Thewaytosettletheskepticismaboutallegedconnectionsbetweenhoroscopesandhumanactionsisclear.Findagroup ofpeoplewhohaveperformedsomespecificaction,obtaintheirbirthinformation(birthdate,birthtime,andbirthlocation), andseeifanyobjectivehoroscopefeaturesoccurinthisgroupbymorethanrandomchanceincomparisontoacontrol group.Thereareseveralproblemshere: Mostastrologerseitherdon'tknowhowtodoresearchorhavenointerestinit. Thosewhoareinterestedusuallyhaveneitherthetimenormoney.Andtherearefew,veryfew,researchgrantsavailablefor astrologicalresearch,andthosethatareavailablearesmall. Mostscientistssimplydismissastrologyorhavenointerestindoingastudy. Thefewscientistswhodoresearchstudiesknownothingaboutastrology.Asaresult,theytestassertionsthatno astrologerevermadeandtherebycommitthe"strawmanfallacy." Still,thisresearchmustbedone.Anecdotalevidenceisinsufficientasproofandtheresponsibilityofdemonstratingthat astrologyisvalidbelongstoastrologers.Inotherwords,thepeoplewholistentowhatyousaydon'thavetoprovethatitis true.That'syourjob. Caveat: Iamnotclaimingthatthefollowingpaperis"proof"ofastrology.Itclearlyisnot.Itis,however,alogicalfirststepinthe testingprocess.Hypothesishunting(explainedbelow)isalegitimateprocedureforfindingfactorswhichmaybetested furtheronnewbatchesofdata. TestProposal: Thetestproposedhereisasfollows:wewillexaminethetimedhoroscopesofpeoplewhohaveperformedaspecificact, inthiscasemurder,andseeifangularseparationbetweencertainpointsonthehoroscopewheeloccurbymorethan randomchance.Butthereareseveralquestionsthathavetobeansweredfirst. Whoisamurderer? Doweincludesoldiersandpoliceofficerswhokillinthelineofduty?Howaboutsomeonewhokillsoutofnegligence, suchasadrunkdriver?Howaboutanotherwisepeacefulpersonwhokillsinselfdefense?Theproblemhereisoneof motivation.Killingdonedeliberately(murderinthe1stor2nddegree,ormanslaughter,wherethereisanintenttoinjure)is differentfromthatdoneaccidentally(negligence)orwherethereisnootherchoice(selfdefenseorintimeofwar).This studywillbelimitedtothosewhodeliberatelykillorwhokillwhileintendingtootherwisecauseharm. Butevenhere,therearedifferences.Cansomeonewhogetsangryonedayandkillstheirspousebeclassifiedwitha serialkillerorwiththe"quietperson"whosuddenlygoesberserkandkillsmanypeopleatonce?Forthisreason,the murderersareseparatedintothreegroups:

Singlemurderers.Thosewhokilledonlyoneperson. Serialkillers.Thosewhokilledseveralpeopleoneafteranother. Massmurderers.Thosewhokilledseveralpeopleatonetime.

