Oil prices have shown volatility over the years, and the industry faces some uncertainty in the short term. However, with sustained demand for energy from both the major and emerging economies, the long-term outlook for the industry remains positive. Today, Singapore is host to some of the worlds largest oil rig builders such as Keppel and Sembcorp Marine, which provide critical marine and offshore engineering activities in the assembly and maintenance of FPSO conversions, ship repairs, offshore support vessels and jack-up rigs. Over the years, companies in Singapore have managed to build up quality ship repair capabilities as well as know-how in the construction of oil rigs. Approximately 70 per cent of the worlds jack-up rigs used for oil exploration and drilling are produced here. As a major transshipment port, Singapore has also attracted upstream and downstream oil & gas players to establish their production, procurement and supply chain management base here.
