W h a v e a m in d, a power o f t h o u g h t w h ic h r a n g e s f a r b e y o n d e t h e b o d i l y s e n s e s and so d i f f e r e n t i a t e s u s f ro m a l l o t h e r l i v i n g c r e a t u r e s and makes u s t r u l y human. The mind h a s a n i m p u l s e t o know t h e n a t u r e and c a u s e s o f t h i n g s w i t h a l l p o s s i b l e c o m p l e t e n e s s and c e r t a i n t y , t o s e p a r a t e t r u t h f r o m f a l s e h o o d . T h e n we have s e n s e s , p e r c e p t i o n s o f t h e w o r l d a r o u n d u s , w h i c h a r e n o t l i m i t e d t o t h e q u e s t o f n o u r i s h m e n t and p r o t e c t i o n f o r t h e b o d y , b u t d e l i g h t i n f o r m s and c o l o r s and s o u n d s f o r t h e i r own s a k e , as o b j e c t s of a e s t h e t i c c o n te m p la tio n . A g a i n , we h a v e an i d e a o f g o o d n e s s w h ic h i s c o n c e r n e d n o t o n l y w i t h w h a t i s good f o r me a s a n i n d i v i d u a l a n i m a l i n t h e s t r u g g l e f o r s u r v i v a l , o r e v e n f o r my t r i b e o r s p e c i e s i n t h e c o m p e t i t i o n w i t h o t h e r t r i b e s , o r s p e c i e s . We h a v e a n i d e a o f w h a t i s u n i v e r s a l l y good and d e s i r a b l e , and c o n v e r s e l y o f w h at i s u n i v e r s a l l y bad and ought t o be a v o id e d a t a l l c o s t s : t h i s i s th e i d e a o f e t h i c a l or moral goodness, the im p e ra tiv e o f c o n s c ie n c e . P l a t o n i s m t e n d e d t o i d e n t i f y t h e Good a t i t s h i g h e s t l e v e l w i t h t h e sup rem e B e i n g , t h a t i s , w i t h God, c o n c e i v e d i n a somewhat vagu e an d i m p e r s o n a l way, and to f u s e i t w i t h t h e i d e a s o f t r u t h an d b e a u t y a s a s p e c t s o f t h e same t r a n s c e n d e n t r e a l i t y . So t h e o l d humanism d i d n o t e x c l u d e , b u t a c k n o w l e d g e d a n d p a i d i t s homage t o a s u p e r - h u m a n Pow er, making f o r r i g h t e o u s n e s s . C h r i s t i a n i t y took t h i s l in e of thought f u r t h e r , con ceiv in g God i n a more p e r s o n a l way an d t h e q u a l i t i e s o f t r u t h , b e a u t y , g o o d n e s s and s o f o r t h a s h i s a t t r i b u t e s . He was i n f i n i t e T r u t h , i n f i n i t e B e a u t y , i n f i n i t e G o o d n e s s , and s o f o r t h ; and t h e s e q u a l i t i e s w ere r e f l e c t e d o r p a r t i c i p a t e d on a f i n i t e l e v e l i n t h e b e i n g s he h ad c r e a t e d - * j u s t a s t h e P l a t o n i c I d e a s were t h e e t e r n a l p a t t e r n s o f e v e r y t h i n g t h a t e x i s t s i n t h e w o r l d o f s p a c e and t i m e . C h r i s t i a n th o u g h t took o ver a l s o , from i t s r e l i g i o u s s o u r c e s , t h e n o t i o n o f a t r a n s c e n d e n t E v i l as a g a i n s t t h e t r a n s c e n d e n t Good, i n r e b e l l i o n a g a i n s t i t and a t war w i t h i t - - t h e n o t i o n o f a p e r s o n a l D e v i l a t w a r w i t h God on t h e t e r r i t o r y o f t h e c r e a t e d w o r l d and p a r t i c u l a r l y o f t h e human s o u l , d e n y i n g and r e v e r s i n g t h e u l t i m a t e v a l u e s a s s o c i a t e d w i t h God. T h i s i d e a o f a p e r s o n a l D e v i l d o e s n o t seem t o be much i n f a v o r t h e s e d a y s ; and I am n o t t r y i n g now t o p r o v e h i s e x i s t e n c e t o y o u . B u t I would l i k e t o r e m a r k i n p a s s i n g t h a t y o u , who a r e c o n c e r n e d a b o u t c r u e l t y t o a n i m a l s and know s o much more a b o u t i t t h a n t h e a v e r a g e map, h a v e e v e r y o p p o r t u n i t y t o o b s e r v e i n t h e c o u r s e o f y o u r i n v e s t i g a t i o n s , what I may be a l l o w e d t o c a l l t h e f o o t p r i n ts of Satan. M a n 's h i s t o r y , and t h e l i t e r a t u r e and a r t w h ic h a d o r n i t , a r e c h i e f l y c o n c e r n e d w i t h t h e s e l a p s e s , t h e s e m i s t a k e s and c r i m e s . B u t r u n n i n g t h r o u g h i t a l l i s t h e c o n s t a n t , e v e r - r e n e w e d e f f o r t t o d o b e t t e r , t h e t e a r s of r e p e n ta n c e , the s tr u g g le to r i s e a g ain a f t e r each f a l l . I f i t w ere n o t f o r t h i s t h e r e would be no i n t e r e s t i n m a n ' s h i s t o r y ; i t w o u ld be s i m p l y a c a t a l o g u e o f h o r r o r s , f i t o n l y t o be t h r u s t o u t o f s i g h t . Out o f t h e c o n f l i c t b e t w e e n good and e v i l r i s e s t h e hope o f r e d e m p t i o n and o f t h e f i n a l v i c t o r y o f g o o d . T h i s i s w h a t made G o e th e c h o o s e a d i f f e r e n t v e r s i o n o f t h e F a u s t s t o r y , e n d i n g w i t h t h e v i l l a i n ' s r e d e m p t i o n . F a u s t became t h u s a symbol o f e r r i n g b u t r ede em e d h u m a n i t y , and t h e d r a m a grew i n t o a much g r e a t e r and more i n s p i r i n g w ork o f a r t t h a n t h e o l d d a m n a t i o n s t o r y , a s we h a v e i t f o r i n s t a n c e , i n M a r l o w e ' s p l a y . T h i s r e v e r s a l o f u l t i m a t e v a l u e s i s r e p r e s e n t e d m o st mem orab ly b y M i l t o n i n " P a r a d i s e L o s t " , where he makes S a t a n c r y " E v i l , b e t h o u my Good!" I t h i n k we c a n s a y w i t h o u t f e a r o f d i s p u t e t h a t t h e m o s t t y p i c a l of th e s e s i n s of m allee i s c r u e l t y : the d e l i b e r a t e i n f l i c t i o n o f p a i n on a n o t h e r b e i n g f o r o n e ' s own e n d s . This i s c e r t a i n l y the b l a c k e s t s t r e a k i n t h e c o m p o s i t i o n o f man.
