I pray that each of you have experienced wonderful beginnings to your new year! I hope that your resolutions are still going strong and that the anticipation you had for 2013 is still alive. As many of you know, Easter comes early this year, March 31st to be exact. That means our season of Lent will begin earlier as well. In order to help us enter into this season representing the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan, you will have two opportunities to gather for a time of prayer and worship. On Ash Wednesday, February 13th, from 12 PM 1 PM, the Sanctuary will be open for you to come and observe a quiet time and space. You can come and sit in a pew or kneel at the altar rail. You can read Scripture, pray, or meditate. It will be your time to do that which helps you draw closer to God. I will be there to pray with you, if you desire, as well as to place ashes on your forehead when you are ready to leave. I hope you will make plans to take advantage of this opportunity. We will also have a service that evening at 6 P.M. in the Sanctuary. During this service, we will read Scripture and I will deliver a message entitled, Whos the Good Guy? This year, Pastor Debbie and I found a series entitled Ashes to Fire to guide our worship time for both churches during this season. This series is an intentional journey with Jesus that will guide us from Ash Wednesday through Holy Week and Easter and on to Pentecost Sunday from penitence to praise to power. Each week, Pastor Debbie and I will prepare the sermon together and preach the same message to both congregations. Corporately, over these next fourteen weeks, we will look at the insight we can gain from Scripture, from the example of Jesus Christ, and the power contained therein. I am very excited to see this unfold and the ways in which the Holy Spirit will be at work. As we embark on this journey together, I pray you feel the Holy Spirit at work, that you draw near to God, and that your heart and mind receive that which

Prayer serves as the backbone of the church. It is what supports all our efforts of ministry. In that spirit, you are invited to hold these persons in your prayers and thoughts. Just as the Spirit needs healing, so does the body. The two, it seems, go together in Gods plan.

God desires to give you. I invite you to be a willing vessel, eager to be filled by God and emptied of yourself. I encourage you to set aside those obstacles that will prevent your mind and soul from concentrating on God. I urge you to walk into those uncomfortable spaces, relying solely on the power of the Holy Spirit to guide you, allowing the journey to unfold naturally, without the stress of preconceived ideas. Let God guide you on this journey and you will be blessed! Blessings on you all!

COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT I love the United Methodist Church. I love the way we are not put into the community alone, but rather we are part of a connection, joined with all other United Methodist Churches, around the globe. There are many benefits to this way of being, one of which is our polity. If you have never heard of this word, it basically means the way we do church. Our polity is what helps us stay focused on worship and outreach and it is all put in place with a great deal of intentionality. For people that have been United Methodist all of their life, our way of doing things is nothing new to them. But, if you have come to us from another denomination, faith tradition, or are new to your faith, you may not be aware of how all this works. Therefore; over the next several months, I will publish a little description of the various committees we use to help us accomplish the work of the church. These will hopefully serve to help inform you which committees are responsible for the various aspects of our church. This month we will look at Trustees. That will be followed by Finance in March, Church Council in April, and the Staff Parish Relations Committee in May.

Trustees: The Trustees Committee is the group of people we have appointed to care for the property and assets of our campus. We meet every other month to discuss upkeep, improvements, and plans to keep our campus well maintained. People serving on Trustees serve for a three year term and then roll off after that time. This committee is an open committee and any member of the congregation can attend a Trustees meeting, hear what is discussed and offer an opinion about a relevant matter, but cannot vote. Next month, we will spotlight our Finance Committee. All of the officers of each committee can be found on our Lay Leadership List located in the Office or in the Narthex of the Sanctuary. YOUVE DONE SO MUCH To: Pastor Daryl and Congregation: I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your acts of kindness. The members from your organization played a vital role in the success of our outreach. It was such a joy working together in meeting the needs of our community. Truly, it was done with much love! Warmest regards, Pastor Alice Faison, Sisterhood & Brotherhood Outreach Ministry