Therearestillproblemshere.Supposesomeonecomeshomeonedayandfindstheirspouseinbedwithsomeoneelse. Iftheytakeagunandkilleitherthespouseorthelover,theyareasinglemurderer.Butwhatiftheykillboth?Doweclassify themasamultiplemurderer?Istheirmotivationthatdifferentfromthepersonwhokillsjustone? Andthenthereare"spreekillers"likeAndrewCunanin.Theykillpeopleoneaftertheother,butnotallatonce.Unlikeserial killers,theydon'ttrytocoverup.Andtheykillduringarelativelyshortspanoftime.Theyfallinbetweenmassmurderersand serialkillers. Evenamongserialkillerstherearedifferences.Some,likeTedBundyandJohnGacy,killduringsexualencounters. Others,likeDavidBerkowitz,the"sonofSam"killer,simplykill.RichardRamirez,the"nightstalker",claimedtokillforSatan. KennethKimesandDortheaMontalvokilledformoney.JefferyDahmercookedandatehisvictims.Still,themainmotivation forallofthemwouldseemtobetheactofmurderitself,so,initiallyatleast,killersasdiverseasthesecouldbegrouped together. SettingUptheGroups: Inthisstudy,murderersweredividedintothreegroups:singlemurderers(M),serialkillers(S),andmassmurderers(MM). Eachgroupwasthendividedintosubgroupsoftwentyeach.Therewerelessthan20massmurderers,sotheywereput asideuntildataonmorecasescouldbeobtained. SettingUptheControlGroups: Thecontrolgroupswerecomputergeneratedwiththe"Jigsaw"researchprogram.Onegroupofcontrolhoroscopeswas generatedforeachbatchofmurderhoroscopes.Eachcontrolchartwassetupforthesameyearandsamelocationasthe correspondingchartofamurderer.Controlswerelabeledwiththeletter"C."Forinstance,thecontrolgroupforthefirst groupofsinglemurderers(M1)waslabeledCM1thecontrolgroupforthefirstgroupofserialkillers(S1)waslabeledCS1 etc. WhyUseComputergeneratedHoroscopes? Wouldn'titbebettertousehoroscopesofactualpeopletakenfromthegeneralpopulation?Firstofall,itwouldbe extremelydifficulttomakeacontrolgroupofpeoplebornthesameyearandinthesameplaceaseachmurderer.More importantly,whatwouldbethedifferencestatisticallybetweenagroupofcomputergeneratedhoroscopesandthosetaken randomlyfromthegeneralpopulation?Nonewhatsoever.Acomputergeneratedcontrolgroupshouldyieldthesame statisticalresultasarandomgrouptakenfromthegeneralpopulation. SpecificsoftheTestItself: Theobjectivefeatureofthehoroscopesthatwillbeanalyzedistheangularseparationbetweenplanetsandtheangular separationbetweenplanetsandcertainpointsinthechartsthatastrologersclaimtobesignificant.Inaddition,the particulardegreesofthezodiacwillbeexaminedtoseeifanyappearbymorethanrandomchance. Backin1998,IhadlunchwithMichaelShermer,theeditorofSkepticmagazine.Hesaidhehadneverheardofangular separationbeingusedinastrologybeforeandaskedwhenastrologersstarteddoingit."Over2,000yearsago"Ireplied. "ThetechniquegoesbackatleasttoClaudiusPtolemy."Itwouldbehelpfulifskepticslearnedsomethingaboutastrology andastrologicaltechniquesbeforereachingconclusionsaboutitsvalidity.But,asImentionedabove,itistheresponsibility ofastrologerstoprovidetheevidence. Theastrologicaltermforangularseparationis"aspects."Thereareseveralaspectsreferredtoas"Major."Theseare anglesof0,60,90,120,and180degrees.The60and120degree(calledthesextileandtrinerespectively)aspectsare saidtohavea"soft"effectandareallegedtobebeneficial.Theanglesof0,90,and180degreesarecalled"hard"aspects andareclaimedtobeassociatedwithproblemsanddysfunctionsinthelife.Sinceweareexaminingthehoroscopesof murderers,adysfunctionalacttosaytheleast,theobviousplacetostartwouldbewiththehardaspects. Aspectsdon'thavetobeexact.Astrologersallowan"orbofinfluence"ofafewdegreesoneitherside.Howmuch? Regrettably,therehasbeennostatisticalresearchinthisarea.Orbsizecanvarywithcircumstances,andevenwiththe astrologer.Therearethosewhoalloworbsofuptoeightdegrees.Tobesafe,theorbsusedinthisstudyhavebeenseton thesmallersideoftherange.Theorbsizefortheconjunction(the0degreeaspect)andtheopposition(the180degree aspect)weresetfor+or5degrees.Theorbforthesquare(the90degreeaspect)wassetat+or4degrees.

