Headlines Consumer Electronics (CE) Samsung Electronics said it likely earned a quarterly profit of $8.3 billion. Samsung expects sales of home appliances to climb 50 percent. Samsung debuted a new flexible display it is calling Youm. Samsung added a trio of interactive appliances to its 2013 lineup. Samsung coolly disclosed details on the highlights of its home theater line-up for 2013. LG plans to raise its investment to a record 11.69 billion pounds this year. LG announced that it would launch the long-awaited OLED TV into the U.S. LG unveiled a 55-inch TV. LG has shown its 84-inch 4K 3D. Sony Corp is joining with BMG to bid for Parlophone. Sony Corp is considering the sale of itsbattery business . Sony has built an entire ecosystem around NFC pairing. Sony is considering selling Sony City Osaki building. Panasonic announced the development of a new tablet computer that features a 20-inch IPS Alpha LCD panel. Toshiba is showing off at CES a prototype of an OLED smart watch. Mitsubishi Electric Corp. said that it has established its first subsidiary in Turkey. Vizio, one of the top television makers in the U.S., entered the PC market. Vizio showed off an impressive 10-inch tablet. Haier announced its 2013 line of televisions. TCL has officially reported that its fullyear LCD TV sales in 2012 reached 15.52 million units.

ICT Apple has added Watchever as a new streaming video option. Recent shipping delays for the 27-inch iMac can be blamed on production problems at LG Display. Samsung has canceled plans to release a Windows RT device in the U.S. Sony plans to emulate elite Android manufacturers. Lenovo will divide itself into different business groups. Asustek is aiming for the TV market with the introduction of an Internet streaming box. Acer plans to include retinal-class displays in several laptop models. Foxconn is internally working on new regulations to allow its purchasing processes to be controlled. Foxconn is being investigated by authorities over allegations that some of its employees accepted bribes from suppliers Home area networks will grow from $127 million in 2012 to $1.1 billion in 2020.

Panel Industry AU Optronics (AUO) has announced that its OLED panel jointly developed with Sony is used in Sony's prototype 4K OLED TV. Innolux Corporation has reported that its December revenues reached US$1.52 billion. Gorilla Glass has unvieled its latest screen Gorilla Glass 3 technology. Dongxu estimates that China's display industry will account for more than 20% of global glass demand by 2015, up from about 10% in 2012. Open cell TV panels sized 32-inch have recently seen a 1% or US$2 decline. Innolux Corp. (3481), the largest liquidcrystal display maker on the island, dropped 4.2 percent. The Taiwan-based makers are expected to continue bumping up production of the 39-inch panels.

Semiconductor Industry Intel Corporation announced a TV experience that will enable customers to view live and on-demand television content on Intel-based devices. Samsung's flagship Exynos 5 is a dualcore mobile chip that powers the company's ARM-based Google Chromebook.

Pace and Broadcom announced the development of a Media Server Gateway. Broadcom announced that Comcast has chosen its connected home set-top box (STB) technology. Broadcom has taken licenses for both the ARMv7 and ARMv8 instruction set architectures. Broadcom announced that its HomePlug AV (HPAV) Powerline Communications (PLC) solution has been selected by NETGEAR Broadcom announced LG Electronics has chosen Broadcom's 5G WiFi technology. Broadcom announced its optimized, entry level ADSL gateway solution. Broadcom Corp. (NASDAQ: BRCM) has announced a GPON Home Gateway Unit (HGU) system-on-a-chip (SoC). TI announced the full availability of a new ZigBee(). Qualcomm Atheros is rolling out StreamBoost. Hitachi has announced that it has come up with a solution that stores data on slivers of quartz glass. Sigma Designs announced that it will demonstrate a 4K x 2K digital TV platform on a 55" inch screen. Marvell and TCL announced that TCL is the first company to offer both a Smart TV and set-top box with Google TV. Car-to-X communications is about to get ready for market entry. NXP announced the availability of the JN516x family of wireless microcontrollers. STMicroelectronics and Quantenna Communications revealed today a Wi-Fi set-top box reference design platform. Inside Secure announced that Koreabased Telechips is integrating a host of INSIDE Secure security solutions. Nvidia unveiled its quad-core Tegra 4mobile processor. Bosch said it has integrated into a 32bit microcontroller a three-axis accelerometer. The GP690 ZigBee PRO from GreenPeak Teachnologies adds ZigBee PRO to the company's product } 3

portfolio, offering full support for its Open Smart Home Framework. Harbor predicts 802.11 enabled technology will grow from 1.4 billion shipments in 2012 to over 3.6 billion shipments by 2016. The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE) has officially approved the new 802.11ad.

