Smart Pro / MDTS II Addendum (CPU rev C, VX4.00-0) v1.0

About this addendum

This addendum is an addition to the Smart Pro and Smart Pro Pac manuals. It details changes in the Smart Pro design that make it operate better under severe conditions. The firmware and hardware changes affect where non-volatile storage of variable values takes place, and how those values are re-loaded on power up of the Smart Pro.

Will this change affect you?

This change will affect you if any of the following are true: On an existing Smart Pro, you are replacing an older version of the CPU board with CPU Rev C or greater. On an existing Smart Pro, you are replacing an older version of the firmware with VX4.00-0 or greater. Your new Smart Pro or Pro Pac was shipped after mm/dd/97.

Parts identification
To identify the CPU board and firmware versions, see the following:

Firmware identification
On the CPU circuit board (mounted inside the door of the Smart Pro), the chips in sockets U24 and U25 are labeled with a sticker displaying the firmware version. Screen 010 on the Smart Pro displays the firmware version. You can access Screen 010 by entering the screen number on the Smart Pro keypad.

CPU board identification

The CPU board revision that is described in this addendum is Revision C or greater. You can identify it by reading the revision number silk-screened on the circuit board and by checking for the presence of a jumper JP17 under the EEPROM in socket U26.

CPU board Rev C changes

The revision C of the CPU board added an EEPROM writeprotect jumper (JP17). When the jumper is removed (or stored on only one pin of JP17), the CPU board is in writeprotect mode; it prevents information being written to the EEPROM. Note, the write-protect mode does not prevent information from being downloaded from the EEPROM to RAM.

Before performing an Upload to EEPROM you must install the write-protect jumper, otherwise the upload will not be successful. Note Always remove the write-protect jumper when finished with the EEPROM upload. This protects the information stored in the EEPROM from accidental corruption. Maintaining good data in the EEPROM is critical to the proper functioning of the Smart Pro.

Firmware VX4.00-0 changes

Prior to firmware VX4.00-0, the variable values were stored in battery-backed RAM. In certain severe conditions, the battery-backed RAM could be corrupted. To restore valid values, an "Upload from EEPROM" function was required. Starting with version VX4.00-0, the software loads the variable values from the EEPROM on power-up, because the EEPROM is more secure (especially if the write-protect jumper hardware is used). Also, at critical points in the Smart Pro user interface screens, the user is prompted to upload the memory to EEPROM (for example during the calibration procedure.) The following figures illustrate the relationship between the RAM and EEPROM in versions 3.xx-x and 4.xx-x firmware. Note the values are loaded from the EEPROM on power-up in versions 4.xx-x, and that the RAM is automatically checked for corruption.

However, if changes to variable values are made outside of the screen tree structure (for example, directly through the 500-level screens), the changes are not automatically stored in the EEPROM.

Automatic corruption check

An automatic corruption check was added in version VX4.00-0 (and later) firmware. The Smart Pro continually checks the RAM for corruption, and if corruption is found, automatically downloads the EEPROM values to RAM and re-starts the Smart Pro. This prevents the use of corrupted values during operation of the Smart Pro, but it also

necessitates having correct values in the EEPROM. (See below). Note After making any changes in the Smart Pro software that you want to keep, perform an Upload to EEPROM function. (See below for instructions.) This will ensure an accurate backup of the values, and ensure the proper values are loaded on power-up. To upload the memory to the EEPROM, use the following procedure: 1. Place the write-protect jumper across the pins (JP17) on the Smart Pro CPU board, if the board is Rev C or later. 2. In the Smart Pro, enter the password to access security level 2. 3. From Main Menu 2 of 2, select Setup Gage 4. This takes you to Screen 014 Setup 1 of 4. Select Up/Down Load Memory 5. This takes you to Screen 310 Memory Backup. Select EEPROM Transfers 6. Screen 311 provides a message that you should verify there is an EEPROM chip in socket U26. Press Help to read the message, or Enter to continue. 7. This takes you to Screen 100 EEPROM Service. Select Copy RAM to EEPROM 8. At Screen 102 RAM to EEPROM, press 1, then Enter to upload the values. If the write-protect jumper is not installed, you will get the message Error Status 1 and an alarm will be activated (an A will blink in the upper right corner). Checking the current alarm status on Screen 006 will show EEPROM upload error detected. If the upload is successful, the message Error Status 0 will be displayed. 9. To set the EEPROM in write-protect mode, remove the jumper from pins (JP17) on the Smart Pro CPU board, if the board is Rev C or later. p