FLORIDA UNITED METHODIST CHILDRENS HOME

Did you know that you can purchase a wooden, homemade Adirondack Chair, pint-size Adirondack Chair, Glider or Picnic Table from FUMCH? Construction Technology may be a hot, busy & noisy place to work, but tremendous things are being accomplished there. Residents, who can become apprentices at 12 or 13, and who begin earning minimum wage at 14, are learning new skills, earning money toward construction tools for each hour they work & discovering the discipline within themselves which will aid them as they transition into the world outside the Home. The quality of their work is so well thought of that the shop may be awarded a contract to build an estimated 15 lifeguard towers for Daytona Beach & New Smyrna Beach. This would be a wonderful fundraising opportunity for the Childrens Home! Right now the residents are building adult & pint-sized Adirondack chairs, gliders, loveseats and picnic tables for sale to visitors. Erika Kahle, 18 & a 16 month resident, works in the shop all day & is paid minimum wage as a helper to the Childrens Home. Its a great program & we work really hard, she says. I enjoy working with the kids. Othal Wallace, a 4 year resident of the Home, used to do woodworking in high school & finds he gets in the zone when working in the shop. I know Mr. Rick (Hervey) depends on me to cut the wood & I dont want to let him down. To purchase one of the chairs or tables, contact Dr. Debra Suto-Henry at debra.henry@fumch.org or at 386668-4774. Sales tax of 6.5% will be added to the price. The chairs are too heavy to be shipped - you must come to the Childrens Home to pick up your purchase. Your purchase of a beautiful Adirondack chair or picnic table helps support our Construction Technology program & introduces our young people to a skill & trade they can always fall back on in order to make a living for themselves & their future families. Thank you! Pictures and prices are available in the Church Office. THANK YOU, MERCI BEAUCOUP, MUCHAS GRACIAS from Joy, Zlata, Carole and Pastor Daryl for all the Christmas gifts, goodies, cards and other remembrances over the Christmas holidays. We appreciate everything that you did to brighten our holidays!

BULLYING HAPPENS IN CHURCH, DONT IGNORE IT!

Page 7

Words are powerful. They can build up and they can tear down. I felt the power of words that can tear down as a seventh grader. From the first day of school, to the last, I was verbally and physically bullied. This young boy tripped me, knocked my books out of my hand, threw things at me, and made me feel very insecure about myself. I talked to the guidance counselor, the principle, my teachers, and my parents. In fact, in one session with my guidance counselor, she called this boy in and asked him why he was doing all these things to me. She asked him what I had done to him to cause this type of treatment from him. His response, nothing. This bullying was difficult to endure and made for a miserable seventh grade year. I know I am not the only person to ever have to endure this type of treatment from another. Many people have had to face the scorn of another, and most times it is underserved. In this months edition of the Interpreter, a United Methodist Magazine, there was a tremendous article entitled, Bullying Happens in Church. Dont Ignore It! The author, Rev. Erik Alsgaard writes, Bullying is fast becoming a national epidemic in the United States and churches are not immune as settings where attacks occur Adult bullying does exist. I bring this up because this article really made an impact on me. After I read it, I began to think about all of the times that my words could have been, and probably were, viewed as bullying. How many times have any of us, said words that were unkind and undeserved, or engaged in body language where the only intent was to hurt? How many times have we done that in a church setting to another believer, a fellow disciple? How many times have we had to endure those words and actions being directed toward us by another believer, a fellow disciple? I want to encourage all of us to follow the advice given in the book of James, My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. (James 1:19-20, NIV). The next time you are feeling angry, powerless, or confused, please remember this passage. Let us be slow to speak, first saying what we find good in another. Let us be slow to anger, understanding that we do not know all aspects of any given situation. Let us remember that we are called to be different, that we are called to live a life based on love and grace. Let the grace of God that has been shown to us, be the model that we use when we encounter others. Let us be quick to listen and reluctant to judge. Let this church, this congregation, always be a place of reconciliation, not bullying. So that the unfiltered power, grace, mercy, and love of God is experienced each and every time you set foot on this sacred ground. Let us love others, always and everywhere, the way Jesus first loved us.

MODELs MODELs (Mostly Older Debutantes Eating Lunch) will meet at First Watch, College Plaza, 3491 SW 36th Terrace on Feb. 21 at 12:30 pm. You can see a copy of their menu online or on the counter in the Church Office. If you plan to attend, please email your reservation to dhumcvol@yahoo.com or call the office by Feb. 19. Each month, we collect one dollar from each person who attends. During 2012, we raised $140 to be donated to the Florida UM Childrens Home.
