The story is one that has its roots

Christmas By Te Lake In Silverton
Te sixth annual Christmas by the Lake from Friday, Nov-
ember 30 to Sunday, December 2 is guaranteed to get you
in the festive mood for yet another year. Indeed, there is
no other event that can ofer such a wonderful fun-packed
weekend with something to entertain all family members,
from the very young to those merely young at heart. Te
sparkling-lit Christmas Village, a collection of festively
adorned wooden booths, stands before the historic Silver-
ton Gallery creating a unique, magical world of European
yuletide cheer. Enjoy roasting bannock and chestnuts
over the open fres and the evocative aromas of tradition-
al Christmas cuisine as you wander through the village.
Certainly, there will be plenty of choice when it comes to
food and drink to savour and delight, ranging from numer-
ous delicacies such as Gluehwein, bratwurst, crpes, soup,
European stollen and more. Within the gallery itself there
will be over 30 local artisans ofering an appealing range of
quality Christmas gifs for friends and family.
Happily, one of the most popular attractions for the small-
er folk will be returning this year. Celebrated Peter Vogelaar
will be sculpting his magnifcent, legendary ice slide while
Luc Vreys will be demonstrating his woodcarving skills.
Take part in the raf e to win one of Lucs welcome sculp-
tures. Once again, you can watch other traditional craf art-
ists at work including Jamie Barber blacksmithing, Colette
Beaulieu basket weaving and, new this year, glassblowing
by Studio & Gallery Ourglass, Nelson. Of course Santa will
be taking a break from his busy schedule to visit Christmas
by the Lake and will arrive on Saturday at noon to have his
picture taken with the many children present. Te Grinch
and Gingerbread Man will also be visiting. Other childrens
attractions include a contest to win a Nikon Coolpix Digit-
al Camera (contestants must be 16 years and under). Te
challenge will be to locate a picture, depicted on the contest
form, somewhere within the Christmas by the Lake grounds.
By popular demand, the Christmas card and cookie decora-
tion workshop will also be returning.
A glittering array of splendid
entertainment is scheduled over
the weekend, beginning with
Matthew and Julie Frys Fire-
side Choir on Friday evening
singing traditional Christmas
carols, while the Nakusp Com-
munity Band and the Mental
Health Club of Slocan, with
their traditional old-time sound,
will perform on Saturday. Other
musicians on Saturday will in-
clude Leah Main and Michael
Dorsey while at 4 pm and 5 pm
the amazing, young fre dancers,
Illuminadis, will be performing
their spectacular show. Make
a special date on Sunday to lis-
ten to the Slocan Valley Band at
12pm, followed by Hank Hast-
ings on accordion at 2 pm. Please
note that there will be a free bus
service from Nelson to Silverton
and back on Saturday.
Christmas by the Lake festiv-
ities begin Friday afernoon at
4 pm, followed by the lighting
of the Christmas Village and
the tolling of the bell at 5 pm
when the New Denver Royal-
ty will launch Christmas by the
Lake. Bring the family to this
full weekend event that ofers a
truly unique opportunity to ex-
perience the magic and charm of
an enchanted European Christ-
mas celebration, reminiscent of
a German Christmas market or
Dickensian faire.

Camera Club Contest
Join in the fun and submit your favourite pictures to the
23rd Annual WKCC Photo Show 2013 competition, to be
held early next year. As in the past, there are several categor-
ies to be displayed and judged. With many new categories

New Fish And Wildlife
Compensation Program
Afer extensive stakeholder and First Nations engage-
ment during the spring and summer of 2012, followed
by a thorough analysis of the shortlisted options, the Fish
and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) steering
committee in the Columbia region is ready to roll out the
new delivery model. It aims to strengthen the programs
regional independence and decisionmaking, while re-
taining strong links with the program partners.
We really tried to get the best of both worlds, say FWCP
public representatives Dave White and Rick Morley.
Stakeholders and First Nations told us they wanted more
regional decisionmaking, and the steering committee
truly believes that the new model will achieve this while
retaining close links to the partners so that the FWCP can
beneft from their considerable inkind support, such as
legal, contracting and administration services.
Te three program partners behind the FWCP in the
Columbia region are BC Hydro, the Province of BC and
Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
A stronger, more regionallyfocused board will re-
place the current steering committee structure. Te same
people who have been guiding this process and working
towards this new model will continue on as board mem-
bers and, over the course of the next 12 months, will
work with the program partners towards renewing the
governance documents. Tese documents detail a variety
of operational aspects including reporting relationships,
roles and responsibilities, representation on technical and
steering committees, and communications.
Tere will also be a designated level funding for project
applications from environmental groups, community or-
ganizations, stakeholders, and First Nations.
To ensure the right resources are available to deliver a
wide range of conservation and enhancement projects,
the FWCP will use a mix of contracts and contribution
agreements both short and longterm. For smooth con-
tinuity of the program, the FWCP plans to enter into a
long term agreement with the province to use a variety of
resources, including contractors and staf, to deliver core
FWCP projects.
Tis arrangement has several advantages, including being
able to share knowledge and information with the province,
ease permitting, reduce overheads, and allow stakeholders
and public to continue to have access to biologists.
Te Compensation Program conserves and enhances
fsh and wildlife, and their supporting habitats, afected by
the creation of BC Hydroowned and operated generation
facilities. BC Hydro invests approximately $4.5 million in
the program each year in the Columbia region. For more

