Position Title:

Master Carpenter

Reports to: Technical Director

Position Summary: The Master Carpenter works with a team of carpenters and painters to efficiently and expertly produce, install, maintain, and strike all the scenery designed for use in CTC productions and events. Principle Responsibilities: - Build high quality scenery using wood, metal, foam, plastics, fabrics and other standard theatrical materials. Experiment with nonstandard materials and techniques as directed. - Interpret and work from technical drawings, designer drawings and/or designer models. - Advise and instruct carpenters with a variety of skill levels about shop policies, safety protocols, procedures and construction methods when necessary. - Work with other carpenters to allocate space and tools as needed so that a variety of projects can be done cooperatively and efficiently within a designated area. - Construct large scenic layout work. - Rig flying, moving, traveling, automated or other scenery. - Work with colleagues in the paints, props, electrics, sound and costume departments to solve mutual problems. - Do minor maintenance on tools, shop, and stage areas, and alert supervisor when larger maintenance may be needed. - Maintain inventory of stock materials, parts, or supplies. - Complete other tasks deemed necessary by supervisor. Requirements and Qualifications: - 5 years practical experience in a similar theatrical shop. - Experience that includes but is not limited to construction using the following materials: wood, steel, aluminum, foam, fiberglass, fabrics, paints and chemical solvents. - Mastery of the following tools and their accessories: radial arm saw, table saw, band saw, cold saw, planer, drill press, miter box, router, sanders, MIG welding equipment, sewing machine, electrical and pneumatic power hand tools. - Mastery of scenic rigging techniques, automation, pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanics and electronics. - Valid drivers license. Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills: The Master Carpenter needs to produce accurate and high quality work, while maintaining a creative, flexible and positive approach. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and have a proven history of proactive skill development. Attention to detail, time management and organizational skills are a must. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and AutoCAD is preferred but not required.
