This is the preparation material for an English conversation lesson about the environment and nature. It deals with issues such as global warming, climate change and deforestation. It contains a list of advanced English vocabulary relating to the environment, common idioms and expressions we might use when discussing in this subject and a list of conversation questions relating to nature and the environment. Grammar Point We need to be careful about the use of the definite article the when discussing features of the environment. Here is a list of the occasions where we do and do not use the definite article before the noun: Occasions where we use the definite article Countries which are in a plural form e.g. The United States, The Bahamas. Advanced English vocabulary related to the environment Atmosphere the mixture of gases that surround the Earth Biodegradable materials and chemicals that are biodegradable are changed naturally by bacteria into substances that do not harm the environment Catastrophe a terrible event in which there is a lot of destruction, suffering or death Contaminate to make a place or substance dirty or harmful by putting something such as chemicals or poison in it. Conservation the protection of natural things such as animals, plants, forests etc. to prevent them being spoiled or destroyed.

Idioms we might use when discussing the environment A recipe for disaster If you refer to a plan or an idea as a recipe for disaster, you think it is likely to produce bad results. No quick fix To say that there is no quick fix to a problem means that there is no simple solution. A race against time If someone is in a race against time, they have to work very quickly in order to do or finish something before a certain time. Ripple effect When an action has an effect on something, which in turn affects something else, it is said to have a ripple effect.
