Bradley Manning
protest scheduled
Pfc. Bradley Mannings defense will face
military prosecutors in Ft. George G. Meade
in Odenton, Md. from Nov. 27-Dec. 2 to
argue that all charges should be dismissed
because of unlawful pretrial punishment.
A protest rally is scheduled for Nov. 27.
Manning is a gay United States Army
soldier who was arrested in May 2010
in Iraq on suspicion of having passed
classied material to the whistleblower
website WikiLeaks. He was charged
with a number of offenses, including
communicating national defense
information to an unauthorized source
and aiding the enemy, a capital offense,
though prosecutors said they would not
seek the death penalty.
Protest organizers say this is one of the
defenses nal chances to reduce possible
sentencing, second in importance only
to the court martial, which begins next
Feb. 4. Its an opportunity for the public
to show the military and the media that
they still support Manning by coming out
to Fort Meade on Nov. 27 to protest what
organizers believe constitutes an injustice
in the military court.
The rally takes place outside the main
gate of Fort Meade at 10 a.m. to demand
that Mannings mistreatment be accounted
for. Speakers will include leading members
of the Bradley Manning Support Network
and partner organizations.
At the hearing, Bradleys lawyer David
Coombs will focus on the abuse Bradley
allegedly endured in Quantico, Va.
Manning was held for nine months in
solitary connement, in conditions that
were declared by U.N. Chief Rapporteur on
Torture Juan Mendez to be cruel, inhuman
and degrading. David Coombs will present
evidence that brig psychiatrists opposed
the decision to hold Bradley in solitary and
that brig commanders misled the public
when they said that Bradleys treatment was
for Prevention of Injury. Following the
protest, people are encouraged to stay for
some or all of the hearing.

Everyone has a stake in
striking a budget deal
The importance of a budget deal and
potential implications of not reaching
one are very real to many in the LGBT
community. Whether you own a business;
are receiving government assistance in
one form or another; are involved in the
theater; a healthcare non-prot; work
for a food bank; live with or care about
ghting HIV/AIDS at home or across the
world; or want to guarantee your civil and
human rights, you have a stake in the re-
sults of keeping the nation from falling off
the scal cliff.
The outcome of the negotiations be-
tween the president and Congress and
what the president is able to accomplish
in this lame duck session will set the stage
for what President Obama will be able to
do in his second term. The success he has
in reaching his goals in the budget ght
will portend what he will be able to do to
accomplish and move forward the issues
crucial to the coalition who helped elect
him, including women, Latinos, African
Americans and the LGBT community.
We all have things we want the presi-
dent to do. They include the LGBT com-
munity wanting him to take an active role
in passing an inclusive ENDA and sign-
ing an executive order banning discrimi-
nation in government contracting. The
Latino community wants him to ght for
a fair and far-reaching immigration bill
and women look to him to continue to
support their ability to control their own
healthcare and protect with Supreme
Court appointments Roe v. Wade. But as
history tells us the rst crucial battles of a
second term set the tone for the rest of it.
So while we want him to move on our
issues we rst need to join with a broad co-
alition to pressure Congress to accept that
this election really did make a difference
and was not the status-quo election some
would like to believe. We need to ght so
that any budget agreement ensures the
long-term viability of Medicare and Social
Security and that education and research
funding are protected and that programs
like Ryan White continue to exist and are
adequately funded. We need to maintain
the focus, however small it is, on arts fund-
ing where so many earn their living and we
need to protect funding to ght HIV/AIDS
across the world.
Supporting these programs doesnt
mean no compromise and we need to
accept that the president will have to
make some in order to protect funding
for those programs. We need to accept
that there has to be a concerted effort to
cut the debt but that must include added
revenue so we all have to put pressure on
Congress to support the president when
he asks the wealthy to pay a little more
and let them know our votes in 2014 will
reect that. As a coalition we are stronger
than the Tea Party and if some in Con-
gress are afraid to face them in an elec-
tion they should understand they have
to be more concerned with us. We need
to make Congress understand that those
who underestimated our strength in the
last election shouldnt do it again.
We need to demonstrate how wrong
Paul Ryan was when he blamed his
partys loss on a big urban vote as if
they didnt understand what they voted
for. That big urban vote will continue
to come out and vote against Ryan and
his policies because they oppose them
and if Republicans ever want a chance to
make inroads in that vote they will have to
change what they stand for. We need to
show Congress that it wasnt the gifts
as Mitt Romney calls them that lost him
the election but rather it was the policies
he espoused.
