Power Distribution Transformers

Transformers are electrical equipments that are used in order to stop DC electrical power to pass through one side to the other and to alter the current of an input alternating current (AC). They are utilizing electrical wire coiled around a core to transfer an AC signal into transient electromagnetic fields. The fields run through the input windings through the core. When the fields attain the output windings, they will be converted into output AC signal. These equipments are present in vast applications. Distribution transformers are used in lower voltage distribution networks. They are available in (11kV, 6.6 kV, 3.3 kV, 440V, 230V) are basically lower than 200 MVA. They are used for the distribution of electrical energy at less than 33 KV that is at very low voltage level for industrial application and as low as 44V to 220 V for domestic purpose. They are small in terms of size, easy to install, works at efficiency level of 50 to 70%, have low magnetic losses and are not always fully loaded. These devices are used at distribution level where voltages are very low. The secondary voltage is the one that is used by the consumer. Since there is voltage drop limitation, it is impossible to bring the second voltage to distant locations. Generally, all power coming from power plant goes through this transformer before they are fully utilized in households. They are useful in every arena of the economy including residential, commercial and industrial and serve vast applications in order to power up various home devices, motors and appliances. These transformers are used to meet the demands of specific requirement of the consumers. They are used for installation in the military, series of highway and street lighting, perimeter and institutional lighting. Power Distribution Transformers are utilized in the diffusion network of high voltage for applications including step-up or step-down (400 kV, 200 kV, 110 kV, 66 kV, 33kV) and are generally graded as 200 MVA.These transformers are used for transmitting heavy load of voltage that is more than 33 KV. Compared to distribution transformer, they are larger in size and are used in transmission substation and generating station. Industrial Transformers are used in transmission network in order to supply power to the households and commercial areas and so that surges and fluctuations are lesser. They are step up devices so that the iron and copper losses can be minimized. They are designed to use the core to the fullest.

There are various types of transformers that are used for different applications including isolation, special purpose, distribution, constant voltage transformer and three phase transformer. They are used widely in

huge demands for industries such as battery chargers, communications, medical application, power supplies, laboratory equipments, electronic testing, computers and more.