Annual Winter Faire
On Saturday, November 24, as we get closer to the
darkest part of the year, the Nelson Waldorf School will
host their annual Winter Faire. It is a wholesome natur-
al celebration of the coming magical winter season and
festivals of light.
Te entire school site is transformed into a winter vil-
lage...there are winter crafs and wool works for creative
fun. Candle dipping is a silent meditative place that brings
forth the inner beauty and peace of this season. Te chil-
dren-only store is full of beautiful handmade gifs for chil-
dren to do some gif shopping. Tere is a bakery to experi-
ence the diferent stages of bread making.
When you are hungry you can fnd a warm Solstice
soup at the Frost Bite Cafe, or hot cider and wieners at
the Fireside Cafe.
Past the central fre and the village feld is the Cedar For-
est Gnome Celebration in the Kinderhouse. Children of
all ages eagerly await to go into the much loved Cookie
Kingdom to hear the story from the King or Queen and
choose a cookie. Tere are also delicious healthy gnome
snacks in the Gnome Cafe and a craf for nimble fngers in
the gnome craf room.
In the Silver King artisan market local artists sell their
handmade and natural wares accompanied by seasonal
music. Tere is also lots of savories, sweets, cofee, chai
and eggnog at the Rudolph Cafe by the market.
Te village Snowfake Village Teatre will be ofering per-
formances for $3 per person at 11 am, 12 pm and 1:30 pm.
All childrens activities are from 10 am to 3 pm and the
artisan market is open until 4 pm. Find the Waldorf School
a 5 minute drive from Nelson on Highway 6, heading to-

Selkirk Wilderness
Commences 2012/13 Operations
On December 1st, 2012 Selkirk Wilderness Skiing of Meadow Creek, BC,
will commence its thirty-eighth year of operation on Meadow Mountain.
The upcoming season will mark the twenty-eighth anniversary of The
Signage Plan, a community and government sponsored agreement which
provides closure of the snowcat trails and skiing terrain tenured to Selkirk
Wilderness Skiing by the Province of British Columbia. The Signage Plan is
supported by HeliCat Canada, the BC Snowmobile Federation, the Canada
West Ski Areas Association, the Nelson Snogoers, the provincial government,
and the residents of Kaslo and the Lardeau Valley. It includes the posting
of signs which identify snowmobile access routes in and out of the Back
Meadows, the area designated for public winter use on Meadow Mountain
during the closure, and signs which identify the snowcat trails closed to the
public from December 1st until mid April.

Selkirk Wilderness Skiing is committed to continued winter access to the
area of traditional public use in the Back Meadows. Snowmobilers, skiers
and snowboarders from our region have cooperated well with The Signage
Plan over the years, and we truly appreciate the assistance from local users in
educating visitors from beyond the Kootenays about the plan. Compliance
with the signage is critical to our continued and safe operation: the
snowcat trails are steep, winding, and narrow, and many are one way only.
Indiscriminate use of the snowcat trails and the skiing terrain could result in
a serious collision between a snowmobile and a skier, or a snowmobile and
a snowcat, or other mishaps.

Selkirk Wilderness Skiing was the frst snowcat skiing operation of its kind
in the world. We employ many local people and generate many economic
benefts for the community. The support of our community has contributed
signifcantly to these local benefts, and to the safety and enjoyment of our
guests and other winter users of Meadow Mountain.

The signage will be removed in early to mid April and a notice regarding the
exact date will be posted in the Nelson Star and the Pennywise in mid March.

