ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effectiveness of utilizing the CD


courseware distributed by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in
improving student’s comprehension and interest of short stories
applied in English literature classroom. Forty students of Sekolah
Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Falahiah Kelantan participated in
this study. Students from two intact classes were assigned to the
control and the experimental groups. The experimental group was
taught using the CD courseware; meanwhile the control group
received traditional instruction only. The students took a pre-test
prior to the beginning of the study and a post-test after the delivery
of treatment. The researcher also gave out questionnaires, held the
interview sessions, and made observation to measure the
effectiveness of the strategy applied. The result of the post-test
showed that the group that was taught with the CD courseware
achieved better score than the traditional didactic instructional
group. The results from the interview, observation and
questionnaires too supported that the CD courseware could enhance
students’ understanding and interest in learning English literature.
Thus, it is concluded that the CD courseware play a significant role
in enhancing students’ understanding and interest and it is effective
in teaching literature, namely short stories.

ABSTRAK

Kajian ini menilai keberkesanan penggunaan CD perisian kursus


yang diedarkan oleh Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia (KMP) dalam
meningkatkan pemahaman dan minat pelajar terhadap cerita pendek
yang terdapat dalam kelas kesusasteraan bahasa Inggeris. Empat
puluh orang pelajar daripada Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan
Kedondong, Pasir Mas Kelantan terlibat dalam kajian ini. Pelajar-
pelajar dari dua kelas berasingan dijadikan kumpulan kawalan dan
kumpulan eksperimen. Kumpulan eksperimen diajar dengan
menggunakan CD perisian kursus; manakala kumpulan kawalan
hanya diajar dengan menggunakan kaedah tradisional. Pelajar-
pelajar diberikan ujian-awalan di permulaan kajian, dan ujian-
akhiran setelah kaedah rawatan diperkenalkan. Penyilidik turut
mengedarkan boring soal selidik, mengadakan sesi temuramah dan
melakukan pemerhatian dalam usaha mengukur keberkesanan
strategi yang digunakan. Keputusan daripada ujian-akhiran
menunjukkan bahawa kumpulan yang diajar menggunakan CD
perisisan kursus mendapat markah yang lebih baik berbanding
dengan kumpulan yang diajar dengan kaedah tradisional. Keputusan
daripada kaedah temuramah, pemerhatian dan boring soal selidik
juga menyokong bahawa penggunaan CD perisian kursus mampu
meningkatkan pemahaman dan minat pelajar dalam pembelajaran
kesusasteraan bahasa Inggeris. Oleh yang demikian, dapatlah
dirumuskan bahawa CD perisian kursus memainkan peranan yang
signifikan dalam meningkarkan pemahaman dan minat pelajar, dan
berkesan untuk dalam pengajaran sastera, terutama sekali cerita
pendek.