We need to join together and spend
the lame duck session ghting for a
shared goal the scal solvency of the
nation. That solvency must be reached
based on the terms under which President
Obama won the election. If obstructionists
in Congress dont want to lose many more
seats in 2014 they must understand they
have to compromise because we support
the president and his policies.
We need to go door-to-door, friend-
to-friend, and family member-to-family
member and ask them all to call their
congressperson and tell them we believe
that fairness is what this is about and that
the presidents plan for keeping us from
falling of the scal cliff is the right one.

Logan-U St. community
orist named top
industry enterprise
If discerning early in life the professional
aspiration that will become a life-long oc-
cupation is the truest predictor of a suc-
cessful entrepreneur, Jeff Fritz has much to
be grateful for this Thanksgiving holiday.
He also has a prestigious new award
to show for it.
Owner of the thriving Flowers on 14th
storefront northwest Washington busi-
ness, Fritz began working as a oral de-
signer at the age of 15 while a high school
student in nearby Westminster, Md. Op-
erating out of his childhood home after
class and on weekends, he quickly be-
came the oral wunderkind of the area.
Decades of delight in, and dedication
to, his chosen creative craft recently re-
sulted in his business earning the distinc-
tion of being named a Top 100 orist in
the world among more than 40,000 retail-
ers by industry leader FTD.
Eye-catching window displays dis-
tinguish the shops retail facade at 1712
14th Street, N.W., often prompting smiles
on passerby faces. Less than three blocks
south of the U Street neighborhood
namesake companion to Logan Circle in
one of the Districts most rapidly devel-
oping residential and commercial areas,
the business was not-so-long-ago a lone-
ly oasis in a dilapidated zone.
Following a career as a oral designer
in the employ of others, rst in his home
state and later in both Miami and D.C.,
Fritz opened his own business a few
doors up the street from his current lo-
cation in September 2001. He soon de-
veloped a large customer base within the
gay community, also relying on wedding
and special event orders, holiday whole-
sale contracting, and funeral and corpo-
rate accounts to round out revenue.
There werent many shoppers strolling
the now vibrant corridor in those early days.
Fondly recalling the eventual walk-in cus-
tomer passing through the doorway several
years later emblematic of the neighbor-
hood transition that would increasingly take
root Fritz references the framed currency
of that initial street-generated purchase. Re-
sponsive to increasing pedestrian trafc, the
window displays have become even more
elaborate, and enjoyed, over time.
Expanding to three times the space
when moving to its current 2,250 square-
foot location nearly three years ago, the
business has continued to grow. Ten em-
ployees and contractors assist in fullling
orders in the fragrant environ of a narrow
warehouse-loft-style open interior space.
Consistent with the freelance business
moniker Friendly Flowers of his youth,
the personable staff of Fritzs current op-
eration ensures many loyal customers.
Like most local entrepreneurs, Fritz is
quick to detail how difcult and discourag-
ing a place D.C. is to operate a small busi-
ness. He suggests that the absence of pri-
vate sector business ownership experience
among District elected ofcials is a primary
reason that local policies result in the citys
perennial rating as the nations most busi-
ness unfriendly jurisdiction.
A legacy contribution to a neighbor-
hoods revitalization while engendering
the affection of a community wilts the
operating hardships and burdens of a
blooming business.
This weekend, national Small Busi-
ness Saturday is an opportunity to cel-
ebrate local commerce and express ap-
preciation for the every-day dedication
and hard work of business operators like
Jeff Fritz.

FEEDBACK
The following was submitted as a letter to the editor.
Re: Will Obama name LGBT appoin-
tees in Cabinet shakeup? (news, Nov. 14)
In December 2012, I retired from the
federal government after 22 years. I was
not only able to utilize my professional
and educational expertise but also com-
fortable with peers and colleagues about
being a proud out lesbian in a relation-
ship than spanned more than 28 years
and the constant changing of presiden-
tial appointees.
Those personnel changes often af-
fected the potential opportunity for or
against the inclusion of programmatic ef-
forts to gather the data, qualitative and
quantitative, in identifying health dispari-
ties associated with LGBT populations
and different segments comprising the
diversity of the disparate but linked com-
munities. The bureaucratic changes ne-
cessitated the advocacy groups to re-cast
their message often duplicating previous
efforts while making the proper name
and date changes.
Readers are probably wondering:
What does this commentary have to
do with President Obamas selection of
LGBT individuals as possible Cabinet
leaders, etc.?
Federal government employees, re-
gardless of the length of our same-sex
relationships or even the faade of mar-
riage in those states where that right was
available, albeit it temporary, have few civil
rights relative to our married colleagues,
wherever the setting of that marriage.
