Code: 9D12101 M.TECH - I Semester Regular and Supplementary Examinations, April/May 2012 ADVANCED SOIL MECHANICS (Geotechnical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 60 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** 1 (a) (b) Show how the various fundamentals clay-structure models are formed in nature and discuss forces influential in the formation of these various structures. Explain why electrical surface forces are important for fine grained soils but have little effect on coarse grained soils. Discuss critically the soil characteristics affecting shrinkage and swelling of soils. From an engineering point of view, explain the properties of clay minerals. What is a flow net? Describe its properties and applications. Describe the procedure for drawing the flow net diagram for homogeneous embankment by graphical method. What is a significance of the pore pressure coefficients? How are the pore pressure parameters A and B determined? Pore pressure measurements were made during undrained triaxial tests on samples of compacted fill material form an earth dam after saturating them in the laboratory. The results were as follows: Parameter Test Test 150 450 Lateral pressure ( 3 ) 2 400 1000 Total vertical pressure ( 1 ), kN/m 2 30 125 Pore water pressure ( ) kN/m Determine the apparent cohesion and the angle of shearing resistance as referred to (i) total stress and (ii) effective stress.

Code: 9D12101 6 (a) (b) Define the terms: principal planes and principal stresses. A body is subjected to direct stresses in two mutually perpendicular directions. How will you determine graphically the resultant stress on an inclined plane when: (i) The stress are unequal and unlike, and (ii) The stresses are unequal and like. What is the difference between immediate settlement, primary, consolidation settlement and secondary compression settlement? A clay layer 25m thick has a saturated unit weight of 19.2kN/m3. Ground water level occurs at a depth of 5m. It is proposed to conduct a reinforced concrete foundation, 12.5m 50m, on top of the layer, to transmit a uniform pressure of 150kN/m2. Determine the settlement at its centre, assuming that the void ratio drops from 0.725 to 0.700 due to loading. E for the clay is 30MN/m2. Explain in detail the Tresca failure envelope theory. Describe the failure theories of Wu, Loh and Malvern on cohesive soils. *****
