Wrestlers grapple with proper diet in-season

restling isnt just a sport, its a lifestyle. For proof, look no further than the difference between what a wrestler eats for lunch during the offseason and what he consumes if anything at all during the season. Maintaining a certain weight is a way of life for high school wrestlers and most have become experts in rationing portions and the timing of their meals. Few wrestlers agree completely on the proper way to diet throughout the season. Some opt for smaller portions of what they normally eat while others go for low-fat foods they only consume between December and March. I dont eat lunch, I usually eat a big breakfast and that fills me up for the whole day, said St. Augustines Tom Gattinella, who wrestles at 120 pounds. Then when I get home, I usually eat steak, chicken, and a lot of water. Everything is portioned. I usually eat the same meals, just portioned out. Most wrestlers famously twiddle their thumbs during lunch while the season is in high gear. Typically, eating during the day is a luxury reserved for upper weights who arent cutting weight or times when a match is still a few days away. If its lunch, I just make it fruit, itll fill me up, it hydrates me too, Gattinella said. Gattinella, who stands 5-foot, 5-inches, said its a good idea to eat nutritious food, rather than eating a lot then working extra hard to work it off. Fast food, itll sit in your stomach and youre going to wrestle bad, Gattinella said. Thats why I feel like if I get a good dinner, it fuels me for the rest of the day and the next day. While hes smart about what he eats to maintain

Vinelands Zach Nealis bites into an apple before a recent practice. Fruits are a popular choice for wrestlers watching their weight during the season. STAFF PHOTO/CHARLES J. OLSON used to it and its not that bad, Sentman said. You dont fluctuate a lot of weight, you only go up or down a few pounds. During the season, Sentman said he misses whats normally a staple in his diet Chinese food. He replaces it with something significantly more American. Every single day for lunch I eat peanut butter and jelly, Sentman said. Not everyone has a drastically different diet during the winter months though. Even when I was cutting a lot of weight, I still ate what I wanted, Buena senior 126-pounder Billy Ward said. Maybe a little less or smaller portions. Ward said the key to maintaining weight is more about shedding the pounds in the wrestling room and less about starving in the hours before weigh-ins. Since wrestling after fasting for 24 hours just to make weight isnt ideal, Ward suggests getting down earlier, then maintaining. A lot of it is how much youre working out and how much youre sweating, Ward said. I have a weight I want to be the day before a match. If youre down earlier in the week, its nice. The Mat Pack asked about wrestlers favorite in-season snack foods and fruits were the popular choice.

THE INSIDE STUFF
Delsea Regional High Schools Dylan Dobzanski is currently undefeated (24-0) and garnering interest from college coaches. He played just one season of high school football and helped the Crusaders win a state title, and hes getting scholarship offers for that sport too. But for now hes focused on helping Delsea reach the Group II state finals and win a title. He recently spoke to The Mat Pack about wrestling and football. QUESTION: You played football for the first time in high school this past fall, did that help you out with wrestling or set you back at all? A: A little bit of both in a sense, it got me into some sort of shape but it was also bad because I havent had any athletic breaks since the beginning of summer, my body is starting to wear down a little bit. (But) Its definitely been a great ride, Im glad I came out and played this year. Q: Do you regret not playing football sooner? A: Not really, because I had never been that big. Freshman year, I wrestled 119, I was 5foot-2. Q: Which sport would you like to pursue in college? A: I think wrestling. Its close to my heart. And its 10 times more rewarding because of all the hard work I put in my whole life. Theres nothing like the feeling of winning a match. Q: Being undefeated this far into the season, does it add confidence or pressure? A: I dont think it adds that much pressure, but it does give me confidence knowing I havent lost yet because I have wrestled some tough kids at the Brick tournament. We wrestled Bound Brook and St. Peters (Prep). I dont think its added

that much pressure because I wanted to do this good my senior year, and Ive exceeded all my expectations. Theres not going to be that much pressure for me until I get to the state tournament, I think. Q: Do you think this team has a better chance at getting over the hump and winning a state title this year as opposed to last year? A: Its tough because last year we had a lot of great wrestlers (like Curt Delia). He was a great leader, he always pushed us. I think we have another great chance this year to make it and win the whole thing. I think High Point is beatable. We saw them at Brick, they have holes, we have holes, everybody has holes. I think we have a good shot at winning it this year, because we put in so much hard work and we deserve it. Q: How do you feel about wrestling anywhere from 170 to 195? A: My coaches always make fun of me when I wrestle 195. Its tough wrestling bigger kids because theyre stronger, but theyre a lot slower. Ill wrestle 95 and get the job done. Ill do whatever I need to do for my team. I definitely enjoy wrestling 70 and 82 a lot more, but I do what I have to do. Q: Whats your Super Bowl prediction? A: I want to say the Ravens, 17-13, I hope they win because of Ray Lewis.
