I Do Today we are going to be learning about symbolism. Q: Why is it important to understand symbolism? Ex A: There are more ways to say something than by just using words Ex A: Sometimes authors try to tell readers something through a symbol instead of saying it. Teacher will put up chart and read chart as students write notes.

A symbol is a person, place, or object that stands for something beyond itself. Symbolism allows people to communicate beyond the limits of language. Authors use symbolism when they want to give more meaning and feeling to their story without directly pointing it out. Common Symbols: Black=Death Red=Blood, Danger Blue=Calm Rose=Romance Butterfly= New Beginning
(4 minutes) To get students interested in symbolism: 1.Teacher will ask students if anyone has read or seen Harry Potter, and tell students that there are many examples of symbolism in this novel/movie. Teacher will have students pass out Harry Potter handout. 2. Teacher will ask student to read the background information Harry Potter by JK Rowling centers around a school (Hogwarts) for witchcraft and wizardry. When the students first arrive at the school they are sorted into one of five houses. The student is sorted based upon their personality and characteristics. 3. Teacher will tell students that each table will be investigating the symbolism behind each house, and then creating their own table symbol. We Do 1. Students will work with tables to answer questions about the symbolism of each house. Teacher will circulate and monitor group work/ask questions. (5 minutes)

(5 minutes) 3. Quickly run through each table and ask what each symbol is. Put papers in center of table to be collected later. 4. If time, show student Sorting Hat song which describes the characteristics of each house. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLRlff-JomY I Do Teacher will tell students that we will now be looking at the symbolism in The Scarlet Ibis Students will take out their story while teacher passes out symbolism worksheet. I Do you will be looking at the main symbol in the story: The Ibis. We have decided that the ibis symbolizes Doodle. You will need to chart their similarities: these can be physical characteristics or symbolic things. After you chart this information, you need to describe in a few sentences how you know the ibis symbolizes Doodle. You Do Students will work with a partner to complete chart describing how Iris is symbolizing Doodle. Teacher will check in with students every 5 minutes.

Suddenly, Sams bright yellow phone began to ring, and he answered with a confused, Hello? He had not been expecting a call. As he listened to the voice on the other end, a smile began to form on his face. It was great talking to you! he said joyfully. As he hung up the phone, a butterfly flew past his window.
