Tim Coen November 1, 2012 WR 13300 Dietel-McLaughlin Annotated Bibliography Hip-hop and rap music are certainly my favorite

genres of music, as it is one of the favorite genres of todays youth. But outside of todays youth (those outside the range of ages 15-25), rap music is very controversial, and many are offended by some of the explicit material and language incorporated into the lyrics of rap music. When observing hip-hop and rap as whole, the critics have a point: hip-hop artists definitely do not hold their tongues. But if hip-hop does contain so much explicit material, why is it such a popular, mainstream genre? What makes hip-hop and rap a legitimate genre? What specifically makes rap music appealing to youth and distasteful to others? The focus of this research paper is to explain the extreme success and popularity of hip-hop and rap in todays culture, as well as to prove to critics that hip-hop and rap deserve the same recognition and respect that other music genres receive. Quinn, Eithne. Nuthin' but a "g" Thang. New York: Columbia UP, 2005. Print. The content of this book explains how gang activity and association has influenced the hip-hop and rap genre. The book speaks to those who have interest in hip-hop, telling how hip-hop has evolved into "thug" music. With a main focus on specific artists, Quinn conveys the rap evolution by example of the careers of certain artists. This book will help my research by establishing a specific social group that hip-hop targets, as well as provide reasoning for the distinguishing characteristics of hip-hop.
