By Rin Porter At their Dec. 18 board meeting, Todd County Commissioners handled numerous routine matters. They set a special board meeting for Friday, Dec. 28, to handle the rest of the end-of-the-year issues, and cancelled the meeting scheduled for Dec. 31. They also set the salaries of the four elected officials who serve the county: Auditor/Treasurer, Recorder, Attorney, and Sheriff. By statute, these salaries are set annually by the county board. Last year, the board made an agreement to set the salaries for the four elected officials for two years 2012 and 2013. On Dec. 18, they affirmed their agreement and published the 2013 salaries. Lakewood Health helps boost students safety

The Browerville Public School has received a very generous donation of 13 booster seats for the Head Start and Early Childhood vans from Lakewood Health Systems. The booster seats meet all national child safety standards. Lori Knudsen, a nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technician works for Lakewood Health Systems was instrumental in making this donation possible. She also provided in-service information for our drivers in the proper installation and use of the booster seats. Lori shared in correspondence that; Child safety seats and safety belts, when installed and used properly, can prevent injuries and save lives. Young children restrained in child safety seats have an 80% lower risk of fatal injury than those who are unrestrained. Browerville Public School is thankful to Lakewood Health System for this donation and also encourages all of our parents to buckle up their children in proper car seats and booster seats when traveling. The safety of this precious cargo is the most important issue we can consider. Child safety seats and safety belts, when installed and use properly, can prevent injuries and save lives. Each year, an estimated 975 child occupants under 14 years of age die as a result of a motor vehicle incident. Young children restained in child safety seats have an 80% lower risk of fatal injury than those who are unrestrained. Tens of thousands of individuals have been certified as Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technicians and Instructors since the standardized curriculum and certification program began in 1997. CPS Technicians and Instructors put their knowledge to work through a variety of activities, including child safety seat checks where parents and caregivers receive education and hands-on assistance with the proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts.
