CHARLOTTEA local organization to promote human trafficking awareness and provide help for victims will have its launch party Thursday morning. Stop Human Exploitation, or SHE for short, was founded by three trafficking victims and two locals after the massage parlor on Main Street was revealed to be a cover up for a sex trafficking industry in September. Spokeswoman Lauren Wilson spoke to the press about how the members of SHE found each other. One of my friends from college, Khristian Curry, was sex trafficked when she was young, Wilson said. Curry was a founding member of SHE. I called her after I heard the news about the parlor and we started throwing ideas around about starting an awareness group. Eventually we found everyone and it became SHE, Wilson added. SHE is focused on assisting local victims by providing mediums to restart their lives such as job opportunities, discounted health appointments, and temporary housing. After the members realized that they did not yet have the power to put an end to trafficking, they decided to stop the cyclical nature. Many survivors

return to trafficking after escaping because of a lack of money, shelter, and food. SHE also hopes to educate the public on how common trafficking is. It wants parents to realize that any child can be a victim if precautions arent taken. Most people dont realize how many trafficking industries exist in the U.S. They are so well-hidden that they just go by unnoticed, Wilson said. Between 14,500 and 17,500 people are trafficked in the U.S. alone according to 2005 Trafficking In Persons Report released by the U.S. Department of State annually. The more people know about trafficking, the more will realize how crucial it is to provide any help they can, Wilson said. Right now we need volunteers, funds, and any assistance we can receive to get SHE fully up and running. We strongly think that it is our duty as part of this community to help the victims, she added. The launch party will be Thursday morning at 8 a.m. at Dey Hall on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. All are encouraged to attend.
