Handing Off the Baton

Ministry is a relay race and not a rat race. We have developed an amazing synergy in our ministry here at First Baptist Church of Naples, focusing on our primary goals and finding unity in the midst of diversity. We give particular focus to how One generation shall praise Gods works to another and declare His mighty acts (Psalm 145:4). This is particularly true in our ministry to the children and students. Unfortunately, in most American churches, the baton has been dropped during the hand-off in the race of discipleship. Eight out of ten Americans consider themselves Christians, according to a Gallup poll, yet only half of them identify the Person who gave the Sermon on the Mount. Fewer still can recall five of the Ten Commandments. Only two said they were willing to suffer for their faith. Many Christian students have a silent contract, refusing to share their faith in order to be politically correct. Our children and student ministries are seeking to correct that.
Dr. Hayes Wicker Senior Pastor

We are grateful for all of our childrens directors and ministers in the past, including most recently Larry Rigley, who is now serving as our Associate Pastor in Pastoral Care and Senior Adult Activities. Mrs. Betsy Evans has been our interim director, working with elementary age children. The Childrens Ministry Director leads Bible and Life Groups, AWANA, KidzTown, and other facets of that important area. The Personnel Committee and I are presenting Betsy in view of a call to be voted upon by our church, January 26/27, according to our Constitution. She has done a wonderful job as a volunteer for 12 years, along with her husband, Jim, working with Bible & Life Groups, puppet ministry, AWANA, Apples of Gold, and being the Large Group Director of Vacation Bible School (Kidz Summer Quest). She was also Act 1 Director, teaching drama and Christian service to fifth graders. She was raised in north Indiana by godly parents and accepted Christ as a young girl. She received a BS in Business Administration from Olivet Nazarene University and a Child Development Associate Degree from Lorenzo Walker. She and Jim have raised two children, Jeff and Jennifer, and they can attest to her commitment to building and telling of Gods great works to the next generation. She has also been the Director of Childrens Ministry in two churches in other cities, as well as teaching at First Baptist Academy. Betsy served as an Assistant Director in Daycare in Indiana. We are blessed with her warm and winsome spirit, administrative gifts, and record of faithful service. Claiming Isaiah 40:2831, she knows that the Lord will renew her strength. Pray for her as she shares her testimony and as we vote by secret ballot next weekend.

Next Weekend January 26 & 27
Betsy desires to encourage parents to live obedient Christian lives before their children so that their children will be influenced for Christ like she was by her parents. She supports the parents by assisting them in teaching their children who God is and His wonderful plan of salvation so they can grow to live a joyful Christian life.
