The Church of the Nazarene in Port Clinton serves a meal prior to their Bible study every Wednesday evening. Our church has been providing the meal the 1st Wednesday of each month for the past two years. We have been blessed to get acquainted with a wonderful group of young people and adults. If you would like to help plan, prepare or serve this meal, please sign up on the Opportunity Table. This is a wonderful way to serve others. If you have not helped with the meal in the past, please know that we will work with you.

Kitchen Reminders
We thank you for taking the kitchen towels home to wash. Please make sure they are returned as soon as possible. The towel drawers are looking a bit empty. If you use the dish washer in the kitchen, please double check to make sure the switch is in the off position before you leave. If left on, we waste energy and could cause damage to the unit. Thank You.

Filling the Dumpster

As part of our effort to cut costs, last spring we changed to a smaller dumpster. Its working out fine unless lots of extra trash is thrown in. If you happen to be the person throwing stuff in the dumpster, please make sure to break all your boxes down so therell be room for our regular trash. If youre interested in daily lectionary readings, go to http://www.pcusa.org/devotions part of the Presbyterian Church (USA) website. You can read the texts online, subscribe to an email list to receive them daily, print out a reading list, or listen to them read out loud.

Seasonal Singers
Yes, we will have a choir for Advent. Bill Shannon has agreed to direct. Thank you, Bill! Well let you know soon when rehearsals will begin. Newcomers are welcome!

Offering Envelopes
The reason the Financial Stewardship Committee continues the practice of ordering Offering Envelopes is because it makes the task of tracking your gifts easier for both the weekly counters and our Financial Secretary. The purpose of the Initial Offering Envelope is a gift, in addition to your regular contribution, that helps cover the cost of the envelopes and also the expense of supporting our Presbytery (our required Per Capita dues for every member). A guideline for your consideration is to make a gift of $30.00 in the 2013 Initial Offering Envelope. In early 2013, please help us by picking up your box of Offering Envelopes at the Church or let us know if you would prefer we mail them to your home. Giving thanks to God, always. Alison Falls & Janet Gray-Moore

Preliminary Budget 2013

Our Church General Fund preliminary budget for 2013 is $143,000, only $500 less than last year. Our first attempt was based on a lower anticipated income, but we said nothis is now the minimum it will take to operate our church next year. Faith came through last year in that we were able to restore some very undesirable planned cutsan example being our members taking over the cleaning of much of the church. This not happening was made possible thanks to a members generous gift. We are counting on faith for next year also, making it possible to change this from our preliminary budget to our final budget after the results of our pledge drive are known. It should be noted that this budget does not include our Preschool Operations, which is a separate budget. The Preschool Budget is for $79,650 in Income and Expense. Administrative Assistant (through reduced hours) are now making less. Our contributions previously sent to Presbytery for their Mission Work have been eliminated, though we still collect for two church-wide offerings: One Great Hour of Sharing and Christmas Joy. Mission has always been very important to our church. Besides the many hours our members devote to our local mission programs, these programs continue and are still funded by your contributions on your pledge envelopes to Mission, and from memorials and contributions to our Food Pantry from you and the community. If anybody would like a copy of our detailed Preliminary Budget for 2013, or has questions concerning the budget, please see Alison Falls, Chair, Bill Umlauf, Treasurer, or any member of the Finance/Stewardship Committee. A summary of the main categories of our budget is below:

The trend over the last decade has been a loss of membership resulting in cuts to our budget including no raises for our employees in recent years. Actually our Custodian, Preschool Director, Preschool Teacher and GENERAL FUND PRELIMINARY BUDGET 2013 Total Income EXPENSE: Per Capita Church Programming Worship & Music Office Property Management Pastoral Compensation Payroll Expense TOTAL EXPENSE $4,182 $2,150 3,200 $10,752 $27,991 $73,835 $20,890 $143,000 $143,000

Preschool Tidbits
Its hard to believe that Summer has come and gone and Fall is here. Our room has been filled with colored leaf projects, pumpkins, Jack-o-lanterns, bats, ghosts and little trick or treaters. Everyone has had a wonderfully spooky month. Our academic lessons are always intertwined with our monthly theme. We will sincerely miss Kaye Elliot as our Session liaison. Her dedication to the preschool has been way above and beyond expectations. THANK YOU, KAYE !!!!! At the same time we are looking forward to working with Marsha Bordner our new liaison. Stated Session Meeting Highlights for Oct. 9, 2012

