Inside KRCB

What makes a program a KRCB Health Connections program?

Any program that provides information or tells a story about the quality of our lives can be considered a Health Connections program. For example, this month KRCB features a program about longevity from the perspective that growing older doesnt have to mean fading into obscurity. There is also a program about older women choosing to have babies and one that looks at the ability of art to transform the lives of homeless people. These programs arent telling us to eat better, exercise more, or to read more bookswhich is often what comes to mind when someone says be healthy. See page 6 for program details. Health Connections reveals the scope of what individual and community health looks like from multiple perspectives, using a wide angle lens as well as a microscope. But it wont be our programming alone that makes a difference in our collective wellbeing; it will be how people respond as a community. Part of the Health Connections initiative includes providing opportunities for community discussions to take place using our programson TV, radio and on our websiteas a catalyst for deeper understanding of the choices we can make as individuals that will connect us to greater health as a community.

From the PRESIDENT

Dear Member, As the New Year swings into full gear there are a number of projects underway at KRCB. Some you may have heard about, others may be new; all of them have been developed in conjunction with our community, responding to needs and opportunities. We mentioned last month the new emergency generator at KRCB. Youll see the picture on page 7. Thanks to PBS and the community donors. KRCB Live! is swinging into its second season with two great shows/recordings in January. We caught Darryl Purpose at Main Stage West in Sebastopol and worked with the Green Music Center to present and record Helen Jane Long later in the month. In response to community request that KRCB feature local and visiting artists in a way that is accessible to the entire community, KRCB is Nancy Dobbs, President and CEO presenting these and other artists on television and on radio. And youll be able to check out the performances at krcb.org as well. As Cheryl Scholar has shared elsewhere in this issue, two other major undertakings are underway. Look for all the different ways we will be introducing and enjoying the poetry of Emily Dickinson in the month of March as well as the imminent launch of KRCBs Health Connections Initiative. Really, loads going on and your support makes it happen. The community that works together, works. Sincerely, KRCB Staff

We are counting down the days before the Belle of Amherst comes to Sonoma County to kick off Big Read, Sonoma County! Julie Harris won a Tony Award for her portrayal of poet Emily Dickinson in the 1976 stage play The Belle of Amherst by William Luce. Later the one-woman play was filmed and aired on PBS stations receiving critical acclaim for the insights it provided into the life of one of Americas greatest poets. Now, Barbara Dana, author, playwright and actress, is coming to Sonoma County to perform in The Belle of Amherst on March 2, 2013 (time and place TBD). This is Barbara Danas first performance on the West Coast and we are very excited to host her. In addition to the performance, Ms. Dana will be speaking at several Copperfields Books locations sharing her knowledge about Emily Dickinsons life. She has published two books about Emily Dickinson: A Voice of Her Own, a novel for young adults, and Wider Than the Sky: Essays and Meditations on the Healing Power of Emily Dickinson (co-editor). Her itinerary will be posted at www.copperfieldbooks.org. More information about Big Read, Sonoma County events will be posted on www.krcb.org/thebigread or you can contact Cheryl Scholar, Community Engagement Director at KRCB North Bay Public Media: 707.584.2005. Many factors make up a healthy community. Some of the major indicators include high school graduation rates, economic stability, physical activity, prevention of injuries, and access to health care, affordable healthy food and a clean environment. For the benefit of our shared community, some of KRCB programming will shine a spotlight on these societal issues and remedies. Health Connections programs are aired in the belief that knowledge is power, and working together we can make our community one of the healthiest in the nation. Two programs we are airing this month look at the wonders of aging in the 21st century.

Inside E Street: The Age of Longevity

Friday, February 1 at 8 pm On this episode we spotlight the life of Bill Marriott Jr., (pictured) former CEO and current Executive Chairman of Marriott International, and three-time Grammy award-winning jazz pianist and composer Ramsey Lewis. Both men prove that growing older does not mean fading into obscurity. Host: Lark McCarthy. Friday, February 9 at 8 pm Women giving birth in their 40s hardly seems unusual any more. But what about having a baby at age 50 or older? Its the new frontier of motherhood. Inside E Street examines whether the reproductive technology that allows older women to have babies is good for society. While birth rates are generally down across the board, birth rates for older women are up. Humble Beauty looks at the power of art to transform attitudes in the indigent community.

