A study from the U.S. Food and Drug Administrations Center for Veterinary Medicine found that 22 percent of dog owners and 15 percent of cat owners described their pets as being normal weight, when they were actually overweight or obese. Whats a little extra weight for your pet? A lot more than it is for you: * Just two pounds of extra weight on a Chihuahua would be equivalent to more than 60 additional pounds on an adult human. * Even just four pounds too many on a 10-pound Siamese cat would be equivalent to almost 40 extra pounds on a human. problems. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention estimates that 88.4 (Family Features) million U.S. dogs and Obesity and being cats - 54 per-cent overweight are huare overweight or man health problems obese. And that can that get a lot of lead to health attention from docproblems such as tors and the media. arthritis, diabetes, What hasnt gotten heart disease and as much attention is even some cancers. the fact that many Many pet owners pets are suffering arent aware that from the very same their pets are overRetail Lot Tips: 1. If you are selecting a tree at night, make sure the lot is well-lit. 2. Ask how fresh the trees are; were they all delivered once at the beginning of the season or does the retailer get fresh cut trees each week. Fresher cut trees will last longer. 3. Test the fir trees by taking a needle and sharply bending it, it should snap crisply like a fresh carrot. Pine however has a different indicator because they are more fibrous than firs. A pine needle should NOT break; unless they are overly dry. Avoid these! 4. If you are strong enough, do the stump test, grab the center truck and lift the tree a few inches and allow it to thump on the ground. If a large amount of needles fall off, the tree is either older than you want or dried out, pass that one by. If you arent strong enough to lift the tree for a stump test, place your hand at the base of a branch (where it meets the trunk) and slowly pull your hand up the branch and see how many needles fall off. Also, make sure there isnt discolored foliage or a musty odor. If none of the trees on the lot look fresh, go somewhere else. Cut Your Own at a Tree Farm Tips: Remember, the Christmas trees purchased from local Christmas tree farms are as fresh as a Christmas tree can get. Dress for the weather, wear boots, mittens, gloves (for the person cutting or holding the tree) or warm clothing if it is cold. It might take longer than you think to make that critical decision. If Rover comes, please dont let him mark other peoples trees. Saws are needed to cut your own tree. Check ahead of time to see if they are provided. Ask about pricing before you cut, some farms sell by the tree, others sell by the foot. Be careful when tromping through the trees. Snow may cover up holes from trees that were dug up and sometimes stumps are left standing well above the ground, creating a trip hazard. Nothing takes the fun out of selecting your tree faster
HOW TO SELECT THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE By: Colleen Cavagna, Cornell Cooperative Extension Community Educator We are in the Christmas season and a great holiday tradition is picking out the best tree for your home. Let me give you some tips on what to look for when either buying from a retail lot or going to a cut-your-own tree farm. Both Retail and Cut-Your-Own Tips: Whether you are buying from a retail lot or cutting your own tree, there are a few things you should do before getting everyone into the car. 1. Measure the ceiling height of your room in which the tree will be displayed. Remember, when you are outside the tree will look small against the sky as a backdrop. Dont buy a 12 tree for an 8 room unless you plan on trimming it; use the pruned branches as decorations (garland or wreathes). 2. It isnt just the height of the room you need to measure but also the width where the tree will be displayed. Most trees are trimmed at an 80% taper which means a 10 tall tree will be 8 wide at the base. You dont want people to have to brush by the tree, knocking off ornaments or tinsel. 3. What decorating theme are you using? What style of tree do you like? Some species have more open foliage, stiffer branches or longer needles. White pines have a beautiful form, however they dont hold up heavy ornaments well. They are used in garland and wreaths due to their long needles. Frasier fir has a nice triangular shape, holds its needles well and has a pleasing aroma. Douglas fir is a very popular tree with very full branches. The Noble fir has stiff branches, good for heavy ornaments, garland or decorations. Concolor fir branches look less sharp than other firs and hold its needles well. Most Spruces have poor needle retention; however the Blue Spruce has good needle retention and that blue-green color some adore.