Devotions: Connie Brand, 1 Thessalonians, Chapter 3, vs. 6-12; Drawing the Circle Wider. Report of the Clerk (Dave Moore): Minutes of the September 11, 2012 session meeting were reviewed and approved. The minutes of the Annual Meeting from September 30, 2012 were reviewed; no changes were recommended. A request for transfer for Cortney Cook to the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Gilead, OH was approved by session. There is also a request (via conversation with Karen Coffin) from Dolly Kresge to remove the Kresge children from the active roll at Firelands Church (Matt, Ashley, Andrew, and Christina). This request was approved by majority vote of session. Personnel (John Madison, chair): Review/Discussion. Jeanne answered three questions for us pertinent to her yearly review. Treasurers Report (Bill Umlauf): September was a very good month in our Church General Fund. Also, Preschool had a small gain in September although yearto-date shows a loss due to a poor summer. Due to full enrollment in our Fall Preschool it is forecast that this Preschool loss will be significantly reduced or eliminated by year end. Financial Stewardship (Alison Falls, chair): The Financial Stewardship committee believes that a breakeven year for Preschool is still possible, but not probable. With attention to billings, hours/salary expense and accounts receivables, our Preschool can be both an excellent preschool and a break-even operation. Bill Umlauf reported that he did an historical analysis of Preschool performance and that, on balance, Preschool has indeed broken even over time. The Finance Committee will review the 2013 Budget in November and again in December, as results of the 2013 Stewardship Campaign come in. The Committee will present a reaffirmation and/or revision to the preliminary 2013 Budget to Session at the December meeting for final approval. Prior to the service on Sunday, October 14, Alison Falls will speak on our spiritual message for the 2013 Stewardship campaign. On Sunday, October 21st, Pastor Jeanne will have a sermon on stewardship. Prior to the service on Sunday, November 4th, Alison Falls and Bill Umlauf will discuss two articles that are planned for the November Trumpet regarding stewardship and how the funds are budgeted for 2013 as well as on the intent of the initial offering envelope. And Sunday, November 11th will be the thanksgiving and dedication of pledges for 2013. Lastly, thanks to Bill Sharp and Bill Umlauf for their work in cataloging the Richmond prints. We now have a good inventory of all the prints, the type, quality, etc. An announcement has appeared in the Trumpet re sale to members and friends. A plan to market our prints on eBay is in process. This took a lot of time and attention to detailthank you so very much! Committee Reports Church Growth (Karen Coffin, Chair): We are progressing on the Validation of Memberships. Four categories have been established: Active Members: participate in the churchs work and worship Inactive Members w/ Special circumstances: relatives, homebound etc. Friends of Firelands: participate in work & worship, but not members Inactive Members: do not participate in work or worship.

Inactive Members (about 20) will receive contacts to validate their desired category. Inactive members w/ Special Circumstances (about 24) will receive contacts at the discretion of the committee. The Per Capita will be $27.88 this year. It is estimated that we will pay about $1100 for currently inactive members if the rolls remain the same. Additionally, Mary Caracci attended our session meeting tonight to give us a detailed presentation re: marketing efforts to grow our church. The committee is trying to get a professional web site designer to do our website. Bids are out. The committee is also looking at web radio, WPCR. Planning is underway by the Church Growth Committee to trial WPCR for four months at $70/week. For $70/week a 30 min on demand tape of our church service would be accessible all week from the WPCR home page. There would also be a banner ad on the WPCR web site with click through to our churchs website. Discussion ensued and in fact we already have corporate and private sponsors to pick up the cost during most of the first four months. The motion passed by majority vote. This will begin sometime soon, hopefully in time for the Advent Season. Report of the Pastor (Jeanne Gay): Ordination and installation of elders and deacons is tentatively scheduled for November 4th. [Editors note: This has been moved to November 11.] A church leadership retreat will be planned for Sunday November 18. Topics to be addressed include New Beginnings; Church

Life Cycle; Who we are, where are we going Just as we did this past spring, Session members will be calling the members of our congregation. This will be scheduled for some time in January or February, 2013. Old Business: The audit is complete. There were two minor questions, no recommendations from the auditor. Dave Wahlers has been coordinating. New Business: none. Respectfully submitted, Dave Moore, Clerk of Session

PASTORS PAGE:
Theres a lot going on at Firelands these days. Were saying good-bye to folks leaving for Florida and other parts south. But were also working on a project that will help those peopleand otherskeep in touch over the winter. Internet Radio Starting in December, at the beginning of Advent (if all goes well), we will broadcast about a half hour of our worship service each week on internet radiowww.portclintonradio.com. Each weeks broadcast will include a scripture reading, the sermon, and the prayer of the church, plus a few announcements about whats coming up at Firelands and some information about the church. Well give you more information about how to listen in when we have more specific instructions, but I can tell you that youll be able to listen any time youre ready, as each of our shows will be available on-demand for a week. Why are we doing this? One reason is so that members and friends who are away from the Port Clinton area can tune in and feel a part of whats going on. Another is for increased visibility to Eastern Ottawa County residents and people who visit the area. And a third is because we think we have good news to share with the worldthe good news of the gospel! Were going to try this for four months, to see how it goes and how many people tune in to listen. Please talk it up with your friends, and if you miss a Sunday at church, tune in yourself! Broadcasting on internet radio is not free. It will cost us $70 a week. At the Session meeting in which we heard about this project and approved it, we came up with almost enough money to cover the four-month trial period. If youd like to sponsor a week of Firelands Presbyterian on the air, please let me know. Naked Spirituality Almost a dozen of us have been meeting every other Monday evening to discuss Brian McLarens Naked Spirituality. Discussions have been wide-ranging and sometimes intense, as weve worked with issues like confessing our sins and asking for Gods help. If youve not been part of the group, you may want to pick up a copy of the book. Its a good one! Leadership Retreat On Sunday afternoon, November 18, as many of us as possible will gather to talk about our church and its future. We know that most churches in North America are losing members; we know that younger people in particular are not joining or even attending church in nearly the numbers they used to; we can guess that churches in the middle of the 21st century will look very different from churches in 2000. So what does that mean for Firelands Presbyterian Church? We cant know that for sure, but what we do know is that healthy congregationscongregations that are growing and thrivinghave a clear sense of mission, purpose and direction, and are guided by that purpose. If we want to do more than simply survive over the next decades, its important for us to create that clear sense of who we are and who God is calling us to be. If you are on Session or Deacons, or if youve ever served on Session or Deacons, or if you have an interest in the future of Firelands Church, please plan to join us on November 18, 2:00 5:30. Blessings, Jeanne
