Project Stat 220: Fall 2012 Due date: January 20, 2013

(This project worth 10% of the total marks of the course. Please work in group and submit a group report of maximum 9 pages).

TO MINIMIZE the risk of disease due to diet, a number of dietary recommendations have been made. The U.S. National Cancer Institute (1987) and Research Council (1989), for instance, suggest that no more than 30% of the calories we consume consist of fat, and that no more than 10% of the calories we consume consist of simple carbohydrates (sugars). What follows is a project which allows students to determine the above percentages for a given food item from a regression model which they build using food data from table 1. In the process of computing these percentages students are enlightened about misleading advertising claims on the labels of food products. 1. Test the claim of The U.S. National Cancer Institute (1987) and Research Council (1989), 2. Conduct a complete analysis using an appropriate statistical method to explain the relations ship between number of calories and the quantities of Fat, Protein and Carbohydrates components.

Submit a written report following the guidelines below. Please submit your written report at the beginning of the class on Tuesday, 05 June 2012. In case of late submission without prior approval of the instructor, 10% of your mark will be taken off for each additional day after the due date.

Guideline for the project Overview This project provides an opportunity to: Develop your skills in statistical research and analysis ; Apply techniques and principles taught in this course; Develop report writing skills; Participate in, and become aware of, group dynamics. Your report should demonstrate that you have achieved the above mentioned skills. There should be primarily four sections in your written report: Introduction; Analysis; Results; Conclusion What should you do in each section? Title: Give an appropriate title of your project Introduction: What is the background to the problem, why are you interested in it? What is the general problem you are trying to solve? What are your objectives? Are there any questions/propositions you intend to test? (The length of this section should be from to 1 page.)

Analysis: Describe the data you have obtained? What kind of data they are? What are the appropriate statistical analyses to analyze such data and why? Then you do the appropriate analyses of the data. You are expected to do some graphical as well as numerical analyses of the data.

(The length of this section should be from 4 to 6 pages.) You can use Minitab but do not use the raw output of Minitab alone. You must collect the required information from Minitab output and present in appropriate order. Results: Briefly describe the results that you have obtained from your analyses. (The length of this section should be 1 page max.) Conclusion: What is your conclusion regarding the questions/propositions you have? Do you have any suggestion to improve your analyses? (The length of this section should be 1 page max.)

Important notes: There are five sections of your project. Each section worth 10 marks. Write the names and student IDs of the group members on the cover page. The report should be written in such a way so that anyone with no or very little statistical knowledge understands the problem and your findings. It must be your own work. If any two group reports are identical both of the groups will be awarded 0 (zero) mark.
