A LETTER FROM KATE

Only half tongue-in-cheek, weve named our inspiration for Spring 13 Shapeshifter. Water, the ultimate shapeshifter, provided inspiration for our print and pattern design. Water takes many forms, and its adaptability and fluidity provide a wonderful metaphor for a full life, well lived. But only one aspect of Shapeshifter refers to form. Its more important quality implies versatility and the ability to move effortlessly through different environments. Weve created styles that morph to suit a life lived both outdoors and in, that work and play, that handle the city with confidence but love the beach, the mountains and most of all, to travel. I admit to being profoundly under the influence of an Italian vacation when we embarked on designing this season. When your clothes fit into a single bag and favor function and an imperfect, comfortable beauty, they complete the experience. There is no resistance to this pure and simple pleasure. Bravissima.

DOING GOOD
United by Blue (UBB) is an ocean friendly apparel and accessory company dedicated to ocean conservation. For every product sold, UBB removes one pound of trash from our worlds oceans and waterways. This season weve collaborated with them on a line of organic cotton graphic tees that are a mash up of the vibe and spirit of both companies. United By Blues cleanup crew is constantly traveling across the country doing beach and waterway cleanups to fulfill their environmental mission. Stores that carry UBB Collab tees are encouraged to get involved in these cleanup efforts by co-hosting a cleanup of their own. If you have a nearby waterway or beach that could use a good cleaning, let us know and well see if a UBB event can be scheduled with your store. DESIGN STORY: LONG ISLAND DRESS

Already a favorite around the Horny Toad office, this dress is made from our all-star jersey knit Samba fabric. Samba features the beauty and performance of eco-friendly Tencel along with feel-good organic cotton, stretchy spandex and a slightly slubbed texture. Thanks to its elegant, lean lines and wide, ruched waistband, the Long Island looks good on pretty much every woman who wears it and gracefully transitions from city to beach without missing a beat. Featuring an interior shelf bra, adjustable straps and handy zipper stash pocket in the waistband.

FIBER STORY: TENCEL

Tencel is durable, low-maintenance and drapes luxuriously. It has an extremely soft and pleasant hand that feels great against the skin. Its moisture-wicking performance qualities are similar to treated polyester, which makes it a good candidate for both athletic and street-wear. Tencels functionality is a result of fine, water-loving fibers that that quickly absorb and transport moisture away from the skin. The solvent in its closed-loop production cycle gets recycled by 99.7%.

PERFORMANCE STORY
Upwell: 96% nylon/4% spandex Sturdy nylon, flexi spandex, slightly puckered texture, lightening fast dry time, DWR (durable water repellent) finish and cool horizontal space dyed yarns sum up Upwells attributes. Feather light, it suits a life that alternates between wet and dry, outdoors and around town. OnRush Knit : 85% drirelease Repreve recycled polyester / 15% organic cotton OnRush Knit can do all the hard work of shiny, slick, slightly stinky, treated synthetic with none of the downside. A patented blend of recycled poly and organic cotton wicks moisture, dries in a flash and neutralizes orders. Drirelease performance is embedded in the yarn structure so its permanent and wont let you down ever. Visually it meets the gold standard of t-shirt fabrics: soft, supple and cottony like a favorite. Swifty Knit: 83% drirelease Repreve recycled polyester/11% Tencel/ 6% spandex Swifty Knit is gorgeous but takes care of business with an impressive set of skills. The unique drirelease blend of recycled polyester and Tencel wicks moisture, dries in a flash and neutralizes odors. Swiftys performance technology is embedded in the yarn structure so its permanent, but it also has irresistible softness, slinky drape and enough spandex for stealthy flexibility.

Seahorse Dress

FABRIC STORY: SKINNY DIP

52% polyester/43% Tencel/5% spandex

Actively disposed, Skinnydip is a soft and silky jersey-knit worthy of sundresses and swim coverups. It doesnt mind getting wet and dries so easily and travels with such ease that any mermaid would be satisfied. Earthy, ecolovely Tencel compliments practical poly; spandex adds just the right amount of body-loving stretch.