In the sacred realm, Cottonwood will

and Maurice Durufs Ubi Caritas, and
will double up with Lalen for a perform-
ance of Morten Lauridsens powerful O

VHKAS Supports Kootenay Health Care
Te Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society (VH-
KAS) is 110 years old this year. Tat is a tribute to the spirit
of this town but some days our members really feel the bu-
rden of keeping this society alive. So it was extra special to
see so many young faces at our Fall Fling in October. Nearly
the entire JV Humphries Grade 12 class participated (Beth-
any, Cassie, Desiree, Jessie and Rosemary on the runway,
April, Ava, Ayzel, Biarki, Cassandra, Gillis, Isaac, Ryan,
Ross, Tasha and Tyberius behind the scenes); Emerson and
Makenna nearly stole the show, and Aiko, Darcie, Karine
and Sarah from our community, helped by Mabel, modeled
more glamorous gowns, even a wedding dress with bouquet.
For those who were not there, not only did you miss some
good pie and a fun show, but also the chance to show sup-
port for the VHKAS and its mission of supporting the life-
long health and wellbeing of our community.
Despite the current health care challenges, the VHKAS
continues its work. Tis year fnally sees the installation of
a new and much improved internal communication system
at the Health Centre and Residential Care Facility. VHKAS
contributed $30,000 towards this Rauland Responder 4000
Call System. As well, our Society donated $10,000 to the
Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital appeal to purchase a
Digital Mammography Machine in Trail, and just this Nov-
ember, made a $3000 donation to the Hospice Society of
North Kootenay Lake. Tese are just the highlights.
We appreciate the support our community gives us with
donations to and purchases from the Trif Store, our major
fundraiser, but some new faces at our meetings, and at our

Are You Ready For Tis World?
Warpworld is the frst in a fve-book science fction
adventure series, co-written by Nelson author Kristene
Perron and her Texan writing partner, Joshua Simpson.
Perron will launch Warpworld Tursday, November 29 at
7:30 pm at the Nelson Public Library.
Te story centers around two young rebels, from two
very diferent worlds. Seg, an arrogant but brilliant cul-
tural theorist, is on his frst inter-dimensional mission to
scout for vita necessary fuel for his dying world. Ama, a
fery and headstrong boat captain, bursting at the shackles
of her gender and caste, is hired to act as his guide. When
a violent murder reveals Segs true identity, the two must
strike an uneasy truce to survive, while the fate of two
worlds rests in their hands. One reviewer called it total
immersion of the heart-pounding variety.
Kristene Perron is a former professional stunt per-
former for flm and television (as Kristene Kenward) and
self-described fshing goddess. Pathologically nomadic,
she has lived in Japan, Costa Rica, the Cook Islands and a
very tiny key in the Bahamas, just to name a few.
My suitcase is always packed, says Perron. I tend to
have one foot elsewhere, all the time. Maybe thats why
having a writing partner 3000 km away, writing about an-
other planet altogether, isnt such a stretch.
Perrons stories have appeared in Canadian Storyteller
Magazine, Te Barbaric Yawp, Hemispheres Magazine and
Denizens of Darkness. In 2010 she won the Surrey Inter-
national Writers Conference Storyteller Award and she is
the current chair of the Kootenay Literary Competition
Committee. She is a member of Speculative Fiction Canada.

Slocan Library Author Series
On Sunday, November 4, the Slocan Community Library
held the second reading in its 2012 authors series with spe-
cial guest Anne DeGrace. A large audience of some 28 to
30 listened intently as Anne shared her interest in writing
novels and read excerpts from her books: Treading Water
(which won the Kootenay Librarians choice award) and
Flying with Amelia,
her latest book. As

the ups and downs

various publishers

volved in getting her

Amphitheatre Seating Report
Hey everyone take a swing by the logger sports
grounds and check out the new seating. Volunteers and lo-
cal workers took advantage of our spectacular fall weather
to construct fve rows of cement block, amphitheatre style
seating in twelve days. We have also installed the conduit
for power and water on the grounds. Now were ready for
all the spectators who come to enjoy Kaslos annual logger
sports show. Te grounds are multi-functional and avail-
able for all kinds of community events.
Our log rolling pond has been reconstructed afer be-
ing torn apart by the spring foods and is now surrounded
by a nice fence for
safety. Well be do-
ing some fne tuning
of the grounds in the
spring afer everything
has settled and were
hoping to replace the
two concession build-
ings. Tats it for our
$25,000 TSN/Kraf
winnings, as well as
another $15,000 pro-
vided by logger sports
for total improvements
of $40,000. We hope
everyone is pleased.
Tis work could not
have been done with-
out the tremendous
help of Ron Saalfeld
and his large equip-
ment. We are very
grateful for Rons help,
especially when he is
still recuperating from quadruple bypass heart surgery.
Also providing equipment and help were Clint Carlson,
Jef Mattes, Barrie Woodhurst, Henry Van Mille, Dave
Sicotte and Stan Baker. Paddy Flanagan and Kim Plani-
din put in many hours of technical and physical assistance
and of course, YRB and the Village of Kaslo helped out in
a big way. Great job everyone.
Finally, logger sports will be trying a two day show in
2013. Tere was just too much activity to squeeze into one
marathon day. Two shorter days will allow us to retain all
of the fun activities at a more relaxed and enjoyable pace.
We need more volunteers to help run the show, so please