Nowwhatisthechanceofanytwoplanetsmakinga"hard"aspectifweusetheaboveorbs?Well,pictureastationarypoint onacircle.Ifthereisasecondpointmovingaroundthecircleatauniformrate,whatarethechancesofthatsecondpoint makingahardaspectwiththefirst? Thatsecondpointwillmakeahardaspectwiththefirstifitlandsinanyofthezonesaroundtheaspectpoints.Inother words,ifitlandswithin5degreesofthefirstpoint,itwillmakeaconjunction.Ifitlandswithinfivedegreesoftheopposite point,itwillmakeanopposition.Andifitlandswithinfourdegreesofeithersquarepoint(therearetwopossiblewaysto havea90degreeaspecttotheleftortotherightofthefirstpoint)itwillmakeasquare.Addingupallofthesezones(5+5)+ (5+5)+(4+4)+(4+4)=36 wegetthatthereare36possibledegreesonthatcirclewherethesecondpointcanlandandmakeahardaspectwiththe first.Sincethereare360degreesinacircle,theoddsofthesecondpointmakinganhardaspectwiththefirstpointis 36/360or0.1whichis10%. Butplanetarymotionisnotuniform.Won'tthatthrowthecalculationsoff?Notifwetakebirthdatesoveralongenoughtime span.Thefluctuationsevenoutinthelonghaul.EvenforaplanetlikeNeptune,whichtakesover160yearstomakeone orbit?Inthatcase,Neptuneismovingsoslowlythatitcanbeconsideredstationarycomparedtothefastermovingplanets. Buthowaboutaspectsthattheouterplanetsmaketoeachother?Theystayinforceforsolongthattheyappearinthe horoscopesofentiregenerations.NeptuneandPluto,forexample,madeanaspectofapproximately60degreesfor decadesafter1943.Forthisreason,aspectsouterplanetsmakewitheachotherwillnotbecoveredinthisstudy. Sinceeveryonehasa10%chanceofhavinganyoneaspect,itshouldbeobviousthatnooneaspectcouldbetheonly factorincasesofmurder.However,ifthereisanastrologicaleffect,thereshouldbesomeaspectsthatwouldincreasethe tendencytowardsmurderousbehavior.Thattendencyshouldbedetectablebystatisticaltechniques.Thosewhohave committedmurdershouldhavecertainaspectsoccurringintheirnatalhoroscopesbymorethanwouldbeexpectedby randomchance. Couldtherebeadifferencebetweenindividualangles?Inotherwords,eventhoughtheanglesof0,90,and180degrees areallegedtohavesimilareffects,couldoneofthempredominateinsomecases?Thatissomethingthatwouldalsohave tobechecked.Theoddsofhavingeitheraconjunctionoroppositionoccurbyrandomchancewouldbe1/36.Forthe90 degreeangle(thesquare)theoddswouldbe16/360(rememberthattherearealwaystwopossible90degreeangles, clockwiseandcounterclockwise)or2/45. Howaboutotherfactors?Couldcertaindegreesofthezodiac,forinstance,playarole?Theoddsofanyplanetorother pointinahoroscopeappearinginoneparticulardegreeofthezodiacare1/360.Usinganorbof+oronedegree,this becomes1/180.Itmustberememberedthateveryplanetorpointmustappearsomewhereinthechart.Whatwehaveto lookforarerepeats,oneplanetorpointappearinginaparticulardegreebymorethanthetheoreticaloddsof1/180.Once again,itispossibleforthethreeouterplanetstostayinaparticulardegreeformonths.Forthisreason,cautionmustbe exercisedwhenexaminingouterplanetdegreeplacement. AccordingtoAstrology,WhatAspectsWouldWeExpecttoFind? AspectstoMars,ofcourse.Marsissaidtobetheplanetofactionandaggression.Negatively,thatwouldbeanindicatorof violence.Plutointensifieswhateverittouchesanditissupposedtobetherulerofdeath.Earlyupbringingcouldbeafactor, and,inthehoroscope,thatwouldbeinfluencedbytheplacementoftheMoon.Buthastherebeenanypreviousworkdone onthistopic?

