Participation in this event brings me happiness as it gives me the chance to help co-Filipinos here in Korea. Selling tickets for the charity purpose of the event is a pleasure, since voluntarism is a principle in my life. The opportunity to share my talent and thoughts made me whole. Lastly, it is an honor for me to be part of the effort to share the Pilipino culture here in South Korea. I want to thank the people behind this event for choosing me as one of the participants.

Jessah Mae Rosales Kim I joined this pageant to promote our wonderful culture and tradition. Another significance is personal; joining the event builds myself confidence and self esteem which are good characters for a woman to have nowadays. June Rose Sinajon More than anything, I am participating in this pageant because of the charity work involved. My family and friends know Im too introverted to join something like this, but I believe in helping people and helping people almost always requires some self-sacrifice.

Covenant Love: Introducing the Biblical Worldview

Lesson Three: Our Father, Abraham (Continuation)

II. Our Father Abraham
(Continuation)

C. Signs of Flesh and Spirit

Abraham believed that God would give his only beloved son back to him. And by this faith, he upheld his obligation to the covenant he entered into with God. God made faith in His promises the condition of His covenant with Abraham. Faith is likewise the condition of those who would enter into the New Covenant made in Jesus. We see this worked out in the letters of St. Paul, especially in His letters to the Romans and the Galatians. Abraham, Paul says, is "the father of all...who believe" (see Romans 4:1112). What the Scripture said of Abraham "faith was credited Abraham as righteousness" is also the condition required of us. We, too, must trust in God's promise, "believe in the One who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead" (see Romans 4:9, 23-24). The blessings that God promised to bestow on the world through the descendants of Abraham come to us through our faith in the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus. The sacrifice of Christ brings to us "the blessing of Abraham" (see Galatians 3:14). These blessings of our father Abraham flow to us in Baptism, which is the sign of the New Covenant, as circumcision was the sign of God's covenant with Abraham. God made circumcision to be a sign of His covenant oath to make Abraham's descendants a royal dynasty: "Thus my covenant shall be in your flesh as an everlasting pact" (see Genesis 17:1-14). But as St. Paul teaches, this covenant sign in the flesh was meant also to symbolize the spiritual and sacramental sign by which we enter into the New Covenant, the royal family of God. Already in the prophets, "circumcision of the heart" had become a sign of dedication o f one's whole being to God (see Deuteronomy 10:16; Jeremiah 4:4; compare Romans 2:25-29; 1 Corinthians 7:18-19). The prophet Jeremiah said that the law of the New Covenant would be written on the heart (see Jeremiah 31:31-34).

And this happens in Baptism, which is the "circumcision of Christ" (see Colossians 2:11) and the true circumcision (see Philippians 3:3). This is where the math comes in: Add up the As circumcision was the sign of membership in numbers given in the account of the the people of Abraham, the "new circumcision" - Baptism - is the sign of membership in the descendants of Shem's line (see Genesis 11:1026): Abraham is born 290 years after Shem's Church, the new people of God. first-born, Arpachshad. Now, if Shem is 100 And it is in those baptized in the Church that years old when Arpachshad is born, that means the promise to Abraham is fulfilled - that "a that he's 390 when Abraham is born. And, if great multitude, which no one could count, Shem lived five hundred years after from every nation, race, people and tongue" Arpachshad's birth, and Abraham lived to be

would find blessing and salvation in the God of 175 years old (see Genesis 25:7), that means Abraham (compare Genesis 15:5 and that Shem outlived Abraham by 35 years. Revelation 7:9-10). Who cares? Why does it matter? Well, for the ancient rabbis and for centuries of early D. Shem's Blessing Christian interpreters, including probably the God promises to bless Abraham. And we author of the Letter to Hebrews, it mattered a know that those blessings come in his great deal. It's also the key to figuring out descendants, especially in Jesus. But during the what's happening between Abraham and course of Genesis, the only actual blessing that Melchizedek in Genesis 14. Abraham receives is from the mysterious kingAccording to a long tradition - Jewish and priest, Melchizedek (see Genesis 14:18-20). To receive Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim are his father's blessing was every son's goal. In the all kingdoms descended from Canaan, son of Bible, this "natural" pattern is given a Noah's wicked son, Ham (see Genesis 10:6, supernatural spin - not to mention some 19). Shinar is another kingdom descended from unexpected twists. Ham (see Genesis 10:6, 10). Elam appears God intended to bestow His blessings on the descended from Shem (see Genesis 10:22). And world through His "first-born," Adam. But the kingdom of Goiim (in Hebrew, literally "the Adam, through his pride and disobedience, nations") appears descended from Japheth, failed to live up to the obligations of his father of "the maritime nations" (see Genesis birthright. So, God raised up a new first-born, 10:5). Noah, who proved to be "a good man and The battle lines drawn up in Genesis 14 are blameless in that age" (see Genesis 6:9). confusing, but here's what happened: the king Through the faithfulness of Noah, God of Elam, aligned with three other kingdoms, renewed his covenant with creation and the defeated an alliance of the kings of Sodom, human family (see Genesis 9:1-17). But the Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboim and Zoar, reducing first-born Noah, like Adam before him, fell into them to servitude (see Genesis 14:17). sin (see Genesis 9:20-22). Still, despite man's Abraham, in turn, defeats the alliance led by the unfaithfulness, God is always faithful to His king of Elam, in order to rescue his nephew, covenant promises. So He turns to a new first- Lot, who had been seized as a prisoner of war in the earlier battle. born, Shem, the righteous first-born of Noah. As a result, the descendent of Shem, Shem receives a cosmic blessing from Noah "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem!" - Abraham, now ruled over the descendants of which marks the first time in Scripture that God Ham and Japheth - just as Noah had prophesied is identified with any one human being (see would happen (see Genesis 9:25-27). In fact, we don't hear To be continued anything more about him - except that he has sons and that ten generations later one of his descendants, Terah, gives birth to three sons, the first-born of which is Abraham (see Genesis 11:26-27). It is very curious, though, that we never see Shem - heralded as the most righteous of the men born after the Flood handing on his blessing to his first-born or to any one of his children.
