INSTRUCTIONS LUBRICATION SYSTEM FOR HORIZONTAL MOTORS

GEl65724D

GENERAL
The motors covered by these instructions may be supplied with sleeve, ball or roller bearings, depending upon the operating conditions and/or the purchasers request.

mal ambient temperatures that do not go below 32 F and which do not exceed 110 F. A reputable oil company should be consulted regarding equivalent lubricants outside this temperature range.

Machines, 1800 through 3600 rpm

For normal ambient temperatures, use a good grade of oxidation- and corrosion-inhibited, mineral-base turbine oil. It is recommended that oil with a viscosity range of 140 to 170 SUS at 100 F be used. These values of viscosity are based on normal ambient temperatures that do not go below 32 F andwhichdo not exceed 110 F. In automotive terms, this viscosity range corresponds to SAE No. 10, but turbine oil rather than automotiveoil is recommended. A reputable oil company should be consulted regarding equivalent lubricants outside this temperature range.

SLEEVE BEARINGS
Large split-sleeve bearings are used to position and align the rotor. In general, these motors are furnished with conventional oil-ring-lubricated bearings: however, larger motors are designed with pressure-lubricated bearings. All pressurelubricated bearings will also have oil rings which will afford sufficient lubrication for a short time should the pressure-lubrication system fail.

BALL AND ROLLER BEARINGS

Ball and roller bearings areselected for special applications such as belting, etc. Generally, a roller bearing will be used on the drive end and a ball bearing on the opposite-drive end of the motor. Ball and roller bearings are generally grease lubricated.

Standard Oil-ring Systems

Fill the bearing-housing oil reservoir by pouring oil into one of the pipe-plugged holes located in the top of the bearing housing. Oil should be added until the level reaches the middle of the bulls-eye sight glass located on the side of the bearing housing. This oil level should be maintained at all times.

INSTALLATION
SLEEVE BEARING MOTORS
The motor is shipped from the factory without lubricating oil. Before starting the motor for the first time, it is necessary to fill the oil reservoirs of the lubricating system.

Trico Oilers
Totally enclosed, fan-cooledmotors may employ Trico Optomatic* oil bottles (Fig. 3) to maintain the oil level in the oil-ring reservoirs. These oil bottles will add make-up oil if the oil level should drop, and also give an indication of any loss of oil. The required oil level for a given motor is shown on the outline drawing provided with the motor and by a nameplate affixed to the motor frame. The adjustable stops in the Trico base are preset at the *Trademark of the Trico Fuse Mfg. Co.

Machines, 1200 rpm and slower

For normal ambient temperatures, use a good grade of oxidation- and corrosion-inhibited, mineral-base, turbine oil. It is recommended that oil with a viscosity range of 270 to 325 SUS at 100 F be used for motors operating at speeds of 1200 rpm and lower. These values of viscosity are based on nor-

ing, the speed at which the bearing operates, and the severity of operating conditions. As a result, it is not possible to accurately predetermine when new grease must be added. Good results can be obtained if the general recommendations as stated in this instruction book are followed. The primary function of grease is to supply the essential lubricating oil from the sponge-like reservoir of its soap structure. Grease-lubricated, anti-friction bearings consume only a small amount of lubricant: however, this lubricant must always be present to avoid rapid wear and bearing failure. Toobtainoptimum results, the recommended grease should be used, and regreasing should be as often as operating conditions dictate.
NOTE: Some sodium-basegreases are not compatible with lithium-base greases and should not be mixed. Bearings aye factorygreased with lithium -base grease.

factory and should not be moved. Verify by measurement that the outline, nameplate and stop locations are in agreement prior to filling the oil reservoir. The oil ring reservoir should be filled by removing the Trico bottle from its base, filling the bottle with oil, then replacing the bottle on the base. Depending on motor size, several bottles of oil may be required to fill the reservoir. Allow sufficient time for filling to take place. The proper oil level within the motor will be attained when the oil level in the Trico bottle stabilizes.
BALL AND ROLLER BEARING MOTORS

FAILURE TO OBSERVE THESE PRECAUTIONS MAY RESULT IN INJURY TO PERSONNEL.

Motors with ball and roller bearings are shipped from the factory with the bearings packed with grease. If the machines have been stored for a long period of tune it is advisable to regrease the bearings before operation. The grease used as a lubricant in grease-lubricated, anti-friction bearings does not lose its lubricating ability suddenly - but over a period of time. For a given bearing construction and assembly, the lubricating ability of a grease with age depends primarily upon the type of grease, the size of the bear-

The bearing housings of the motor are provided with liberal settling chambers into which sediment may collect. These chambers should be cleaned periodically. Cleaning can be accomplished by removing the drain plug located in the bottom of the bearing housing. The drain oil will carry most of the settled material with it. Under normal conditions, this is the only cleaning necessary. Should it becomenecessary to clean the chamber more thoroughly, a solvent with a petroleum spirit base may be used. The solvent should be introduced through the oil-filler opening at the top of the bearing housing. The drain plug should be removed to ,prevent the solvent from overflowing the oil-chamber dam and entering the main oil reservoir via the oil- return piping.
WARNING: MANY CLEANING FLUIDS ARE FLAMMABLE AND/OR TOXIC. TO PREVENT INJURY TO PERSONNEL AND BE TAKEN PROPERTY, CARE SHOULD TO AVOID FLAMES, SPARKS, ETC. SAFETY GLASSES SHOULD BE USED AND EXCESSIVE CONTACT WITH THE SKIN SHOULD BE AVOIDED. THE AREA SHOULD BE WELL VENTILATED OR PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT SHOULD BE USED.

Wegreasing

The motors considered here should be regreased after 6 to 9 months of operation in an average ambient temperature and under normal operating conditions. More severe conditions require more frequent maintenance . The following procedure should be used in regreasing: 1. Stop the unit. 2. Remove the relief plug and free the hole of hardened grease. 3. Wipe the lubrication fitting clean and add grease with a band-operated grease gun. 4. Leave the relief plug temporarily off. Start the unit and run for about 20 minutes to expel the excess grease. 5. Stop the unit. Replace the relief plug.
CAUTION: FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE FOREGOING INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN GREASE LEAKAGE.

After flushing, reseal the oil-drain plug with an oil-sealing compound such as GE No. 1201 Glyptal** Alkyd-resin compound, or No. 3 Permatex. Refill the reservoir with clean oil.

Grease Recommendations

Cleaning

To assure proper relubricationof the motor, regreasewith General Electric grease No. D6A2C5 or a grease meeting the following specifications: **Registered Trademark of the General Electric Company

Since the method of greasing anti-friction bearings tends to purge the housing of used grease, removal of all grease should be required infrequently. Whenever the motor is disassembled for general cleaning, however, the bearings andhousings should be cleaned of old grease by washing with a greasedissolving solvent.