PreviousStudiesofMurderintheAstrologicalLiterature: Thefirstsourcehereis"Astropsychiatry"byHarryDarling,M.D.,andRuthHaleOliver,CSAPress,1973.Theyclaimedto havefoundthefollowingaspectsinthehoroscopesofmurderers: "IbelievethatthemidpointofMarswithSaturn,UranusorNeptune,whenoccupiedbyanatalplanet,givesatendencyto violence,thatis,tocommitviolenceortobeitsrecipient.ThemidpointofMars/Saturncoarsensandmakescruel,the midpointofMars/Uranusexcitesandmakeserraticandaggressive,andthatofMars/Neptunecreateshysteria, sensationalismandsometimesfanaticism,aswellasaggression."(Pg.145). AlsomentionedwerethemidpointsofVenuswitheitherSaturnorUranus. Lessthan10casesofthehoroscopesofmurdererswerelisted.Nomentionwasmadeofcontrolgroupsorofaspectsthat weretestedandgavenegativeresults. Thesecondsourceis"DestinedforMurder:ProfilesofSixSerialKillers"bySandraHarrisonYoungandEdnaRowland, LlewellynPublications,1995.Whilethecaseswerediscussedindetail,thenumberexaminedwasnowherenear statisticallysignificant,and,onceagain,therewerenocontrolgroups.Itshouldbestatedthatuntilrecently,obtaining

accuratebirthdataforastatisticallysignificantnumberofcaseswasextremelydifficultandtimeconsuming.For astrologers,itwaseitherdoanecdotalresearchornoneatall. Attheendofthebook,possibleastrologicalfactorsinthehoroscopesofmurdererswerementioned. "Planetaryaspectsandplacements,andtherulersofthefollowinghouses,shouldalsobeexaminedcarefully:the8th house(whichrulesdeathandsexualpreferences)the4thhouse(whichrulesourfamilyheritageandendings,including theendoflife)andthe12thhouse.(The12thhouserulesimprisonmentorincarcerationinanyinstitutionwherewemay bedeprivedofourfreedom.Thisissometimesreferredtoas'thehouseofselfundoing.')"(DestinedForMurder:Pg.179). "Intheexaminationofthechartsofcriminalsormassmurdererssuchasthosedescribedinthisbook,wecan'toverlook theimportanceofmidpoints.Althoughallmidpointsarevitallyimportant,thefollowingcanbeclassifiedaskeyincasesof murderorcrime:theMars/Saturnmidpoint(death)Mars/Pluto(murder)Saturn/Pluto(crueltyorviolentassault)andthe Mars/Uranusmidpoint(accidentproneness).TheSun/PlutoorMarsmidpointsareequallyimportantinindicatinga potentialforviolence,andtheMoon/Saturnmidpointshouldbealsonoted,sinceitoftenindicatesanunnaturaldependency ononeoftheparentsbeginninginearlychildhood.Occupiedmidpointsshouldbegivenspecialattention,aswellasthose aspectingchartanglesorcuspsofangularhouses."(Pg.180). HypothesisHunting: Nopreviousstudycited"negative"outcomes,horoscopefeaturesthatgavearesultnogreaterthanrandomchanceor, alternately,thatshowednodifferencefromacontrolgroup.Nordidanypreviousstudyclaimtobecomplete.Couldtherebe otheraspectsouttherethatgivepositiveresults?Theonlywaytodoathoroughjobistodosome"hypothesishunting", checkingeverythingintheinitialsampletoseewhatisthere. Nowitiscommonsensethatthisprocedurehastogivesomeresult,anditispossibleforonesampletohaveone particularaspectgiveaveryhighresultbyrandomchancealone.Thekey,however,isreproducibility.Aslongasenough casesareheldinreservetosothattheinitialresultscanberetestedandverified(orfalsified),hypothesishuntingisavalid