Truth in the Workplace (Part 2): The Joseph Model

As promised: Part 2 of the Work Matters presentation by Mr. Willy Kotiuga. Enjoy!! Everything that we do is a gift to God, whether it be preaching, teaching, designing, cooking, cleaning, creating spreadsheets or operating machines. All work has dignity, and all our work should reflect excellence that is a worthy offering acceptable to God. We must educate church members on how to see work as their calling from God, and help clergy to see the mission possibilities in the workplace. We all need to be committed to ongoing transformation through a daily walk with God. As we plant gospel seeds, there are many variables outside our control, impeding growth. After years of trying to invite coworkers to join me on a faith journey, I realized that words and a personal example were not enough. Now I start the discipling process from the moment someone comes into my sphere of influence. As the director of a company, I have a responsibility to create an environment which is conducive to creating an excellent product and helping people attain their highest potential. The values driving our work environment include: accountability, responsibility, the pursuit of excellence, teamwork, a learning environment, risk-taking, forgiveness, support and celebration. These values, desirable professionally, also help people embark on a faith journey. They are an integral part of making good disciples. Accountability reinforces that in all areas of life we are accountable to a higher authority. Responsibility reinforces that we should work through difficulties to meet obligations and commitments. Pursuit of Excellence motivates people to do better than they have done in the past, and better than others are used to doing. A Learning Environment stimulates discussion and encourages exploration to discover more about life. Risk-taking helps staff learn to step out of their comfort zone. Forgiveness is offered to those who make mistakes, or whose risks have not turned out to be successful. Support enables people to move in confidence to the next level of understanding and knowledge. Celebration is appropriate for the whole team as we share in one anothers successes. This is the sacred environment in which I live at my workplace. For others not in managerial positions, the holy ground may be limited to ones shared workspace, desk or workbench. For some, a sacred workplace is the lunchtime Bible study once a week. For others, it could be coffee breaks and/or lunchtimes filled with discussions (not monologues) about life issues. Ultimately, what transforms the secular to sacred is the presence of God and when God is present, changes take place. We are all called to be agents of change. If Joseph could do it as a slave and as a prisoner, there is no reason why we cannot transform our sphere of influence into holy ground. Everything you wanted to know about the Mass but were afraid to ask:
At the weekend Masses of February 9th (4 PM) and 10th (8:30 and 11:00), Fr. Raymond will lead the congregation through a Teaching Mass. We will use shorter versions of the readings and a very brief homily, and take some time to explain the significance of each of the major parts of the Eucharistic Liturgy, so as to better understand the connections between liturgy and life. Let us take advantage of this Year of Faith to deepen our grasp of the sacred mystery we celebrate. All are welcome!
