Although the la w went into effect on January 1, 2012, many companies covered by the law are sti ll determining how to meet its requirements. The Information Brief contains an Executive Summary, an analysis of each Section of the law and suggestions for complying with the law. Readers of the Informati on Brief will understand the laws requirements for covered companies to disclose: *efforts to verify human trafficking and slavery risks in the companys supply cha in *their use of supplier audits to ensure compliance with corporate anti-slavery a nd anti-trafficking policies *their use of direct supplier self-certification of compliance with local anti-s lavery and anti-trafficking laws *the companys internal accountability standards and policies applicable to employ ees and contractors as they relate to these issues; and *the companys training protocol on these issues for those involved in its supply chain management. In issuing the Information Brief, firm president Robert Kuhn said, It is becoming a best practice in supply chain sustainability to take a holistic view and simu ltaneously address both environmental and social dimensions with suppliers. One of the current hot buttons on the social side relates to human rights concerns, specifically the usually under-the-radar human trafficking and slavery activitie s that can occur in suppliers to U.S. and other companies. California wants comp anies that do business in its state to tell the public on their websites what th ey are doing in this area even if they arent doing much. Thats the intent of this law. But its not a well-written law and the purpose of the Information Brief is t o clarify the law and suggest how to comply. Were working with clients now on hel ping them review their activities and policies in this area and draft the necess ary disclosure language.
