winner, wasn't it? You might have thought he'd have come up to me and said, 'tough - You luck', instead of stepping on my face." l y tBo 1968 Indianapolis 500 The combat in the arena itself, however, Wl s upto i o q e c w h t . 'k d b was clean. In fact, Unser, pole-winner Joe Leonard and Lloyd Ruby (a turbine thorn between two "roses?") staged one of the most stirring racing dramas in memory of the 500.
CLEAN RACE It was the kind of the race that fans always hope to see. There was a bit of violence, but no blood. The turbines didn't dominate and, as a result, there was competition of a rare form at the speedway. Atso, it was dry after a rainy month of May. And there was speed, the common denominator, of course. Unser's victory was the fastest ever-3 hours, 16 minutes and 13.76 seconds for an average speed of 152.822rnph. Thus, overshadowed was A. J. Foyt's 1967 record average of 151.207mph. But most of all, really, there was irony. No one among the estimated crowd of a quarter-million fans- down slightly from the 1967 total due to an infield quagmire-could expect that history would repeat itself. (Continued on page 10)

And there was even a further weird twist.