I personally do not want John Berry to
leave his current position as director of the
Ofce of Personnel Management (OPM),
whose mission is recruiting, retaining and
honoring a world-class force to serve the
American people. If you look at OPMs
web site (opm.gov), you prominently see
Same-Sex Domestic Partner Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQs). On June 8, 2010,
my partner and I signed the federal
form entitled Declaration of Domestic
Partnership. Each federal agency sup-
posedly offered all employees the oppor-
tunity to complete this form, which would
be placed in the respective employees
personnel le. But you know something
isnt exactly right when the form has no
bureaucratic number assigned.
Three months after I retired, on March
3, 2012, my life partner, Ruth Boynton,
an almost 24-year veteran of the United
States Postal Service (USPS) died at age
54 of aortic dissection, Type III. Luckily,
a few of the government benets, most
notably the Federal Employee Group Life
Insurance (FEGLI) and the Thrift Savings
Plan, acknowledged me as the benecia-
ry. Not surprisingly, the USPS did not have
a process for declaring domestic partner-
ship and also claimed to have never re-
ceived forms from my partner identifying
me as her beneciary, a fact that few who
know us nd plausible.
And, of course, the pice de rsistance
was the $70,000+ county inheritance tax
that was sent to me, as the estate adminis-
trator, less than six months after her death.
Even the conservative members of my
family were appalled and used that knowl-
edge to vote for Question 6 in Maryland
and help win the approval of same-sex
couples to wed and have the other rights
associated with straight couples.
So, I want Berry to stay and nish the
job that he has started and accomplish
the mission of OPM in having the best
and brightest workforce regardless of any
demography.

Take time from busy
schedules to reect
By VALERIE M. BLAKE
I would thank you from the bottom
of my heart, but for you my heart has no
bottom. Anonymous
It seems to me that as a society we
have become so busy that we dont take
enough time to reect on the things in
our lives that give us joy. Our 9 to 5 jobs
have become 24/7. No longer do we
leave work and forget about a grueling
day. Now we have home ofces to per-
petuate it.
Rarely is anything spontaneous any-
more. We schedule play dates, music
lessons, soccer practice and other events
for our children. We schedule date night
with our romantic partners. Even our
pets have scheduled walks and playtime
at doggy daycare.
Our weekdays are littered with meet-
ings, phone calls, e-mails and deadlines.
Our weekends are lled to the brim with
sports, exercise, shopping, gardening
and completing tasks around the house.
Heck, even the weather these days is ex-
treme and overwhelming.
So as we celebrate Thanksgiving, I ask
you to take a breath and ponder for a
moment what you are thankful for.
Bob Hope was thankful for the memo-
ries, Maurice Chevalier for little girls. Sam
and Dave thanked you for lovin them like
you did. Bette White thanked Bea Ar-
thur and Rue McClanahan for being her
friends and the late John Denver was just
thankful to be a country boy.
Heres my list.
Im thankful for customers, thankful
for friends and I hope that my list of both
types never ends. For buyers who trust
and will listen to me and sellers who watch
lots of HGTV. For title attorneys and those
who will lend the funds that my clients are
anxious to spend. For carpenters, plumb-
ers and others in trades, landscapers and
stagers and those Merry Maids.
Im thankful for soldiers at home and
abroad; for those brave men and wom-
en we all should applaud. For Army and
Navy, for Air Force, Marines who suit up
in uniform still in their teens. For the JAG
Corps and generals and powers that be
who no longer ask if theyre LGBT.
Ive got both my eyes and my ears, all
my toes, two arms and two legs and a cute,
button nose. I can hear, I can see, I can
taste, I can smelleven touching is some-
thing I do rather well. Im thankful Im ag-
ing, dont mind that Im wrinkling; Ive most
of my teeth and my eyes are still twinkling.
Im thankful for sump pumps and
wet vacs were dandy as neighbors and
I weathered Hurricane Sandy. When my
boiler turns on with a regular beat, Im
thankful this winter that I will have heat;
that Sprint nally ne-tuned my cellular
tower, that during the last storm I never
lost power.
Im thankful our countrys election is
through, the debates are all over and TV
spots too. Maybe now we can rally and
compromise if we dont all take a fall off
the nancial cliff.
Im thankful for white wine and for Diet
Coke and my doctor is pleased I no longer
smoke. Im thankful for ice cream, for piz-
za with cheese and for gaining those few
extra pounds with such ease, for although
the economy may seem unstable, I still
earn enough to put food on the table.
Im thankful for love and Im thankful
for laughter, if just for a short time or for-
ever after. For my canine companions,
my small, furry family: Olivia, Fulbright
and the noisiest, Stanley, who always do
things that will prompt me to smile as I
revel in kisses and snuggle a while.
