PROCEDURE FOR USING SHELL WATER DETECTOR

The Shell Water Detector Capsule determines the presence of finely dispersed / suspended water in Jet Fuel at concentrations less than those normally detectale ( 15 ppm ) by visual examinations. Examine the bottom of the tube to ensure the capsules have not passed their expiry date. 5 ml syringe - syringe operates freely and nozzle not damaged ( Supplied with Capsule ) Ensure the closed circuit jar is clean and free from water. Ensure the SWD syringe adopter is clean and free from water. Remove the capsule from the tube . Handle carefully and do not touch or allow any moisture on to the yellow paper of the capsule. Close the capsule tube to avoid contamination of other capsules at ambient humidity. Check the yellow paper for clarity, if not discard and use another capsule. Fit the capsule to the syringe with the plunger in the closed position. Draw sample in the closed circuit sampler and check for its clear and bright procedure. Unwind the syringe adopter and Place the syringe with the capsule into the syringe adopter with its collar engaged on to the slot provided. Slowly rotate the syringe adopter clockwise so that the capsule presses the fuel bleed point. Pull the plunger to draw 5 ml of fuel sample into the syringe. Unwind the syringe adopter and withdraw the syringe from the adopter. Examine the capsule immediately for any change of colour in the centre wetted area of the capsule.

RESULT : 1. 2. If there is no colour change, the sample is acceptable. The colour of the centre change to slight yellow/green at very low dispersed water concentrations with the chan ge to green becoming progressively more noticeable with increasing water content. A few green speckles or a slight change in colour would be recorded as a TRACE, a distinct colour change woud be recorded as SUSPENDED WATER. After sampling dispose of the capsule safely. It should be used ONCE only. Empty the contents of the syringe back into the dump tank. Complete the documentation.

NOTE : The life of unused Shell Water Detector capsule is NINE months from the time of manufacture. The expiry month and year is marked on the bottom of each tube of capsules. Unused capsules should be stored in their container with the cap screwed tightly to prevent discoloration by humidity.
