HRDF Claimable* *Subject to HRDF Approval Physico-chemical property of activated carbon produced from dechlorinated waste carbon residue: Modification of surface functional groups and its application Prof. Noriyoshi KAKUTA
SUMMARY: Dechlorination is necessary in order to recycle used polyvinyl chloride (PVC). However, chlorine still remains in the dechlorinated carbon residual substance, and in many cases this residual chlorine obstructs the recycling of carbon residual substance. We have proposed the method of using potassium hydroxide as neutralizing and an active agent to produce activated carbon, and use it as a method of recycling this carbon residual substance. Porous carbons were prepared by potassium activation from dechlorinated PVC. The advantages of this method were 1)neutralization of residual Cl species, 2)pore formation at lower temperatures, 3)high surface area and 4)micropore formation. The surface acidic groups were successfully modified to carboxyl(-COOH) and phenolic hydroxyl(-OH) groups under the mild oxidation condition using HNO3 solution. The control of surface acidic group on porous carbons is effective to apply to adsorbents and others.

Structural analysis of porous materials using adsorption Prof. Shin R MUKAI

Porous materials have been used as functional materials such as adsorbents and catalysts for centuries. The performance of such materials highly depends on their nanostructure. Therefore, information about the nanostructure of such materials is inevitable in order to find methods to enhance their performance. Such information also gives us clues to how to develop new materials which show better performances. Adsorption experiments using probe gas molecules such as nitrogen have been widely conducted in order to collect data for the analysis of the nanostructure of porous materials. Important parameters such as surface area, pore volume and pore size can be derived by analyzing such data. Therefore various methods based on the analysis of adsorption data have been widely used by scientists and engineers of various fields to understand the nanostructure of porous materials. This lecture provides an introduction to basic methods for the analysis of the nanostructure of porous materials using adsorption data. It is based on the famous report by the Commission on Colloid and Surface Chemistry Including Catalysis of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Division Reporting Physisorption Data for Gas/Solid Systems (Pure & Appl. Chem., Vol. 57, No.4, pp. 603-618, 1985).

Introduction to carbon gels - A unique carbon with a tunable hierarchical pore structure Prof. Shin R MUKAI
Porous carbons are widely used as conventional adsorbents and are supporting our daily lives in many different ways. Recently, they have become to be used in more advanced applications, such as the electrode material for electric double layer capacitors. The performance of such carbons highly depends on its nanostructure, therefore the development of methods to precisely control the nanostructure of porous carbons is an everlasting challenge for carbon scientists and engineers. The performance of such carbons also depends on its morphology. However, as it is usually difficult to control the morphology of such materials, they are mostly used as particles. Carbon gels are unique porous carbons, and are typically obtained through the carbonization of resorcinolformaldehyde (RF) gels. This material is practically an aggregate of nanometer-sized carbon particles. Nanopores, mostly in the size range of mesopores, exist between the particles. Smaller pores, micropores being the majority, also exist within the particles. Therefore, this material has a hierarchical pore system in which short micropores are directly connected to mesopores. This pore system can be tuned quite precisely, by simply adjusting synthesis conditions, such as the amount of catalyst used for synthesis, and the drying conditions of the precursor RF gel. This lecture will first introduce carbon gels, how they can be synthesized and the key factors to control their unique hierarchical pore structure. Then new applications of this unique carbon will be presented.