procedure. Nowhowisthetestitselftoberun? TestParameters: Asmentionedabove,thecasesweredividedintogroupsof20.Anindividualgroupofthissizeistoosmalltorun meaningfulstatisticaltests.Forthisreason,theresultsfromseveralgroupsweretotaled.Thetestswereruninitiallyonthe totalsfromfourgroups.Aminimumstandardwassetarbitrarily.Anaspecthadtoappearatleast50%aboverandom chancetobeconsideredsignificant. Forexample,therandomchanceresultis10%.For80cases,thatmeans8"hits."Tobeconsideredsignificant,aparticular aspectwouldhavetoappearatleast12timesoutof80cases. TestResults,PhaseOne: Aspectswererunforthefollowinggroups:M1,M2,M3,andS1.Thisinitialphaseinvolvedsome"hypothesishunting"as wellasexaminationofcombinationsthatwouldbe"expected"togivepositiveresults.InPhaseTwo,thesametestswereto berunongroupS2andtheresultstotaled.InPhaseThree,thesametestswouldberunongroupS3andthetotals tabulated. ThefollowingresultswereobtainedforPhaseOne:

[Appendix:AllTables&Chartsusedtoperformthisresearch] TherewerenostressaspectsbetweentheSunandanyplanet.Thereweretwo"hits"tomidpoints.TheMoonhadeight "hits."AstrologersallegethattheSunhastodowith"ego",outwardpersonality,andrelationswiththefatherandmale authorityfigures,whiletheMoonindicatesone'sfeelings,habits,"instincts",earlynurturing,andrelationswiththemother. AstressaspectbetweentheMoonandMarsisnotsurprising.Marsisallegedlyaggressionandviolenceandastress aspecttotheMoonwouldshowangerdirectedtowardswomen,startingwiththemother.MassmurdererRichardSpeck,for example,whokilledeightstudentnurses,hadtheMoonsquareMars.(Hischartisnotincludedhereashewasneithera singlemurderernoraserialkiller).Onceagain,letmeemphasizethattheseaspectswillbepossessedby10%ofthe generalpopulation.Whatwearelookingforarethoseaspectswhichoccuratleast50%abovethenumberpredictedby randomchance.Ifthereistobean"astrologicaleffect"atall,itwillbestatisticalandnotaonetoonecorrespondence.And therewouldbeseveralaspectsinvolved,notjustone. StressaspectsfromtheMoontoVenusaremoreofasurprise.Afterall,inastrologyVenusallegedlyaffectspleasureand comfort.However,ourfirstexperiencesofthesecomefromourrelationshipwithourmothers.Anyproblemsatthatearly stagecouldindicatetroublelaterinlife. Inastrology,Mercuryissaidtoruleconsciousthoughtandtheabilitytocommunicate.TherewerenoaspectsofMercury thatgavepositiveresults. Venusgavetwomorehits(besidesitsaspecttotheMoon,alreadycovered).OnewastoMars(violence).Stressaspects betweenVenusandMarsallegedlyareassociatedwithdifficultiesinexpressingaffectionandpassion.Theotherisa stressaspectbetweenVenusandtheplanetthatrulesthefirsthouse(itmadenodifferencewhichplanethappenedtorule thefirsthouse).Again,thiscouldindicatedifficultyinbothgivingandreceivingpleasureandaffection. Sinceearlynurturingisknowntohaveastrongeffectonsubsequentbehavior,thenextquestiontoaskis:arethereother thingsinthehoroscopethataresupposedtoaffectit?Inastrology,theMoonisnottheonlyallegedindicatorofnurturing. TheasteroidCeresisalsoclaimedtohaveaneffect.Ceresaspectswouldbethenextplacetolook.Ceresstressaspects gavepositiveresultswithJupiterandtheMars/Saturnmidpoint.Theconnectionwiththatmidpointisnotsurprising,since