Global Health Partnerships

Aside from reaching out and providing healthcare support to local communities in the Philippines, the Pfizer Philippines Foundation also leverages its global network and its brand as a responsible corporate citizen to embark on campaigns that support pro-activeness and vigilance in health among Filipinos all over.
In 2007, the Foundation launched on the Quit Smoking Support Program (QUITSS), a program implemented in partnership with Philippine Business for Social Progress, to roll out a "smoke-free workplace" program in 40 firms around the Philippines. Running for three years and with a budget of $220,000, including a local matching fund from Pfizer Foundation US, QUITSS enjoined the support of 39 firms and organizations and 10 schools. Popular singer-activist Noel Cabangon composed the program's jingle. As of the close of the program in 2010, 18 more schools have expressed their interest to conduct advocacy sessions or install the program in their institutions. QUITSS also won the Philippine Quill Merit Award for Communication Management in the Economic, Social, and Environmental Development Category in 2009. Another of Pfizer Philippines Foundation's projects is Ating Dibdibin, its project with I CAN SERVE and the American Cancer Society. The project involved installing a community-based breast screening program as part of Marikina City's healthcare services. Running from 2008 to 2010, and with a total budget of $20,000, with a local matching fund from Pfizer Foundation US, Ating Dibdibin trained 200 doctors and health workers, screened more than 2,000 women whose

progress was tracked, and increased awareness for early breast cancer detection, with more people visiting the Marikina Breast Clinic. It also established the Marikina Breast Cancer Registry and tapped as its endorser multi-award-winning thespian, Lea Salong. As of the close of the program, other cities have expressed their intent to install the program in their localities, with Cebu City identified as the next site. As a global healthcare company that places emphasis on research-based treatments and healthcare solutions, Pfizer deems it important to improve the research capacity of local doctors, healthcare workers, health scientists, and healthcare agencies.

Volunteerism

In its more than 55 years as one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the country, Pfizer has always considered its people as critical in achieving its goal to help Filipinos live healthier and longer lives. And over the years, the employees of Pfizer have lived up to this expectation through their active participation in company programs that address various health and social concerns of the local community.

ENGAGE is Pfizers employee volunteerism program, and was conceived in 2005, after a company-wide survey on employee volunteerism showed that the majority of employees value employee volunteerism, and felt that they could still get more involved in community service. The employees of Pfizer share the companys commitment to working for a healthier Philippines. Through ENGAGE, they are provided with opportunities to share time, talent and resources with the communities that Pfizer serves. ENGAGE is a concrete demonstration of the companys core value of Community. Since 2006, the involvement of Pfizer colleagues has been more than favorable. In its first year of implementation, ENGAGE has demonstrated not only Pfizers but, most importantly, the employees sincere commitment to making a sustainable and significant difference in the community. More than the number of company and personal hours that a Pfizer employee puts into ENGAGE, are the positive changes in an employees attitude and outlook on employee volunteerism and the value of giving back to the communities where they live and work.

Community Health
Pfizer Phils Foundation & PBSP launch 1st ever Pfizer Blue House in the country In Bacacay, Albay, the population of almost 65,000 has only nine health stations and only two doctors, one dentist, one dental aid, two nurses, nine midwives, one medical technologist, and one sanitary inspector. The numbers are staggering; the statistics clearly reflect the health and access status of this small town. Whats even more saddening is the fact that these numbers may actually represent the status not just of Bacacay, but the whole country. Responding to the dire needs of the community, Pfizer Philippines Foundation Inc (PPFI), together with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) entered into a partnership with the Bacacay local government in September 2009. Called the Pfizer Blue House, the project seeks to improve the accessibility of quality healthcare services in select underserved communities. Included in the plans are the construction of a barangay health station, delivery of basic medical equipment, administration of capability and skills enhancement training sessions for barangay health workers and community-based organizations and an information and education campaign on healthcare for the residents themselves.

Last March 12, PPFI launched the first ever Blue House in Barangay Sula, Bacacay, Albay. The event was attended by no less than PPFIs Chairman, Ahmet Genel, PBSPs Executive Director Rafael Rapa C. Lopa, Bacacay Mayor Tobias Betito and Sulas Barangay Captain Benjamin Belbes. Almost 280 people, both children and adults, were present to participate in the launch and blessing of the Blue House. Pfizer's Bicol-based sales colleagues likewise conducted an 'ENGAGE' volunteer activity by conducting educational games and distributing Pfizer Consumer Healthcare products. This is a very heartwarming initiative, very inspiring and uplifting. In line with helping together to be able to contribute to the country, the launch of the Blue House signifies the realization of all the hard work and dedication of colleagues and local communities, said Genel. As a pharmaceutical company, we are expected to produce quality medicines that help cure diseases. But to go beyond that, and actually make a conscious effort to help improve the overall healthcare of Filipinos, indicates an innate desire borne out of malasakit and a wellrooted sense of Corporate Social Responsibility. We are very pleased that PBSP and other partners share this aspiration with us, and that we have their support in endeavors such as this, said Patricia Pascual, Vice Chairman of PPFI. Rafael Rapa C. Lopa reiterated that the Blue House project is Pfizers response to a call for quality healthcare by Bacacay residents, and giving them access to basic health will go a long way in safeguarding their health. We are truly proud of being a part of this momentous event, the launch of the first Pfizer Blue House in the country. We are all very thankful to Pfizer Philippines Foundation for looking into the health situation in the country. It is now a matter of scaling up the work that Pfizer started. Now, the hard part begins, shared Lopa. The Pfizer Blue House is indeed a strong testament to promote collaboration and work with partners for a healthier world!
