FreeB 12

FreeB-12 is a 12 foot long by 28 wide recreational kayak recreational kayak. It has a 36" long coaming making it easier to get in and out of. The high stability should be comfortable for a first timer paddlers. I can imagine this boat being used for fishing or photography from in flat water. I would not recommend it for open water. Constructing is simple since it has only 4 frames. It is built using the fuselage frame method. You cut the frames from plywood. The stringers are typically cedar and run the length of the boat. They are lashed to the frames with artificial sinew. Then the boat is skinned with a synthetic fabric such as nylon or polyester. A waterproof finish is applied to the skin. Be warned however that due to its short length there are strong bends in the stringers and this will probably be the hardest part for a first time builder. You will need good straight grained lumber for stringers or they may break when you bend them in place. No support is provided. The offsets are intended for those that understand the building process. If you have never built a fuselage frame boat then I suggest buying a copy of my book Fuselage Frame Boats, A guide to building skin kayaks and Canoes. It will walk you through the steps of building this style boat. You can buy a copy at the Kudzu Craft store. Cut frames from thick marine grade plywood. Maintain a minimum of 1 width on the frames. Bow and Stern are a minimum of 4 wide. Stringers are made from western red cedar and are 5/8 or 3/4 thick. The Gunwales are 1-1/2 tall. The rest of the stringers are 1 tall.

Coaming Offsets

Coaming consists of 3 rings. 2 of the rings are wide. The top ring is 1-1/4 wide. Cut the coaming from the same plywood as the frames. Offsets are inside dimensions.