than getting a boot full of freezing water after stepping in a hidden hole. Select trees with straight trunks. Keep in mind that pines will usually have, at least, some crook in their trunks. You may have to trim off bottom branches later to accommodate your stand. See if the farm provides a shaking or blowing service to shake out the oldest needles, providing you with a perfectly clean tree to start the season. Cutting the tree is a two person job; the cutter lies on the ground to cut at the base of the tree while another person holds the bottom of the limbs up. The person that is holding the tree should tug lightly on the tree so the cutters saw doesnt bind or fall on them. Bring the tree back to the processing area to be measured (if sold by the foot), cleaned and netted. Netting makes transport easier and getting the tree into the house is a breeze when it is netted. Many people question whether they should buy a fake tree or get a real one. The National Christmas Tree Association has this to say, It is much better environmentally to use a natural agricultural crop and recycle it after the holidays. Real Christmas Trees are a renewable, recyclable, natural product grown on farms throughout North America. Unfortunately many people have the misconception that Christmas Trees are cut down from the forest. Real Christmas Trees are grown as crops, just like corn or wheat, and raised on a farm. Once they are harvested, new seedlings are planted to replace harvested trees. These would NOT have been planted if trees hadnt been harvested the previous year. Fake Christmas Trees however are a non-renew able, non-biodegradable, plastic and metal product most often made inoverseas factories. Make getting your Christmas tree a family event and a tradition you can continue throughout the years. Have a great Christmas Season! fb AUDITED... MAILED... EFFECTIVE... Moneysaver ads work for you!

MCKEAN 4-H CLUBS The Smethport 4-H Robotics Club held its first meeting in the Hamlin Memorial Library Conference Room. 15 youth, aged 7-12, attended. Ann Dunkerton, Penn State Extension Educator for 4-H and Youth Development, led the meeting, which began with pledges to the American and 4-H flags. Some of the youth were new to 4-H, so a sample agenda was followed to introduce them to the program. The club will be using the 4H curriculum, Junk Drawer Robotics, to learn to think like scientists and do the work of engineers. The task for this first meeting was to sort Legos according to criteria established by small groups. Some sorted by form (color or size), while others chose function (wheels, type of vehicle, etc). The meeting ended with a relay game using robot claws to transport various sized balls from one end of the room to the other. The club plans to meet the first Thursday of the month; at the next meeting (January 3), the members will hold club officer elections. The project topic will be robotic hands. McKean 4-H Clubs are part of Penn State Extensions youth development programming. Traditional clubs are open to all youth ages 8-18 (as of January 1, 2013) with Cloverbuds aged 5-7. Screened adult volunteers are also needed to contribute their experience, talent, and time through club participation and leadership. Penn State Extension encourages persons with disabilities to participate in its programs and activities. If you anticipate needing any type of accommodation or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact the McKean County Extension Office in advance of your participation. Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity, and the diversity of its workforce. fb