Humble Beauty: Skid Row Artists

Water World

Water. All life depends on it. Human populations and environmental ecosystems to be sure, but also private industry and government economies. Today, however, this precious resource is literally drying up. Right here in the Bay Area, were feeling the consequences of a diminished snowpack in the Sierras and an increasingly beleaguered Bay Delta estuary. What are the impacts? And where are the solutions? According to Jason Morrison, Program Director at the Pacific Institute, in many parts of the world today, neither aquatic systems nor populations are getting their needs met. In 2010, the United Nations declared a human right to water. Now we need to figure out how to fulfill it. He envisions roles for a number of segments of society.

Congregation Power

People from many religious traditions are acting as stewards of creation by powering their congregations with clean energy and encouraging smart policies in their communities. Leaders of this movement contend that all major religions have a mandate to care for creation. Groups like Interfaith Power and Light are working to make houses of worship more efficient and sustainable. Climate One spoke to Reverend Sally Bingham (Founder, Interfaith Power and Light), Rabbi Yonatan Neril (Founder & Executive Director, Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development, Jerusalem), and Reverend Donald Ng (First Chinese Baptist Church, San Francisco) on what it means to be good stewards of creation. Being at the top of creation, says Rabbi Neril, we have a particular responsibility to treat it with respect.

Generation Green

Can the next generation save us all? The Alliance for Climate Education has trained nearly 1.5 million high school students around the country to reduce their own carbon footprint and engage others to do the same. Rosemary Davies was one of 40 high school youths from around the world who traveled to the Arctic in 2012 for a transformative experience learning about climate and culture. Join a conversation with youth advocates and social entrepreneurs educating students in school and in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Out of Order

Sunday, February 17 at 11 am Now more than ever, American citizens are discontented and disillusioned with national politics, with approval ratings for Congress consistently ranking low regardless of the party in power. Senior politicians also note the disappearance of the collegiality they once shared with peers of differing political ideologies. As a result, the ability to discuss issues from varying points of view and negotiate solutions, appears to be fading from the American political process. Among many topics, Out of Order addresses the decline in civil discourse and the news medias role in it, partisan gridlock, gerrymandering, vanishing commitment to reasonable compromise, the vilification of moderates and declining civic engagement. The half-hour documentary relies on interviews with a broad range of political experts and observers from journalists, academics and political strategists to senior elected officials. They include: journalist Bob Schieffer (pictured) (CBS News), Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), Sen. Susan Collins (R-MA), Fmr Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN), Fmr Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY), Fmr Sen. John Warner (R-VA).

Among the health benefits of yoga are lowering blood pressure, reducing or eliminating back problems, rejuvenating joint mobility, elongating the muscles and eliminating muscular tension and stress.

Message from our Volunteer Manager

Volunteering at KRCB
Instead of featuring one of our current volunteers, I thought Id take the opportunity to invite you to be a KRCB Volunteer! We are currently looking for able-bodied volunteers who would like to join our volunteer production crew. The duties range from operating stationary cameras to editing video for broadcast. This coming April we will be looking for people to help with our Spring Auction that is broadcast live from our studio in Rohnert Park. We start the broadcast at 7 pm and end at 11 pm; the dates are: April 12, 13, 14, and 19, 20, 21. We also look for people who are comfortable in front of the camera to be our on-air hosts. If you or your colleagues want to come answer phones during the live auction we welcome that as well. Volunteers are also needed to assist in the production of KRCB Live! that airs monthly on TV and on Radio 91 FM. KRCB Live! features local up-and-coming musicians; some performances are filmed in our studio and others will be shot on location at local venues. On the radio side we have opportunities for operating the radio board. Prior experience is a plus for both TV and Radio volunteering but we do provide training. If video/ audio production is not your thing but you are good with a hammer and a nail we could use your construction skills to help with some remodeling projects. People of all ages volunteer at KRCB; we have high school students as well as retired adults. Volunteering is a great way to meet fellow KRCB supporters and have fun while you are helping your local public broadcasting station. Contact Cheryl Scholar, KRCB Community Engagement Director and Volunteer Manager at 707.584.2005 or email cheryl_scholar@krcb.org for a chance to be our next volunteer of the month!
