TECHNICAL ENGLISH FOR TELECOMMUNICATIONS ENGINEERING ST 1 TERM TEACHING GUIDE COURSE 2009-2010

GENERAL DESCRIPTION In this subject: 1) You will be introduced to diverse professional contexts of the industrial engineering practice and through different means, text and audiovisual. 2) You will learn to reflect upon your own learning progress through the elaboration of your own language portfolio. 3) You will be asked to work in a team, prepare a group oral presentation and co-evaluate your peers. 4) You will learn how to write a CV or resume. III. REQUIREMENTS: It is recommended to take both terms in the same academic year, as the course is planned in full, from October to June, in spite of the compulsory division in two terms. You should have a previous level of intermediate general English (Bachillerato, 1st course of the second cycle at the School of Languages or B1 of the European Portfolio). If that is not the case, youd better take some general English courses before this one at the Servicio de idiomas. IV. MATERIALS AND RESOURCES TEXT AND AUDIOVISUAL MATERIAL: The text material can be withdrawn from the photocopy room at Antiguones. The audiovisual material is available in a direct access folder called Teleco, at the desktop of all computers in the multimedia laboratory. And this document that you are reading now is also part of the necessary material, as here you can find all the class activities of the subject.

V. OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION 1. Average time dedicated to the subject. If you attend to classes regularly, you wont need to dedicate much extra time at home to the subject, as whole sessions will be dedicated to the completion of written assignments and/or the preparation of the oral presentation exam. If you cannot attend to classes, you should work at least two hours a week at home or in the multimedia laboratory. Of course, this is an average reference, because everything depends on your own proficiency and needs. 3. Exams and evaluation

You will be evaluated on the following grounds: 1) A group oral presentation (2-4 students) of 12 min. maximum on a technical topic (see session 2 below for further information). 2) The elaboration and delivery of a portfolio (see session 3 below for further information). Each test accounts for 50% of the final qualification, but both must be passed in order to obtain the corresponding credits.
