Reflective Paper At the begging of this class I expected to come in and read Shakespeare and study how adjectives

and adverbs were used properly in writing. However, I learned quickly that we were not going to be doing anything close to what I thought we would be doing. We started going into how literacy has affected us and what has affected our view on literacy, I often thought it was a psychologically class some days. We were asked to describe our life in little narratives and not big narratives. Coming in to this class thought good writing was how well you used grammar and how well you spelled but this class has drastically changed that view. I have realized that good writing is based on what the reader thinks. A childs book made seem amazing to a child and the parent think that the writer was a bad writer, just like someone who does not believe in fiction would not like Harry Potter where as a lot of other people think that is great writing. I have learned that good writing is all about your perspective of what you like to read about. The choices I made throughout this course affected my work drastically, if I forgot about an assignment till the day it was due than it was not going to be anywhere close to my best work, however if I planned and worked diligently on an assignment than it could have potential to be great. Choices such as doing research and practicing writing definitely improved my writing skills but they would only improve by how much effort I put in to trying to improve them. All the drafts and pre planning that we had to do also helped my writing by getting my thoughts out and on to paper so I would

not forget them and also helped me get started early so I would not be rushed when the dead line was close. The activities that affected me the most were probably the journals that we did, you would give us a prompt and we had to respond but you made us think out why we chose that response. It made me realize why I made some of the choices that I did and how those choices affected me. For example, journal number five made me realize that a formal paper is not always the best way to try to get a point across to someone. Sometimes you have to think outside the box and take an approach that will capture their attention. Throughout this semester I have grown as a writer even though I have not noticed it happening. My structure of how I for my papers and paragraphs have improved because I started trying to fix how they were set up, where as before I did not realize that my structure was bad. Assignments that were difficult for me to complete were when we had to do literacy narratives and answer why the events we were talking about affected us. This was difficult because no teacher had ever asked me to think about that and I had never thought to give it thought on my own. My view on literacy has changed somewhat, I still do not like writing but this class has made me realize why I do not like writing, however this class has also made me realize that even though I do not like writing it is very important to society and to be literate is very important in this day and age.