Mars/Saturnhasareputationforbrutality.Jupiter,however,expandsthings.Toomuchnurturing?Perhapstoomuchofthe wrongkindofnurturing,sincewearelookingatstressfulaspectshere.Orcoulditindicateanexcessiveneedfornurturing? Furtherstudyiscertainlyindicatedhere. TheVenus/Ceresmidpointalsogaveresults.Venus/Cereswouldallegedlyshowpleasurablenurturing,orone'sabilityto experiencepleasurefromnurturing.ThatmidpointgavestrongpositiveresultswhenconfiguredwithMars(violence), Jupiter(excess)andSaturn(deprivation). Mars/Jupiterstressaspectsaresupposedtogiveavolatiletemper.Thisalsogaveresults.Nosurprisehere.The Moon/Marsconnectionwasalreadymentioned.MarsconfiguredwiththeMoon'sNodesshowedpositiveresultsaswell. ThenodesarethepointswhereanorbitcrossestheplaneoftheEarth'sorbit. TheasteroidJunogavearesultforthePluto/Nodemidpoint.DemetraGeorgeinherbook"AsteroidGoddesses,claimsthat Juno"representsourcapacityformeaningfulrelationship"andthatitshoroscopeplacement"describesthewaysin whichwefacetheissuesofcompatibility,receptivitytoothers,mutualsharing,trust,jealousy,possessiveness,andpower struggles"(pg.168).Pluto,however,istheplanetofbothextremesanddeath.Ittoohasaconnectionwithpowerstruggles. AndtheMoon'sNodedoeshaveaconnectionwithemotion.Murderis,afterall,aboutpower. JupitergavenoresultswithSaturnorChiron,ortheouterplanets.However,therewerepositivesforthefollowing midpoints:Venus/Ceres(mentionedearlier),Venus/Uranus,Venus/Neptune,Mars/Uranus,Saturn/Pluto,andPluto/Node. Venus/UranusandMars/UranusaretwoofthemidpointsmentionedbyDarlingandOliverin"Astropsychiatry." Venus/Uranushastodowithsuddensurgesofamorousfeelingaswellasaffectionexpressedinanunusualorbizarre fashion.Itisalsoassociatedwithrapidchangesinthelevelofbloodsugar.ThenegativeeffectofMars/Uranusisclaimed tobeassociatedwithsuddenoutburstsoftemper.TheallegedeffectofJupiteristo"expand"whateveritcontacts.These combinationsinthehoroscopesofmurderersarenosurprise. NeitherarethestressfulaspectsofJupitertoSaturn/PlutoorPluto/Node.Plutoisknown(anecdotally)toactlikesortofa superMars,butismoreinternalandbrooding.Thiswouldmeanthat,potentiallyatleast,Saturn/Plutocouldhave similaritiestoSaturn/Mars,apointofbrutality.The(alleged)effectofJupitertoexpandthingscouldbringoutthenegative sideofSaturn/Pluto.AsforPluto/Node,wehavealreadyseenitgiveapositiveresultwithMars(action)soitisnot unexpectedforthe(alleged)effectofJupitertoexpandthingstohavesimilarresults. ThereseemstobealotofactivityforSaturnwithvariousmidpointsofVenus.Inseveralcases,theresultswereoverthe

50%minimum.Forinstance,SaturngaveastrongpositivewiththeVenus/Chironmidpoint.Venus/Chironisoneofthe placeswherewecanhavetroubleexperiencingpleasure.Thiswouldbeaproblemthatwouldtendtolinger.Saturnalso showspositiveresultswheninaspecttoVenus/Ceres(pleasurereceivedfromnurturing).Accordingtoastrology,Saturn restrictsandinhibitsthings.Thisdoesnotnecessarilymeanthattherewasnopleasurefromearlynurturing.Itcouldalso indicatealessenedabilitytoacceptnurturing.Inanyevent,ifthechilddidnotperceivesufficientnurturing,therecouldeasily berepercussionslaterinlife. AstrologyallegesthattheeffectofUranusistoexcite,tomakerestless,tocauseustodesirechange,andincreaseour