2. The title character in Oliver Twist is born into a life of poverty and is trapped in a
world where his only options seem to be the workhouse (debtors prison), joining a
criminal gang, going to prison, or an early grave. The author, Charles Dickens, was
himself a child laborer and his family was sent to the workhouse.
In your opinion, if Dickens had written a story about his personal experiences do you
think it would have had as much of an impact as his novel Oliver Twist? Why or why
not?