Consumer Electronics (CE) Samsung Financial Samsung Electronics, the world leader in mobiles and memory chips, said it likely earned a quarterly profit of $8.3 billion, as it sold close to 500 handsets every minute and as demand picked up for the flat screens it makes for mobile devices, including those for rival Apple Inc products.

Service Industry Roku Inc., the closely held online video service, said its adding 300 live television channels. Amazon launched Amazon AutoRip. Turkcell and Spare Backup have begun the launch of a progressive rollout of Spare Backup's mobile backup and security tools to Turkcell's 35 million mobile subscribers.

Retail and Payment Industry Retalix shareholders approved its $660 million acquisition by NCR Corp. NCR Corporation announced the launch of NCR Mobile POS Optimization Consulting Services. Ingenico and Shift4 Corporation announced a partnership that brings Shift4s neutral. Agilysys announced it has partnered with Motion Computing. ShopKeep POS announced an exciting partnership with Griffin Technology.

Sales Expectation Samsung Electronics Co. (005930), the worlds biggest seller of smartphones, TVs and display panels, expects sales of home appliances to climb 50 percent during the next three years as it focuses on premium models with more functions. Annual revenue from the division making refrigerators, washing machines and ovens will climb to $18 billion in 2015 from about $12 billion last year, Younghoon Eom, executive vice president of sales and marketing, said in an interview in Las Vegas.

Energy Industry Hyflux had signed an agreement with Dahej Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for a sea-water desalination Project. ClipperCreek and Smartenit has resulted in the first commercially available device that can connect to smart meters.

Youm Flexible Display Samsung debuted a new flexible display it is calling Youm during the closing keynote at CES 2013. It first introduced the technology in April on its Korean site, but this is the first time Youm has been introduced in the U.S. Youm is quite impressive, and offers many options on ways to present information. This is not the first time flexible displays have been introduced, however. The idea has been around for a while, and each version seems to offer something different.

LGs stock performance OLED TV At CES in Las Vegas, LG announced that it would launch the long-awaited OLED TV into the U.S. market this March, for a suggested retail price of $12,000.

Interacvite appliances Samsung added a trio of interactive appliances to its 2013 lineup, such as the T9000 refrigerator with an LCD screen that lets you share lists on Evernote, check the weather, and program schedules in Google Calendar.

55 UHDTV LG unveiled a 55-inch TV that sports "ultrahigh-definition" resolution with four times the sharpness of regular HD television sets, kicking off what is likely to be a mini-obsession with the latest super-clear format at the annual International CES gadget show.

Home Theather Samsung coolly disclosed details on the highlights of its home theater line-up for 2013. The company is laying claim to introducing the worlds first sound bar system to be equipped with a vacuum tube, a new twist on Bluetooth for TV audio reproduction, gyros that improve sound quality, and an all-inone home theater system sporting an amplifier made with Gallium Nitride.

84 4K 3D LG has shown its 84-inch 4K 3D 84LM960 television in Las Vegas on the eve of CES 2013. This is LG's first 84inch Ultra HD TV, and based on these glimpses of it from the floor, it certainly looks like the company got it right on the first try.

The struggling Japanese company already struck a deal with Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, for a stake in exchange for some much-needed cash. But Hon Hai backed off when Sharp's shares took a dive and the Taiwanese firm has since been pushing for changes in Sharp's management.

Selling building Sony is considering selling Sony City Osaki building for about 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) to 130 billion yen ($1.5 billion), the person said. Employees are expected to stay at the location since the potential buyer is likely to lease the building to Sony. Panasonic Joining Smart TV Alliance Panasonic has joined LG's Smart TV Alliance which was set up to develop and use a single connected platform for televisions from 2013 onward.

Toshibas stock performance Mitsubishi Panasonics stock performance New Tablet Panasonic Corporation announced the development of a new tablet computer that features a 20-inch IPS Alpha LCD panel with more than four times the resolution of Full High Definition, as well as a high precision digital pen. With the target to commercialize the new tablet later this year, Panasonic is gearing itself up to propose new business value this feature-rich device will offer to its customers in a wide range of industries. ICT Apple New Streaming Video Apple has added Watchever as a new streaming video option on German Apple TVs, reports say. The service is similar to Netflix, and offers up a mix of German and American movies and TV shows. Vivendi in fact only launched Watchever January 9th, charging customers 9 per month.

Sony High End Android Phone

A marketing executive from Sony revealed the Japanese company plans to emulate elite Android manufacturers like Samsung by pumping out high-end smartphones and ignoring the cheaper, entry-level devices.

