OVERVIEW:

Flexsim Ports is a PC-based simulation software tool designed to model, simulate, and analyze container terminal operations. Flexsim Ports primary task is to optimize the flow and throughput of containers at less cost.

MODEL-BUILDING LIBRARY OF OBJECTS: Detailed container-terminal models are easily created using Flexsim Ports
drag and drop model-building objects.

Complex systems, like container terminals, require computer-based tools to study and improve operations. While spreadsheets and execution systems perform many complex calculations, their use of average numbers to represent ship arrival, load, unload, and travel times, space within the yard, and resource availability do not allow them to account for the reality of randomness and interdependence, which are characteristics that distinguish port and terminal operations. Flexsim Ports, however, does allow randomness and interdependence when studying a ports operations. For example, Flexsim Ports end-user can determine the optimal capacity of a terminal, balance labor and equipment requirements, manage bottlenecks, justify capital expenditures, improve container picking systems and schedules, and maximize the use and turnover of yard space.

APPLICATIONS:

The primary benefit for using Flexsim Ports is to find ways of moving more containers more efficiently and at less cost. The power and beauty of Flexsim Ports is that ideas for improving a process can be simulated, tested, and justified prior to implementing them in the actual system. The results of each simulation can be analyzed graphically through 3D animation, and through statistical reports and graphs, which are both excellent for communicating a model's purpose and results to technical and nontechnical audiences. Using Flexsim Ports to study a process, end-users can confidently communicate their assumptions, findings, conclusions, and future actions to colleagues, bosses, or clients about how to improve container flow specifically and terminal operations generally. In addition to moving more containers more efficiently and at lower cost, organizations and individuals using simulation gain a greater insight into the system being studied, which in-turn helps managers to predict and control a terminals operations with greater reliability in the future.

BENEFITS:

HISTORY & SERVICES:

Flexsim has developed simulation software since 1993. In 2005, Flexsim created a steering committee of its clients within the container-shipping-port industry to develop a simulator specifically tailored to model container flow and port operations for the express purpose of optimizing the throughput of containers. The result is Flexsim Ports. Flexsim provides simulation software, software training, technical support, simulation model-building and project services.
