So, February is running at us with full speed. It is time to turn the calendar once again. I know this will be an exciting and challenging month. Ash Wednesday is February 13, marking the beginning of the Lenten season. Lent is forty days, not counting the Sundays, long. It is a time of reflection and preparation for our sharing in the death and resurrection of Christ. Often, individuals will give up something for Lent. I try to take up something for Lent. I challenge you to do the same. What is something that you can take up for God that will draw you into a closer walk with God? Do you need to take up works of mercy, or justice, perhaps volunteering in a way you dont normally do? Is there a spiritual practice you want to take up and learn that will draw you toward God, meditation or fasting, prayer walking? Are there relationships that need to be added, repaired, or renewed to your life that will draw you close to God? Consider adding something to your life for Lent as a way to prepare yourself to share in the death and resurrection of Easter. As Lent begins, we have some young people of our congregation who will begin a journey of their own. They will begin our Confirmation program. Young persons will be learning faith stories and how those stories weave in their lives and what God has for them. Please pray for them as they continue an important formation part of their lives. Lastly, February is the month of love. Cupid and the florist will be out strong this month. I am hoping for roses, but may settle for a chocolate bar! :-) Seriously, who do you love? Take a few moments to make sure they know...by your words, your actions, a card and maybe a flower. God is so good and loves us more than Cupid could imagine! Respond to Gods love faithfully. Blessings, Pastor Emily
Ash Wednesday, February 13th, we will hold a meeting for all youth entering the Confirmation program. The meeting is for youth and their parents and we will meet at 6:00 pm and then attend the Ash Wednesday Service (7:00 pm). We will be discussing scheduling and expectations of the program during our time together. Please contact me if you have a youth who would like to participate in the program or with any questions. Pastor Emily

Fun Fact:

Biggest Adventure: Going on a 17 day backpacking, rock climbing, & kayaking trip with Baylor Outdoor Adventure in North & South Carolina was one of the most difficult things she had ever done. It was part of a course on outdoor leadership, faith & outdoor pursuits, & Leave No Trace wilderness ethics.

A Few of Virginias Favorite Things: Chocolate! Going dancing Virginia graduates from Baylor Crafting shown here with her mom. Christian Music Bible Verse: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34 Books of the Bible: Jonah & Psalms. I love Jonah because he makes me laugh with his incessant whininess, which sometimes sounds a lot like my own internal dialogue so I have to laugh at myself, too! Gods firmness & loving patience with him (& all of us, for that matter) bring me comfort when I get frustrated. Someone once told me that you can find every human emotion in the Psalms, & I expect that thats true. I think I love Psalms because it reminds me that its alright to be human, because in our weakness Gods glory is most evident. For more info about Virginia... check out the Foyer bulletin board!
Dear Church Family, I finally made the big move! My mom & I arrived on Friday, January 18th after our two-day drive from Texas. She stayed with me for two nights and days & then left the following Sunday from the Manhattan airport. It was hard to say goodbye, but were adjusting well with the help of phone calls, email, & Skype, not to mention the boundless generosity & kindness of everyone here. Special thanks are in order to Joan Grover on the lovely bulletin board she decorated in the Foyer to introduce me to the church. I have been showered with words of welcome ever since I arrived, which has certainly made the transition easier! I am staying at a nice, fully-furnished apartment in Concordia. I have spoken with Pastor Emily & Pastor Tessa of Concordia First United Methodist Church about setting my office hours. We have decided that I will be in Belleville on Mondays & Thursdays, & in Concordia on Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Most days, I will be in the office from 9am-1pm, but you are always welcome to make an appointment with me if you want to be sure Im available. You may leave a phone message for me at the church or send me an email at vsmith.umc@gmail.com. For the months of February & March, I will be alternating Sundays between the two churches with February 10th & 24th putting me in Belleville. I am so looking forward to meeting all of you & joining the church family of Belleville First United Methodist Church! Please dont hesitate to contact me if you have questions, concerns, or ideas! Blessings, Virginia Smith - Youth & Family Ministries Coordinator Page 2

This season in our church calendar is the forty days between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Lent remembers the time of trial and preparation Jesus underwent before commencing his ministry on earth. Within the Christian Church, Lent has evolved into a time of prayerful reflection & discernment. The first day of Lent is Wednesday, February 13, 2013.

The Trustees Kiosk project is closer to reality. The new display board has arrived. If you have noticed the new Blair Theater marquee, the display board for the church will be similar in size to the end displays at the Blair only with red led lights. The display will be able to show many different items during the day and be easily changed for events and services. The Trustees are waiting for an update on the bid to build the brick & mortar portion of the Kiosk and then warm weather to start construction. The Trustees appreciate all who have helped to see this project get under way and are still accepting donations for the finish of the project, which has been funded primarily by your donations, the UMW and the Leadership Team. Any donation to the project is tax deductible and will be reported on your individual giving report at the end of year. Thank you, Jay Kallman, Trustee Chair