Lenovo New organization On April 1, Lenovo will divide itself into different business groups: the Lenovo Business Group, and the Think Business Group. The Think Business Group will deal with the Think-brand and business aspects, while the Lenovo Business Group will deal with Lenovo products and its Mobile Internet/Digital Home Group business. The changes will include the appointment of leaders to each group.

27 iMac Production Problem Recent shipping delays for the 27-inch iMac can be blamed on production problems at LG Display, say industry sources reached by DigiTimes. The people claim that LG has been encountering trouble with lamination, limiting the number of screens it can send out for assembly. Only about 100,000 27-inch systems can be shipped each month, the sources say. Asus Internet STB Asustek is aiming for the TV market with the introduction of an Internet streaming box called Qube, which will run on Google TV software.

Flat Panel Industry AUO OLED Panel In response to the coming era of 4K Ultra HD, AU Optronics (AUO) has announced that its OLED panel jointly developed with Sony is used in Sony's prototype 4K OLED TV which is on display at 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The 56-inch 4K OLED TV panel is the world's first and largest OLED TV panel in size, and is the first in the world to have achieved 4K (3840 by 2160) resolution, AUO said. AUO is also showcasing several large-size Ultra HD TV panels during CES to meet the trend for super large TV.

Innoluxs stock performance Corning Gorilla Glass 3 Gorilla Glass has unvieled its latest screen Gorilla Glass 3 technology at the CES 2013 show in Las Vegas. Gorilla Glass claims that the new glass will result in 40 per cent less glass damage, and was demonstrating its product using an metal ball, plastic tube, and glass products on the CES showfloor.

AUOs stock performance Innolux Financial Innolux Corporation has reported that its December revenues reached NT$44.31 billion (US$1.52 billion), making it the only major Taiwan-based panel maker to report increased revenues compared with AU Optronics (AUO), Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) and HannStar Display. Cornings stock performance Dongxu Glass Demand The Dongxu Group, a major Chinabased glass supplier, said that by 2015 Taiwan, Korea and Japan will all see their shares of glass demand drop, but China will be the only one who will see a rise. Dongxu said that glass demand will be boosted by growth in production for both LCD panels and touchscreens. The company estimates that worldwide glass substrate demand will reach 450 million square meters in 2013 and 590 million square meters in 2015.

Semiconductor Industry Intel New TV Experience Intel Corporation announced a TV experience that will enable customers to view live and on-demand television content on Intel-based devices. Intel is collaborating with Comcast so that customers can enjoy the XFINITY TV experience on IP set-top boxes, Ultrabook devices, Intel-based all-inone PCs, tablets and smartphones as well as smart TVs in the home. This experience is made possible by the Intel Puma 6MG-based XG5 multiscreen video gateway.

Panel Market Panel Prices Open cell TV panels sized 32-inch have recently seen a 1% or US$2 decline due to TV vendors slowing down orders and preparing for new TV arrivals in the beginning of the second quarter of 2013, according to market observers. The observers also said 55-inch Full HD edge-lit LED TV panels have dropped 0.4% or US$2 due to sharp price declines for 60-inch flat screen TV panels while prices for 39-inch ones made by Taiwan-based Innolux Corporation and AU Optronics (AUO) have remained steady.

Taiwanese Manufacturer shares fell Taiwans shares fell the most among Asias equity markets, led by the nations biggest flat-panel companies. Innolux Corp. (3481), the largest liquid-crystal display maker on the island, dropped 4.2 percent. AU Optronics Corp., the second biggest, declined 3.3 percent. Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd. decreased 1 percent.

Meanwhile, the observers also said 4042 and 46-inch Full HD edge-lit LED TV panels have also dropped by US$1 and are likely to maintain that drop throughout the first quarter.

5G WiFi Technology Broadcom Corporation (BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, announced LG Electronics has chosen Broadcom's 5G WiFi technology, based on the IEEE 802.11ac standard, for use in select 2013 LG digital TV models. Energy Industry Hitachi Water Treatment Japanese firm Hitachi announced that a consortium comprising Hitachi and Hyflux had signed an agreement with Dahej Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for a sea-water desalination project in Gujarat.

ClipperCreek Zigbee Smart Meters A joint project between leading EV charging station provider ClipperCreek and proven ZigBee product manufacturer Smartenit has resulted in the first commercially available device that can connect to smart meters in a home area network (HAN). The project was sponsored by a major electric utility and a pilot rollout is expected to be completed in the first half of 2013. The EV charging station uses the Smartenit ZOE-EVC, a ZigBee SEP 1.1 certified module. The use of this module presents many advantages to the charging station design, including the ability to measure the charging profile and control the charging schedule. This gives the station additional intelligence in managing the various charging patterns presented by the myriad electric vehicles available now and in the future.
