PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
With the passage of Prop 30, I want to pass on some thoughts regarding the Proposition from GUSD Superintendent, Dr. Robert Voors. Please see how it effects our schools, below.

DECEMBER 2012

BARNES & NOBLE GLENDORA FAMILY WEEK

In November, FGUS and Barnes & Noble teamed up for the first time to host Glendora Family Week. Held in the Glendora store, a percentage of sales for the week of Nov. 814 were donated to FGUS. Thanks to the support of the Glendora community, a donation of just over $4,200 was made to FGUS on behalf of Barnes & Noble.

Thank you, MIKE BECKMAN PRESIDENT, FGUS

PROP 30 QUICK FAC TS

With all of the vote tallied, Prop 30 passed, 54% to 46% The initiative is expected to raise nearly $5-$7 billion/year for education to maintain status quo Revenue raised this year goes toward paying off state deferrals California districts wont actually see the money until the end of June (2013) School district funding for this year (2012-2013) will be flat (the same as last year)

PROPOSITION 30 PASSES
On November 6th, voters in California passed Proposition 30, which mandates a cent sales tax increase for four years, and an income tax increase of up to 10% for those making more than $250,000 per year for seven years. The passage of Prop 30 does not add money to

Various events were held throughout the week, including fingerprinting for children, authors Bryan Clay and Erin Fry signing and reading from their books, and an appearance by Jyll Everman, Next Food Network Star. Teachers and staff also participated through story times and working at the Starbucks Cafe in the store. It is anticipated that this will become an annual event held in the late fall. Watch for it next year! Thank you, Barnes & Noble!

education funding; it replaces severe trigger cuts that were imminent. Thus, while the passage of Prop 30 is a positive thing, it leaves our schools in a status quo position. Since 2008-09, general purpose funding for K-12 schools (revenue limits) has been cut by 12%, and funding for earmarked purposes (textbooks, career technical education, for example) have suffered reductions of nearly 20%. Thus, this ballot measure comes after districts have already sustained long-term cuts that remain in place. Had the measure failed and the trigger cuts been implemented, GUSD would have lost approximately $3.5 million in just the second half of the school year, requiring a shortened school year and furlough days. Because the state still defers approximately 40% of revenue to schools, districts will still face cash flow challenges later in the fiscal year, but it appears that we can now plan on a full school year without furlough days. The passing of Prop 30 should help at least stabilize future school funding, and gives us hope that the state is moving in the right direction.

FRIENDS OF THE FOUNDATION KICK-OFF MEETING

FGUS kicked off a new volunteer group, Friends of the Foundation, with a meeting graciously hosted by Luca Bella on October 29th. With a theme of An Opportunity to Get Involved, the meeting aimed to raise awareness of volunteer needs in various areas, and provided opportunity for filling those positions. To continue our ongoing success, many areas still require additional help. For any questions, or if you are interested in becoming involved, please contact: Donna Smith, (626) 290-9794, donna.smith@lee-ro.com. ALL ARE WELCOME!
