enough water has been sprinkled in the fields or the tank has become full. As a result, water gets wasted until the people notice the overflow and switch the pump off. We Aim at providing a cheap and simple design to both the sections of the people living in rural areas (farmers) and people living in big multi-stories.

Technical details of the Project

o Origin of the Proposal
Now days the amount of useable water is decreasing at an alarming rate which is a major cause of concern and as a result steps should be taken from each and everyone. Water is always related to each person one way or the other whether living in a village or a city. In cities people generally store water in the Overhead Tanks (OHT) and use it when needed and when the water level goes down in these tanks they try to make up by using a water pump which fetches the water form the water storage tank at the bottom of the building. This involves staring the pump again and again when needed and stop when the OHT is filled, also care must be taken for not allowing the water to overflow from the OHTs which is not the case usually so water overflows and we here provide a solution to all this by automating the pump used.

Also in the villages we see that farmers use sprinkles to water their crops according to the crop cycle, this practice involves a lot of water mismanagement and a large amount of water is wasted so to come up with the solution we automate the pump which will switch on the supply when the soil need water to be sprinkled and this estimation is done using the resistance between the soil.

o Definition of the problem

The basic problem which gives rise to the construction of this project is the prevailing scarcity of water especially in the states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh which makes an inevitable point to use water judiciously .According to the recent stats Rajasthan can produce only 1% of the water which it consumes, so the water preservation is the of the utmost importance in the concerned states. To make up for the problem we propose this simple solution.

o Objectives
1. To provide a new technology for automation of agriculture fields for irrigation purposes, also avoid the waste of water which occurs in the older irrigation system. 2. Reduction of water mismanagement in the daily household activities like Storing of water in the overhead tanks, watering of plants etc From this project we can reduce the manpower

The automatic pump controller eliminates the need for any manual switching of pumps installed for the purpose of pumping water from a reservoir to an overhead tank. It automatically switches on the pump when the water level in the tank falls below a certain low level (L), provided the water level in the reservoir is above a certain level (R). Subsequently, as the water level in the tank rises to an upper level (M), the pump switched off automatically. The pump is turned on again only when the water level again falls below level L in the tank, provided the level in the reservoir is above R. This automated action continues. The circuit is designed to overlook the transient oscillations of the water level which would otherwise cause the logic to change its state rapidly and unnecessarily. The circuit uses a single CMOS chip (CD4001) for logic processing. No use of any moving electro-mechanical parts in the water-level sensor has been made. This ensures quick response, no wear and tear, and no mechanical failures. The device performed satisfactorily on a test run in conjunction with a 0.5 HP motor and pump. The sensors used in the circuit can be any two conducting probes, preferably resistant to electrolytic corrosion. For instance, in the simplest case, a properly sealed audio jack can be used to work as the sensor. The circuit can also be used as a constant fluid level maintainer. For this purpose the probes M and L are brought very close to each other to ensure that the fluid level is maintained within the M and L levels. The advantage of this system is that it can be used in tanks/reservoirs of any capacity whatsoever.

For irrigation purposes we have the circuit comprising of sensor parts built using op-amp IC LM324. Op-amp's are configured here as a comparator. Two stiff copper wires are inserted in the soil to sense the whether the Soil is wet or dry. The Microcontroller was used to control the whole system it monitors the sensors and when more than two sensors sense the dry condition then the microcontroller will switch on the motor and it will switch off the motor when all the sensors are in wet. The microcontroller does the above job it receives the signals from the sensors, and this signals operated under the control of software which is stored in ROM.