attractiontoanythingunusualorbizarre.UranusgavepositiveresultswiththeMoon/Marsmidpoint(Moon=emotions, Mars=anger),andalsowiththeVenus/Neptunemidpoint(whichisassociatedwithsexualfantasies).Bothgavestrong resultsinthreeoutoffourgroups.UranusgaveanotherstrongresultinstressaspecttotheMoon'sNode. frequencygreaterthanonewouldexpectfromrandomchancealone.Inastrology,certainangles(whichastrologerscall aspects)aresaidtobe"stressful"andthesearetheaspectsthatwereexamined(theseareanglesof0,90,and180 degrees).Anarbitrarystandardwasset.Toqualifyasa"hit",stressfulaspectsbetweenplanets(aswellasbetween planetsandcertainpoints)hadtooccuratleast50%morethanonewouldexpectbyrandomchance.Forthefulldetailson themodel,pleaseseePartOneofthisstudy.Inthispaper,wewillexamineahostofnewfactorsandseeifthereareany combinationsofthemthatarecommontoseveralofthehoroscopes. Amorepowerfulresearchprogramrecentlybecameavailable,theAstroinvestigator(fromAIRsoftware).Thisprogramcan performdozensoftestsatoncewithonemouseclick.Oneofthethingsfoundwastheincreasedfrequencyofplacements incertainastrologicalsignsandhouses. Beforeweexaminethoseresults,wehavetoaskwhataretheoddsoftheSun,Moon,oroneofthefastermovingplanets beinginanyparticularastrological"sign"?Sincetherearetwelvesignsofequalsize(thirtydegreeseach)theoddswould obviouslybeoneoutoftwelve.Sinceoursampleconsistsofsixtycases,wewouldexpectanyparticularplacementtooccur infivecharts(60x1/12=5).WewillcontinuetousethearbitrarilysetstandardfromPartIof50%aboverandomchance. Thatmeansa"hitrate"ofatleast8casesoutofour60charts.Theresultsareshowninthefollowingtables. NOTE:Tencomputergeneratedcontrolswererunforeachchartinthesample.TheRangeofresultsislistedinthefarright column.ThenumberontheleftofthedashshowstheLeastnumberof"hits"inacontrol,whilethenumbertotherightof thedashshowstheMostnumberofhitsinacontrol.Thecolumnimmediatelytotheleftofthisshowstheaveragenumber ofhitsforthecontrols. Theouterplanets(Uranus,Neptune,andPluto)moveveryslowlyand,asaresult,tendedtoconcentrateinafewsignsover longperiodsoftime.Becauseofthis,thenumberswouldbeskewed.Forthisreason,thesignpositionsofUranus, Neptune,andPlutowereexcluded. TheaboveaverageplacementsforthesignsofGemini,Sagittarius,andCapricornareinteresting.Foronething(according toastrologicaltradition)GeminiandSagittariusare"mental"signs.Theyhavetodowithourabilitytothinkand communicate.Therewasalsoincreasedactivityinhousesthreeandnine,thehousesthatcorrespondtoGeminiand Sagittarius.Ofcourseatthisearlystageoftheresearch,nodefinitiveconclusionscanbedrawn.However,toanastrologer, theincreasedplacementsinbothmentalsignsandhousesisanindicationthatsomethingcouldbeupandthatfurther researchshouldbefocusedonthisarea. TheSun,Moon,andAscendantareallegedbyastrologerstoaffectone's"personality.Allhave"hits"inthesignof Sagittariusatleast50%aboverandomchance.TheSunwasfoundtobeintheoppositesign,Gemini,in11cases,more thantwicetherandomamount.Thecorrespondinghousesalsoshowedanincreasedhitrate.TheSunandMoonhad aboverandomplacementsinthe9thhouse(thehousethatcorrespondstoSagittarius,the9thsign).Inaddition,theMoon