Commissioners will hold its final public working group meeting of 2012 on Monday, Dec. 17. The meeting, which will begin at 8 a.m., will be held in the auditorium of the Game Commissions Harrisburg headquarters, 2001 Elmerton Avenue, just off the Progress Avenue exit of Interstate 81. The working group meeting will be webcast through the agencys web site (www.pgc.state.pa.us) beginning at 8 a.m. Since opening our Working Group meetings to the public, the Board has received an enormous amount of positive feedback from hunters around the state, said Game Commissioner Ralph Martone, Board President. Through the Working Group meetings and the rebroadcast on the Game Commission web site, hunters are learning more about the issues surrounding Board decisions. Observers are often amazed at the depth of information provided to the Board during the briefing by staff, as well as the exchange of questions and answers between Commissioners and staff. Martone encouraged the public to use the time between the working group meeting on Dec. 17 and the Boards first quarterly meeting of 2013, which will be held on Jan. 27-29, to express their opinions. Public comment periods are scheduled at each of the Boards quarterly meetings, during which the Board votes on proposed regulations and other action items. The Board also accepts public comments through e-mail and letters. She reminds me of my grandfather in his later years. If he was 86 years old, he would say, Im in my 87th year. Both my niece and my grandfather celebrated their birthdays by looking forward, excited not just by the day itself, but by the prospects of celebrating life in all of its goodness the entire year. Now contrast that attitude with the one you get from a lot of people around their birthday. Some people I know dont want anyone to acknowledge their birthday much less celebrate it. They are offended by cards, cakes, and gifts. Others get depressed. Every day of life is a gift. Celebrate each day regardless of when your birthday is as you listen to life and make a positive life. FUN IN A BACKYARD GREENHOUSE By: Chester S. Galle, Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener December is here and before you know it, the seed catalogs will arrive. For me, that usually happens around January 1. In the past, I had to remind myself that the main planting of the garden couldnt happen until late May or early June. But, if I had a greenhouse, well, maybe I could plant as early as March for some cold season crops. I have been gardening since I was eight years old. When I was in high school, I had a greenhouse that was built as an add-on to our cellar. I spent hours enjoying my greenhouse. Not until I was 70 years old, however, did I think about actually getting a greenhouse for myself. I saw an ad for a 6 x 8 greenhouse for around $300.00. I thought: I can do that! Two of my Master Gardener friends helped me put it together. It was mid-winter - snow on the ground, windy and cold - but that spring my greenhouse contained hundreds of seedlings. So, why do I tell you this story? I do it so that you might talk yourself into a little greenhouse like the one I purchased. With a small, unheated greenhouse, you can start your planting early and extend it much later than the first killing frost. Even without adding a source of heat, I was able to extend the tomato growing season by two weeks. And the broccoli and lettuce were still going after that. Mmmm...fresh lettuce every day for that lunch-time sandwich. I decided to use passive solar heat in my greenhouse, which is a way of capturing the suns heat during the day and releasing it during the cooler night temperatures. A 30-gallon plastic garbage can was placed in the greenhouse and filled with water. During the day, when the greenhouse temperature was 75-80 degrees, the water absorbed the heat. In addition, I built a raised bed inside the greenhouse out of red bricks which also absorbed the heat. Next year, I may add some electric heat using a temporary electric heater. It is also possible to build your own greenhouse. Evan and Lauren, two Alfred University students, are doing so in my garden area this year. If all goes well, they will present a slide show on How to Build Your Own Greenhouse. Another option is to build (or buy in a kit) a small hoop house made with plastic pipe and covered with clear plastic. The October/ November, 2011, issue of Mother Earth News magazine contains a good article on this subject. You can find the article on line at www.MotherEarthNews. Put hoop houses for greenhouses in the search spot and click on the article entitled Build an Easy Hoop House to Grow More Food. In conclusion, here it is the beginning of December and the broccoli in the greenhouse is growing as if it were early spring.
