Bringing Outreach into the Engineering Classroom: A Heat and Mass Transfer Class Project

Project Description This project is part of course evaluation for BMCT 3143- Heat and Mass Transfer course that contribute 20 % from the total marks. Based on the topics that have been covered in Heat and Mass Transfer module, in a groups of five, you are about to design an original experiment that would be suitable for a high school teacher to use in introducing a mass or heat transfer principle/ concept to students in his/her class. Groups were asked to design their experiment such that it can serve to attract high school students to Mechanical Engineering. Experimental design was subject to the following constraints:(i) (ii) (iii) Experiment must be feasible Materials/ setup cost for the experiment must not exceed RM30 and; Designed experiment must be easily set up in a high school classroom.

Each group presented an in-class demonstration (demo) of their experiment at week 14 of the semester to a diverse audience students and teachers from the School X. At the same time prepare a report that describes the constructions, theory, description of the experiment and any other information that related with your project. The report is expected to contain a maximum of 10 pages (not include the front page of the report). Detail about the report is mentioned below: Format 1) Font size: 12 2) Font style: Times New Roman 3) Line spacing: Single Spacing (A) The content of the short report should consist of: 1) Front Page: The cover/title page includes the title of your project, the names of all team members, and the date the report was finalized.

2) Table of Contents : The table of contents includes a list of the various sections of your report and provides the page number on which each section starts. 3) Abstract : Provide a concise description of your project design, motivation for the design, and a discussion of the usefulness or effective. 4) Introduction: Provide context and define the project that is being built, or problem that was solved within the project. Discuss any prerequisites or assumption for the design that should be known to understand the context in which the design was built. 5) Technical Discussion and Details: Presents the design itself and all details relevant to implementing the design. This section provides a detailed technical description of the entire design including hardware design, software design, assembly instructions, testing procedures, etc. A) Design Details: 1. It is strongly suggested to provide an overview of the design identifying major subcomponent, discuss how those subcomponents are connected together, and subsequently provide detailed description of the each subcomponent 2. You should include figures for block diagrams, flow charts, etc. B) Design Verification and Testing 1. Describe the testing procedures undertaken to verify the design functionality and effectiveness C) Discussion of Problems Encountered 1. Detailed discussion of any problems encountered during the implementation of your design 2. Discussions of solutions utilized to overcome and solve these problems 6) Conclusion: Provides a brief summary of your design experiment and evaluates how well your design experiment achieved the proposed design goals/requirements. If the design goals were not met, provides some analysis and discussion as to why. 7) Appendices: The appendices of the project report should be to include detailed information that is too large to include directly within the proposal text. Each appendix should be referenced within the report itself where appropriate. The following provide the required appendices for your project report. Additionally appendices can be included if needed.

Complete Parts Lists: Your designs should be accompanied by a complete parts list with part numbers Software Listing: You must include a listing of any software program developed for each project. Project Proposal: Your project proposal should be included as an appendix in your report. Important Date: 1) Before 25th October 2012: Submit a copy of your project report 2) 10th December 2012 : Project Presentation 3) 14h December 2012: Project Submission