hadahigherthanrandomhitrateforthe3rdhouse. TheNodeoftheMoonshowedasimilareffect.ItwasfoundtobeinthesignofGeminiin11cases,anditalsooccurredin the3rdhouse(whichcorrespondstoGemini,the3rdsign)8times. TherewerealsoabovenormalplacementsoftheSunandMooninthesignofCapricorn.Inastrology,Capricornallegedly showstheareaofthelifewherewehaveanaboveaverageneedfor"control."Ofcourse,thisstudyisonlypreliminary. However,thefactthatthesamesignsshowuprepeatedlyforseveralfactorsdoesattractnotice. Patterns:theSearchforCombinationsofAspects InPartOne,anotherfindingwastheapparentincreasedpresenceofoppositionaspects(anangleof180degrees)tothe cusps(beginnings)ofboththe12thand8thhouses(sectors)ofthehoroscopes.The12thhouseisallegedtodealwith "restriction,"includingselfdestructivebehaviorandallformsofpsychologicalproblems.The8thhousesupposedlyrules death.Serialkillerstendtohave"stressful"aspects(theconjunction,square,andopposition)tothecuspsofoneorbothof thesehouses,and,inparticular,theopposition. Let'sdoabriefreview.Givenanypointonthehoroscopewheel,whataretheoddsofanotherpointbeingoppositewithinan orb(range)of+orfivedegrees?Thatwouldbe10degrees(5+5)dividedbythe360degreesofacircle,or1/36.Thiswas noticedfirstwiththeoppositionofSaturntothe12thhousecusp.Outof60chartsofserialkillers,7hadthisaspect(7/60). Thatis4.2timeswhatwouldbepredictedbyrandomchance.Thecontrolsyieldedonlytwo"hits,"whichiswithintherange ofrandomresults.

Arate50%aboverandomchancemaybeevidenceiftheresultsareconsistentandthesamplelargeenough,butweare dealingwithserialkillershere,andtheyare(mercifully)onlyasmall,verysmallportionofthepopulation.Evenifthereisan "astrologicalforce",nooneaspectcanpossiblyaccountforthis.Wewouldhavetohavecombinationsofaspects,sign placements,andhousepositionswheretheoddsofoccurrencearemuchsmaller.Fortunately,thedatausedherewas fromtheAstrodatabankprogram,whichhasaresearchfunctioncalledthe"filter"thatenablesasampletobescreenedfor multiplefactors.Thiswastheprocedure: First,the23,103chartsintheAstrodatabankdatabasewerescreenedforthosewherethedatawasratedBorbetter.These werethenfilteredforserialkillerstoyield83cases.Thisgroupwasexaminedtoremovepoliticalfigures(e.g.Ivanthe Terrible,Naziofficials,membersoftheRedBrigade,etc.)andmilitaryfigures.Thosewereremovedbecauseofthe possibilitythatthemotivationfortheirmurdersweredifferentfromthatofthe"ordinary,everyday"serialkillers.Theserial killersthatwereleftwerelargelythosewhokilledforsexualreasons(e.g.TedBundy)orsimplykilledfornoapparent reason(e.g.DavidBerkowitz)orfor"Satan"(RichardRamirez).ThiswasthelatestversionoftheAstrodatabankprogram (version2.01).PartOneofthisstudywasdonewithanoldereditionthatyieldedonlysixtycases.Forconsistency,PartTwo waslimitedtothesamecases.Thefewextracasesweresetasideforfuturework. Thesecondgroupofserialkillersgavelowresultsinseveralcases.However,forsomeofthese,thecombinedtotalofboth groupswasat50%(orbetter)abovechance.Thesewerecountedashits.Insomecases,thefirstsamplegaveresults belowthe50%criterion,butthesecondgroupgaveresultsfarenoughabovetopushthetotalabovethemark.Thesewere alsocountedashits.