PAGE 6
Im sure it would appreciate longer day-length, but it seems to be doing just fine. Next year, I plan to grow carrots in the greenhouse so I can harvest some all through December and have fresh, tasty, sweet carrots to munch on. I hope you will be tempted to consider building a mini-greenhouse over one of your raised beds. If you are an avid gardener like I am, youll enjoy every minute of it. fb TWIN TIER CHRISTIAN RIDERS MEETING Local Chapter of Christian Motorcyclists Association- 2nd Saturday of the month, 9am at Foxs Pizza, Eldred, Pa. GAME COMMISSION URGES PARTICIPATION IN CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT Harrisburg- Pennsylvania Game Commission officials are urging wildlife enthusiasts to join the tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the United States in the Audubon Societys 114th Annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), which will take place Dec. 14 through Jan. 5. Bird enthusiasts, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists, will head out on an annual mission - often before dawn - to make a difference and to see nature firsthand, said Dan Brauning, Game Commission Wildlife Diversity Division chief. Each year, volunteers brave snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count, and they have made enormous contributions to bird conservation continent-wide while doing so. The data collected through this effort - which is the longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations - allows researchers, conservation biologists, and other interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. When combined with other surveys, such as the Breeding Bird Survey, it provides a picture of how the continents bird populations have changed in time and space over the past hundred years. Local counts will occur on one day between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5. Volunteers can pick the most convenient circle, or participate in more than one count. There is a specific methodology to the CBC, but everyone can participate. The
count takes place within Count Circles, which focus on specific geographical areas. Each circle is led by a Count Compiler, who is an experienced birdwatcher, enabling beginning birders to learn while they assist. Also, those who live within the boundaries of a Count Circle can even stay at home and report the birds that visit their backyard feeders, or join a group of birdwatchers in a local field. In either case, if you have never been on a CBC before, your first step is to locate and contact your local Count Compiler on Audubons web site to find out how you can volunteer, Brauning said. Audubons web site is www.audubon.org/Bird/cbc Brauning also noted that there are two changes to the CBC that participants should know about. First, the CBC is now a free program. Audubon will no longer charge the $5 fee of field participants. Second, to minimize the effects of the loss of fee income for Audubon, American Birds will no longer be printed on paper and mailed to participants, and Audubon will move to an online delivery of the summary results of the CBC. Brauning noted that the CBC makes an indispensible contribution to conservation because it monitors bird species that spend winters in Pennsylvania. Some of these species are much easier to count or monitor in winter because their breeding ground is so far north in areas where there are few people or roads to give access to habitat, Brauning said. An example of this is the rusty

blackbird that migrates from the boreal taiga forests of Canada and Alaska to the southeastern United States in winter. Pennsylvania is on the northern edge of its winter range, and some CBCs do count this declining wetland songbird. Hawks also are more easily counted in winter and our state is a good place to see several hawk species in winter, including red-tailed hawks and rough-legged hawks. Brauning also noted that the CBC is a good way to introduce beginners to bird identification. It is much easier to find birds through your binoculars when there are few leaves on the trees to hide them from view. There are fewer bird species around in winter than at other times of year, so it is easier to learn bird species identification, Brauning said. Also, birds are easier to spot because the trees lack the leaves that hide birds from your eyes in spring and summer. In fact, many birders got started in this hobby in winter in a car with more experienced birders on a Christmas count. CBC allows for mentoring in the field. For best results, spend some time scouting your area. Rather than spending a day in the car, get out and walk the back roads and land where you have permission to go birding. A wide variety of birds are observed in winter counts including an assortment of songbirds and our upland game birds, which are mostly residents. It is a challenge, for instance, to find a ruffed grouse on a CBC in many circles. Just A Special
from Keith & Alona Wedge and Patches, Bo Jango want to thank Amherst Alarm and to the quick response of the Bolivar Fire Department. And a very special thank you to a first responder Brian Hempill. On Wednesday, November 21st when our house caught fire from a furnace the response and very daring action of Brian Hemphill as the first on the scene entered the house and got the fire knocked down with one small fire extinguisher that I had in the garage, before the first truck came on the scene, his actions saved us from a total loss. In a few weeks we will be back in the house. On Thanksgiving Day we sure had plenty to be thankful for. Also a big thank you to a lot of friends, family, customers and business associates. We may have Christmas in January but we are very thankful. I guess life is what happens while you are making all the other plans.
Thank You
Over 40 years ago my father started our farm and now I work it with my two sons. I pay them a reasonable compensation package and handle the managerial decisions myself. I thought everything was fine until I learned my sons were planning on leaving the farm. I didnt know what to do until my wife read about FarmNet and suggested we call.
Consultants came to our farm and met with everyone individually before getting us together as a team. Ill be honest - we worked through a lot of difficult issues. Now, we have regular meetings and are in the process of developing a transfer plan and new business structure to allow our sons to build equity. This was all done at no cost to us. Thanks FarmNet!
